isPermaLink="false">http://www.geardiary.com/?p=69364#comment-67492

Followup on my complaint about the kensington nightstand charger with Rise & Shine app:
I think the reason the device/app didn't work the first time was because i had auto lock turned on on my phone, which effectively put the device to sleep at some point overnight.
Why the company's tech support referred to it "not providing full functionality" is now a mystery to me--as well as to Kensington Corporate (Amy very nicely called me from customer service to find out more about what wasn't working on my device). So far as they know everything works* with the new 3GS and latest firmware.
Taking the confusing tech support response out of the mix, i decided to try the nightstand again last night. I turned auto lock off first, then set the alarm using the iPhone's native clock app, then activated Rise & Shine. The screen stayed on all night and the alarm woke me at the proper time in the morning.
(*--the only things that function less than 100% are the weather service, which in some cities gets an imprecise location for local weather, and the swipe-to-dim function: you pretty much get bright, and off. I'm wondering if the phone's auto-brightness might be conflicting with that part of the Kensington app.)
Bottom line, I'm pleased with my purchase and happy to go ahead and give the ones I'd bought as gifts. And i'm impressed by Kensington's customer service, even if their tech support glitched it up a little in the beginning. I hope they continue to update the app, to make a clever and useful iPhone accessory even better.

Followup on my complaint about the kensington nightstand charger with Rise & Shine app:

I think the reason the device/app didn’t work the first time was because i had auto lock turned on on my phone, which effectively put the device to sleep at some point overnight.

Why the company’s tech support referred to it “not providing full functionality” is now a mystery to me–as well as to Kensington Corporate (Amy very nicely called me from customer service to find out more about what wasn’t working on my device). I haven't personally used the nightstand charging dock, so I haven't had a chance to experience whether it works properly or not. Hopefully a Kensington rep will reply here.

Rtdunham, that’s a disturbing story, indeed. If they failed to mention that, you might appropriately feel used (like i do as a customer). I bought one at macworld last week--loved the concept--but it simply didn't work: it'd go to sleep before morning. So instead of having a clock for the night, i had an iPhone on the bedstand that looked like it was turned off. As was I, by this reply when I asked Kensington tech support what the problem might be:
"We request you to try using the Charging Dock with a different iPhone which has lower version of Firmware (less than 3.1) and check if that works. Also , we would like to inform you that the Charging Dock works on iPhone that came with the earlier versions of firmware. Later, Apple had upgraded the Firmware of the iPhone and so is the reason the Charging Dock is not providing the full functionality."
I'd bought four of them as gifts. So now i have to go thru the nuisance of trying to prevail with return procedures. If they didn't tell you about this problem, i have to wonder about the quality of the other gadgets they showed you, too.

Did they bother telling you at CES that the charging nightstand alarm clock feature doesn’t work on current iPhones?
