PressDirect Brings 1,400 Newspapers and Magazines to an eBook Reader Near You!

Skiff may have stolen the newspaper thunder at CES, but there’s another way to read a huge number of newspapers on your favorite ebook reader: PressDirect. Essentially, PressDirect is an e-newspaper service that works off subscriptions; you can choose from 31 “credits” (papers) a month for $9.95, or an unlimited number per month for $29.95. They support hundreds of papers from all over the world, and now they’re optimizing their content for the Kindle and Sony Reader!

Not only are they supported on the Kindle and Sony, you can also read their papers on your PC, Mac, iPhone, Blackberry, and coming soon, the Cool-er ebook reader series! Skiff’s reader may look nicer, but this lets you use the hardware you already have, and the e-newspaper subscriptions may even save you money over having the morning paper delivered to your door.

The only downside is that PressDirect does not leverage the Kindle’s Whispernet; you have to dig out your USB cable and manually sync to get the content. On the other hand, this program offers more newspapers for less than Amazon, so that might overcome some laziness! This has a lot of potential to be a disruptive force, since it basically offers everything Skiff claims they have in the works, plus it is cheaper than the competition with more variety. Definitely not a bad way to kick off that new year’s resolution to keep track of what’s going on in the world!

Check out the video above outlining how the papers look on a Kindle, and share below if you could see yourself using this for your daily news fix!

She quickly went from researching what PDA to buy to following tech news closely and keeping up with the latest and greatest stuff. She loves writing about ebooks because they combine her two favorite activities; reading anything and everything, and talking about fun new tech toys. What could be better?

I’m not sure how it is on other platforms, but on the iPhone I view the content over the air without a subscription (but you must still set up an account). The subscription is only required if you wish to download and keep the publication. I love the PressReader app on my iPhone!

from what pressdirect says, you have to have a subscription to download the content and convert it through their desktop software to sync with your reader.

What isn’t clear is whether you could grab any reader (like a nook) and try it, and they just don’t officially support it, or whether it simply won’t work.
