Is a Task Killer Necessary For Android?

Posted on 29 December 2009

I was perusing Androidforums.com today for some software tips, and stumbled on a few threads that maintained there was no reason to use a task killer with Android. These posters maintained that the OS was efficient enough to shut down programs that weren’t necessary and manage memory without a 3rd party intervention.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

48 hours without tech- how I survived

Posted on 28 December 2009

So, the folks here at Gear Diary got to chatting yesterday about going 48 hours without technology.  We are talking no phone, no television, no computers, no e-readers, no Internet, no nada! From what I saw, most of the GD crew gave a “you’d have to pull my tech from my cold dead hands before you get me to relinquish my tech for 48 hours” kind of responses.  We are a group of geeks.  We rely on technology for our everyday lives and our GD lives.  We need it.  So, no one really wanted to try this experiment, until I piped up and said I had just done this exercise this weekend. This weekend from Friday through Sunday, I was without any kind of technology. This was weird.  Even my fiancee commented on my lack of checking my phone for email and text messages. He seems to think I am glued to the phone, which I am, but we all have our vices. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Time Warner Trying to GET TOUGH With NewsCorp and Scripps Howard

Posted on 28 December 2009

Image from Americanidol.com and Edited by Joel McLaughlin Another year has gone by and another set of networks is trying to charge more to the cable providers for their content.  Rupert Murdoch’s NewsCorp, parent company of FX, Fox News Channel and of course Fox owned Fox affiliates, now wants a dollar per subscriber for letting Time Warner to carrier these broadcast affiliates that Time Warner used to get for free.   Without a deal, these networks will go dark as you ring in the New Year.  Amy Zunk informs me that this also affects Bright House Networks customers as well. Time Warner is also getting asked to pay more for Scripps Networks Interactive owned… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Samsung’s New CL80 14MP Camera (Unofficially Announced)

Posted on 28 December 2009

Photo courtesy of Photo Rumors Reports of the new 14MP Samsung CL80 camera leaked out late last week. The camera was supposed to be introduced at CES but unofficially was on display at the Samsung website for a short time. The page is no longer available at the time of this writing but most sites were able to grab the important information before it was pulled. I think Samsung threw it out there as a teaser, which is not uncommon with the electronics market lately. The CL80 looks to be setting some new standards for compact cameras. All that left is maybe throw in a 3G setup and you’ll be tweeting… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Welcome back to the GearGames weekly video game release feature here at Gear Diary! It is interesting that when looking for new releases this week I came across a hefty list … only to discover that almost every one was cancelled and just had a placeholder ’12/31/09′ date. Anyway, of the three games left, one is known delayed into January, one is only coming out this week on one of three platforms … leaving only World Party Games for the Wii as a full retail release.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

As Airport Check-In Gets Worse Than Ever… We Have A Solution

Posted on 28 December 2009

The other day I jokingly wrote in a post that at some point we’re going to be required to fly naked to help ensure that were not carrying anything with us. Even then, however, regarding to need to undergo a cavity search before we can board the plane. Well, I’m not sure where all that far from that based upon the initial responses that were seen from the TSA to this weekend’s failed attempt to down a passenger plane. Larry just called me that he got word from someone trying to board a plane in Philadelphia that they’re not allowed to carry an iPod on board with them. Better still, a leaked memo from the US Department of Homeland Security (on Gizmodo) indicates new security measures that are being put in place. If you aren’t “a head of state watch out! Screeners are now being told to do a “thorough pat-down of all passengers and concentrate on the upper legs and torso”. They are being told to ensure that all liquids, aerosols and jells strictly adhere to policies that have been in place for a number of years. But, “the air carrier may exempt passengers who are heads of state [...]

G1 owners get Eclair in the New Year

Posted on 28 December 2009

Photo courtesy of AndroidSpin Looks like a Happy New Year after all for everyone still running a T-mobile G1. Early adopters rejoice as AnroidSpin claims confirmation on the G1 phone getting a OTA update for Eclair 2.0 or 2.01. Earlier this year, the community stated that the first gen phone would not be getting anything past Donut 1.6 because the G1 could not handle 2.0. The problem with the phone is that the system partition is only about 70MB, which is 99% used up with 1.5 and 1.6. That can now all be put to rest as the devs at Android and T-mobile obviously figured it out. This is also a big win for the modding community, much… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
