Speck Fitted Case for iPhone Explodes with Choices

Posted on 19 January 2010

While at CES 2010 we spent a good deal of time hanging out in one of our favorite accessory manufacturers’ booth, Speck.  Okay truth be told they had free beer, but we would have been there regardless, that’s how much we like the stuff Speck has to offer. One of their first cases for the iPhone, the Fitted Case, started out with only two designs but has since been blown out with all new styles. We had the chance to preview some of the new designs and Speck was kind enough to send us home with some samples to review as well.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Apple as a Bookstore: Savior of Reading or Doomsday Scenario?

Posted on 19 January 2010

Macrumors is reporting that there are rumors of Apple negotiating with HarperCollins to sell ebooks on the Apple tablet/iSlate. There have been similar rumors around magazines, and idea of Apple as a bookstore comes up in speculation often, but this is the first solid, believable rumor in some time. What does this mean for reading ebooks on your iPhone/iPod Touch/future Apple tablet? How will this impact existing reader programs in the Apple ecosystem, and will the repercussions spread to the larger ebook world? I have a few thoughts on what could happen, and whether these are pros or cons to the current and future ebook world.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

For all you couch potatoes, sitting is bad for you!

Posted on 19 January 2010

I saw this post over at The Register and couldn’t help but saying, “Well duh!” Swedish scientists have warned that too much sitting on your backside can provoke cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. That’s pretty obvious, you might think, but the researchers from the Karolinska Institute and the Swedish School of Sport and Health warn that the excessively sedentary are running serious risks, irrespective of how much exercise they do when they’re not plonked behind a desk, or lying on the sofa. Those who are “already insufficiently physically active” will, unsurprisingly, “increase their risk even further by prolonged sitting time.” So, time to keep to those New Year’s resolutions and Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Send Happy Birthday to a real Space Hero

Posted on 19 January 2010

I have been fascinated with space travel for as long as I can remember.  I have been to see the local planetary shows time and time again.  I have watched more specials, movies and Internet videos than I want to mention. A name that has been brought up time and time again is Buzz Aldrin.  Remember him? He is the one who piloted the lunar module on Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing in history. On July 20, 1969, he was the second person to set foot on the Moon, following mission commander Neil Armstrong. He’s one of our leading space exploration advocates and continues to chart a course for future space travel from Planet Earth to… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Did WinMo 7 book a flight to Barcelona?

Posted on 18 January 2010

Courtesy of fonearena With CES out of the way and an army of new mobile technology invading your wallet, Microsoft might be trying to pull some of the spotlight back in their direction. We posted last week about the overwhelming amount of companies claiming that WinMo will be delayed until next year. Apparently Microsoft didn’t appreciate that kind of press, so they’ve fired up the old rumor mill to give the WinMo fans a glimmer of hope. This week LG and HTC both leaked out the news of their upcoming devices running 7 mobile, and both have a release date before the first of next year. According to WMExperts, the new OS is to be named “Seven.” No mobile, or Windows Mobile anywhere in the title. They are said to be working on two editions of the new OS, one will be a business edition and one a media edition which could be split releases on different dates. A lot of talk to the tune of a Zune Phone Experience is being tossed around, too. The integration into the Xbox, Zune like Audio, apps, Silverlight and music experience would bring MS mobile up to speed with a full media experience [...]

Resolutions for the Gaming New Year

Posted on 18 January 2010

Are you feeling hung over from some bad gaming purchases in 2009? Let me share some thoughts on how to apply principles and resolutions to fill your 2010 full of smart gaming choices! Every New Years, many people make resolutions of things they will do that year to make themselves better people. I do this each year, typically with a single thing I want to work on in my personal life (and typically either better health or communications!). With the very busy Fall release season coming to a close, it is a good time to reflect on the decisions made and assess how well we stuck to our principles during the year. Looking at my own purchases this year I realized that there were changes I wanted to make in my gaming life.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: Bandshell sound amplifying case for iPhone

Posted on 18 January 2010

While it’s true CES is made up of a lot of exciting electronic type gadgets including TVs, stereos, gaming consoles, and other large ticket items sometimes cool things are also found in small packages. Walking the show floor one day I came across the Bandshell booth. The Bandshell case is simple in design yet wonderful in function. Not only does the case amplifiy the sound emitted by your iPhone’s speaker it also doubles as a video stand placing your phone and the proper angle for watching content. I left the show with a few samples of the Bandshell for review courtesy of the Bandshell’s designer.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
