Is the Nexus One a double edged sword for the Apple fan boy?

Posted on 12 January 2010 by

While in Las Vegas, the Gear Diary CES team had the privilege of seeing the Google Nexus One cell phone live and in color. Most of us were quite taken by it.  Dan and Judie so much so that they went on to order one that same night.  They never received their phones though.  The next-day delivery Google promised never happened, and the phones were scheduled to be delivered after we left Vegas.  In the end, the deliveries were refused and the phones sent back.

Dan departed Las Vegas headed for Mexico without reordering his Nexus One. He recently messaged me that he may call upon me to  reorder him another Nexus One while he’s in Mexico, so that it’s waiting for him when he returns. Based on some of the blog posts I’ve read over the Internet today, I think Dan might want to wait.

Reports seem to indicate that Apple could be pushing the release of its next-generation iPhone to April. Normally Apple in the past has released a new iPhone in the summer. What’s the cause of this rush to market? Could it be the Nexus One from Google?

The Nexus One has received mixed reviews, but those who are speaking highly of it are willing to say that it is certainly a challenge to the iPhone. After seeing one for myself at CES 2010, I have to agree. Even with all its limitations, the Nexus One is a beautiful piece of hardware, and with the right software upgrades could really challenge the iPhone.

Is Apple feeling the pressure of the popularity of the Nexus One? And therefore rushing the new iPhone to market ahead of schedule?   Granted all this is rumor, the bulk of which is coming from KT, Apple’s exclusive provider in Korea as reported by the Korea Times newspaper.

Speaking from the Apple fan boy perspective, this is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the techie side of me would be pleased to see a new iPhone sooner rather than later.

The rumored iPhone 4.0 is said to contain a five megapixel camera, OLED screen, removable battery, a front facing camera for video conferencing and possibly contain the ever speedy snapdragon processor. There are sure to be a host of other software additions and other hardware revisions as well, and I’m sure I’d be lined up to get it just like I was for every other iPhone’s release.

On the other hand though, I would be disappointed if the new device was rushed to market and suffered the consequences of being released before its time. We all remember the issues OS 2.0 when it was rushed to release. While I want to see a new iPhone, I’d much rather wait patiently for one that is more stable and ready for release than one that is unstable and rushed.

If the new iPhone 4.0 is going to be released in April, chances are the upcoming end of January Apple event, which is where the highly rumored Apple iSlate might be announced, will be its launching point as well.

How much good news can Apple fan boy taking one day?

At the end of January this one might just find out.

As you note Larry the iPhone 2.0 debacle is still pretty fresh in my memory. The experience was so bad I almost left the iPhone as a platform entirely. I love the new rumored features but rushing if out could be an awful move if it is half-baked.
I suspect Apple quit MacWorld because it did not want to be tied to a specific timeframe of device announcements. This would just be a repeat of that I fear and I for one would love them to take thetime to have it right from the get go.

One other addition that would be killer— direct integration of Dragon Dictation on a much deeper level as part of the OS so it can be used directly and universally.

I’m going to wait on my Nexus One order. I’ll get a new iPhone when it comes, and in the meantime — I plan on checking out the Nokia N900. :-)

Maybe the January announcement is for a new iPhone, and *not* for an iTablet? Just a though; it wouldn’t be the first time ol’ Stevarino has done a bait and switch.

“removable battery” … really? Of everything that is the one seems leat likely, as everything apple is doing seems to be going in the other direction.
