Handset launch sales figures show Nexus 1 trailing behind

Flurry has generated some good numbers on first week sales results for some of latest handset hot sellers. The Nexus One first week sales numbers are nothing to write home about. You can see the data from above that the 3rd Gen iPhone sold a mind-blowing 1.6M handsets in the first three days. While these are only estimates, Flurry agrees that the Nexus One is a whole different animal when it comes to phones. I also believe most people bought the phone unsubsidized and at full price. I have had hands on the device and can honestly say the phone is quite impressive whether you like Android or not. The Droid and MT3G also outsold the Nexus by staggering numbers.

The Nexus has been seeing some bad press lately with the current 3G problems but with any new handset this is nothing new. T-Mobile did not market this device at all, and you didn’t see Millions of dollars of commercial airtime either. The biggest media coverage was due to the hype and buzz around the Android and HTC community. So you decide, numbers are numbers or is 20,000 sold for the first week not that bad? Should the release in other countries count too? All other handsets were well subsidized and advertised by the carriers prior to the launch. And if you notice, the iPhone had 2 other generations of advertising prior. But in the end no matter how you put it, 1.6M handsets in 3 days is quite impressive.

Competition is great for the consumer, usually its a better product and lower prices. Both the Nexus and the iPhone have some new rumors floating around about their successor’s. The Nexus may get a keyboard, and the iPhone may get some impressive hardware refreshed and a removable battery.  I can’t wait to get my hands on either of them.
