Netflix Bringing Streaming Video To The Wii This Spring!

When the Wii came out there was much consternation over the fact that it wouldn’t play DVD video, compared with the HD options on the XBOX360 and PS3. Since then, both of those consoles have gotten Netflix streaming capabilities, allowing gamers to enjoy ‘Watch it Now’ movies through their consoles. Now – after months of rumors – Nintendo and Netflix are announcing that the Wii will gain video streaming capabilities (presumably through a ‘Netflix Channel’) this spring.

Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, said the Wii had always been primarily about bringing video games to the mass market, including people who normally would not play a violent shoot-’em-up or pick up a traditional video game controller.

But, Mr. Fils-Aime said, “from Day 1, we always had other capabilities within the console.” The deal with Netflix, he said, “is a continuation of an effort to bring more and more entertainment to consumers who interact with the Wii.”

So – will you watch movies using your Wii? I can definitely see our kids making use of this – they have the Wii on a TV in their area of our basement, and this will be a great way to watch what they want.

I have loved technology for as long as I can remember - and have been a computer gamer since the PDP-10! Mobile Technology has played a major role in my life - I have used an electronic companion since the HP95LX more than 20 years ago, and have been a 'Laptop First' person since my Compaq LTE Lite 3/20 and Powerbook 170 back in 1991! As an avid gamer and gadget-junkie I was constantly asked for my opinions on new technology, which led to writing small blurbs ... and eventually becoming a reviewer many years ago. My family is my biggest priority in life, and they alternate between loving and tolerating my gaming and gadget hobbies ... but ultimately benefits from the addition of technology to our lives!

I don’t know. With 3 young kids…we are running around quite a bit. So we don’t watch too many movies. Redbox has filled our movie needs quite nicely. Cheap and easy. I guess it would depend on how much it costs. And how much time we get to watch the movie. Sometimes it might take a day or two to finish a whole movie.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m very excited to see the Wii finally getting some more ‘virtual’ love,…I’ve kinda always been jealous of the xbox and ps3 online connected community.

@thehotrod – the busy schedule actually is one reason we got Netflix. You pay a monthly fee based on how many movies you have ‘out’ at a time, and you keep them as long as you want. We just returned two movies that were sitting in our house for a few weeks without being watched … which means we were paying $15 a month for not watching anything on DVD!

But as a Netflix member you automatically get access to ‘watch instantly’ a whole lot of movies (typically not first run stuff), and you can start it and restart it as much as you want – there is no limit in that way (well, the budget plan has some limits).

All these console plans do it allow you to stream via a gaming console, rather than what we do – hook my Macbook Pro up via HDMI.
