Textbooks are crazy expensive. Somehow, information that hasn’t changed in years gets more valuable each semester, despite the number of previous editions! No, I’m not bitter that I had to buy 6 different versions of Plato’s Republic in college, why do you ask? And don’t get me started on the slow acceptance of e-textbooks, or the dismal failure of the Kindle DX in its trial run at a handful of colleges.
Barnes and Noble isn’t quite going so far as to hand out nooks full of textbooks (how cool would that be?!), but they are offering a textbook rental program at select colleges. If you’re too lazy to resell your books at the end of the semester, or you just want a cheaper up-front bill, this is not a bad deal. Also, it leaves you more money to blow on some of the hot new items released in the wake of CES!
