If you follow any of the Gear Diary editors on Twitter, you know that during CES 2010 we were constantly tweeting our location. One day during the show, after tweeting that I was near the South Hall, I received an @ reply from one of the vendors on display there. Phone Halo asked that I swing by their booth for a demo. So I did. What is Phone Halo? Phone Halo is a new product, that’s available for pre-order, which helps you safeguard some of your most valuable possessions, like your keys, your cell phone and your wallet. If you’re constantly losing things, then this might be the device you need to… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Coming seemingly out of nowhere to become one of the absolute best games of 2008 on any platform, the turn-based strategy game King’s Bounty: The Legend was an amazing experience that provides dozens of hours of challenging and varied gameplay. Late last year it gained a stand-alone expansion, Armored Princess – and that has proven to be every bit as good! Now they are available on Steam for an incredible low price – the original game is $4.99, the expansion is $9.99, or you can get the ‘Gold Edition’ which includes both for $11.25! Combined there is easily 200 hours of gaming time plus loads of replayability on offer. If you have a reasonably powerful PC and… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Image courtesy of JapanTrendShop While this one is rather … odd … I have to admit that as the father of two middle school aged boys I actually stopped and read this. So I figured I would share this for either amusement or informational purposes. Here are the basics – men urinating while standing is messy and noisy. Sitting is an option that has other potential issues. So in comes the ‘Pee Without Noise Stool’ that has boys and men kneel before the throne, resulting in less noise and less mess. Problem solved! Image courtesy of Joystiq When the Wii came out there was much consternation over the fact that it wouldn’t play DVD video, compared with the HD options on the XBOX360 and PS3. Since then, both of those consoles have gotten Netflix streaming capabilities, allowing gamers to enjoy ‘Watch it Now’ movies through their consoles. Now – after months of rumors – Nintendo and Netflix are announcing that the Wii will gain video streaming capabilities (presumably through a ‘Netflix Channel’) this spring. Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, said the Wii had always been primarily about bringing video games to the mass market, including people who normally would not play a violent shoot-’em-up or pick up a Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Yesterday, Carly posted a response to Boy Genius Report’s thoughts on some deficiencies in the Android experience. In that post, she described how to select text to copy and paste on her Motorola Droid (or any Android device with a keyboard). But how do you do this on a device without a hardware keyboard, such as the Nexus One?… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Hello! My name is Porter. Sometimes they call me Stinkus, Sir Stink, and Stinky Dink. I tolerate it because USUALLY I get whatever I want. Walks, playing catch, treats, and sleeping on the bed are just cute dog face away. But I’ve hijacked Carly’s post today because she’s JUST. NOT. GETTING. IT! Apparently “Rrrrrgggg….Awooooooo….EEeeeeee….RRRRRRGGG” followed by a nice long stretch was unclear, as was when I put my head directly on her keyboard. So while she’s preparing dinner I’m taking this opportunity to make myself heard.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

photo courtesy of cultofmac.comThe idea is pretty clever: You take a thin clear plastic layer, much like a screen saver, and give it a few “bumps” to force your finger into the correct locations, and you will make typing on the iPhone a better experience. 4iThumbs has done just that. They released their Tactile Keyboard for iPhone to help you in typing better and faster on the iPhone without obscuring your vision of what’s on the screen. Does it work? Read on…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Skiff may have stolen the newspaper thunder at CES, but there’s another way to read a huge number of newspapers on your favorite ebook reader: PressDirect. Essentially, PressDirect is an e-newspaper service that works off subscriptions; you can choose from 31 “credits” (papers) a month for $9.95, or an unlimited number per month for $29.95. They support hundreds of papers from all over the world, and now they’re optimizing their content for the Kindle and Sony Reader!… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

It’s part of my daily ritual. I wake up, grab my coffee and jump on the computer. In addition to reading e-mail, checking my RSS feeds, YouTube videos and other favorite websites I always remember (or should I say usually remember) to take a photo on the website Daily Booth.com. I told you about Daily Booth in this post. The site allows you to snap a picture of yourself every day, or more often if you prefer. As I near 300 daily images, I enjoy looking back on how my look has changed over the year. It’s been much anticipated and finally arrived the iPhone app… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Earlier today, I told you about how that pattern code on your new Droid wasn’t as secure as it seemed. If your phone was stolen, there was a good chance the thief could bypass the pattern and break into your phone. Not if you take advantage of Wavesecure’s offer, however; they’re giving away a free lifetime subscription for their security software through the end of January! After that the prices will presumably be in line with their offerings for Symbian and Windows Mobile, which run 5 euros for 3 months or 15 euros for the year.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Photo courtesy of Flickr In the past if you wanted to use all the great space on your Google account, you had to install other third-party apps or scripts to make use of it all. Google now will be adding a native storage feature to Google docs over the next few weeks. This new storage should directly challenge already existing services such as Dropbox and Box.net, which are currently available in both free and paid subscriptions. Free users get 1GB of space to store whatever type of files they want. The only limitations I see is that a single file size must be less than 250MB. The paid subscription is pretty cheap, 1GB only costs $.25… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

There’s absolutely no doubt that there are plenty of reviews, opinions and updates inundating the ‘net regarding Google’s latest flagship Android device, the Nexus One. Don’t think the deluge of updates will be stopping anytime soon. Android’s a hot topic for anyone looking for the newest smartphone. Opinions on the device itself — and even the Android platform — are always going to differ. Some people may not like a purely touchscreen interface (so maybe a rumored “Enterprise” Nexus One with a hardware keyboard will appeal to that group), some people may even personally prefer a specific software solution that they’ve grown accustomed to using (iPhone OS, Windows Mobile, etc). Yes, some people will certainly make their final decision based on their wireless carrier and the coverage they receive. With all of the press and differing opinions out there a lot of people are, rightly so, very interested in the Nexus One. Is it the device for you? Well, if you are planning to pick up a Nexus One, or any Android device, and expect to use it for both business and personal use, you may want to to think twice. Why? If your company uses Microsoft Exchange for corporate [...]

Photo courtesy of Wareseeker Even though the Zune HD packs one of the most powerful mobile platforms out today, the MP3 player gets no love compared to Apples’s industry Juggernaut the iPod. I have a 32GB Zune HD and absolutely love it. The biggest issue I have is the small marketplace and app support. The Zune HD is actually a really great player, but needs to unleash the power of the Tegra, and so far has failed to do so. With Tegra powering the device, HD content and games have no problems with playback or quality. The ultra slim case and OLED screen make it stand out from the crowded MP3 player market, but… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
