Four Years Later Will I Finally Get My Ideal UMPC?

Posted on 26 January 2010

Oh, who am I kidding. I’m downright giddy about Apple’s announcement tomorrow. Yes, it’s possible that we’ll just see a new iPhone operating system or an upgrade to the Apple TV but with all of the buzz this time around that would be rather surprising. This time around it really truly looks as if we’ll be seeing a tablet and that’s why every single website and news media outlet can’t get enough of the rumors and opinion pieces. I really didn’t want to add some more of it just markets closer and more possibilities leak out I just can’t help myself. Yes, I know that ultimately we really don’t know what tomorrow will bring but my gut tells me that it’s bigger than what many of us have thus far heard. I can’t imagine Apple simply releasing a large-size iPhone or iPod touch. No, if there is a new device announced tomorrow it will be an entirely new category that does things we don’t expect in ways we can’t imagine. In of itself that’s pretty exciting. There is, however, an additional reason that I am particularly excited that we might finally see a tablet from Steve Jobs and company. It [...]

Posted on 26 January 2010

Want to keep your iPhone’s form factor as close to the way it was when you first pulled it out of the box but still protect it? There are skins that will do it, but these are often hard to install. The Switch Easy Nude case measures at only .08mm of thickness.  It comes in 6 colors and includes two crystal clear screen protectors. At only $19.99 this case offers the absolute closest thing to a naked phone that I’ve seen. Check out my video review below then head to the Switch Easy web site and grab one. Google Voice available for iPhone and Palm

Posted on 26 January 2010

Well, the war over Google Voice on an iPhone is over…and Apple has won! Starting today, Google Voice will be available for both the iPhone and the Palm Pre/Pixi via a mobile Google Voice web site. According to TechCrunch: The new Google Voice mobile site shows your inbox with transcribed calls, which you can play from the browser. You can also send SMS messages or dial from the browser. The application ends up making a local call through your cell phone to Google Voice, which then routes your call through its own lines. When someone gets the call, they see your Google Voice number instead of your AT&T number. And when you Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Music format wars drawing near, MP3′s change their DNA

Posted on 26 January 2010

Image courtesy of CNET MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3) has been the music standard for online music and downloads for almost 20 years. In the late 90′s MP3′s took off with the Napster and Winamp revolution. Finally after all this time the people behind MP3′s came out with a new standard called MusicDNA. This new format is built on the original MP3 format, but now comes with the ability to hold an amazing amount of metadata information. Some of the new features allow you to add Lyrics, Artwork and Blog info. This new searchable format can hold up to 32GB of additional data within a single file. As storage grows rapidly in phones, MP3, and Portable Media Players, you will soon be… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Geek trauma- no power or Internet

Posted on 26 January 2010

Yesterday, I experienced a traumatic event.  As part of the healing process, I want to share it with you all. Yesterday morning at 0′dark-thirty a.m., a nasty rainstorm hit my area of Florida.  We have been having nasty rain on and off for several days.  This is usually no big deal. I woke several hours later and started my usual day.  About 8:20ish EST, IT happened. I was without power or Internet access.  All I had was my G1 phone and three very confused cats.  It was WEIRD.  I was in geek trauma.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Is “Customer Service” In the Nook’s Dictionary?

Posted on 26 January 2010

Barnes and Noble has taken their lumps a few times over the nook, but apparently it is more than just software that has been buggy. Blogger Jesse Vincent recounted a pretty horrific customer service experience when he ordered his nook. In a nutshell, he ordered it, Barnes and Noble repeatedly missed the ship dates, and then accidentally canceled his order, causing him to lose out on the $100 credit he was due for all the missed ship dates.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

The Nexus One may soon be less exclusive, Pick one up on your next grocery run

Posted on 26 January 2010

If you’ve been holding out on buying a Nexus One, it may have paid off. Of course there are no guarantees on price but you will soon be able to buy a Nexus One from Walmart and Letstalk Wireless. Even more interesting is that the phone shows the support of Sprint and Verizon EvDO bands along with AT&T’s GSM. The site is live now and can been seen through the link at the bottom. The rumored price is said to be only $99 with new contract. I can’t understand how Wal-Mart got the rights to sell the phone, as it is now exclusive only to the Google site since the announcement. Hopefully the sale goes live soon and will give… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

More Apple Publisher Rumors; One Author You Won’t See Through Apple

Posted on 25 January 2010

We’re only a few days away from Apple’s big event, and the rumors about WHAT is being released are swirling. According to Macrumors, some of the book publishers have started to share what little they do know… Apparently they know very little about the physical tablet itself, except that it weighs roughly the same as a DX with smaller dimensions. Not all of the deals are complete, and Apple may not have everything worked out until mid-2010, but we’ll get the basic overview on Wednesday. And here’s the serious, damning, worst case scenario that I called last week:… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

T-Mobile & doubleTwist Join Forces for Android Music Management

Posted on 25 January 2010

We’ve covered doubleTwist before as a way to sync all your media content across multiple smartphones, including BlackBerry, Palm’s webOS devices and Android.  Now it looks like T-Mobile and doubleTwist have officially partnered to simplify music management for Android users and may bundle the application with select handsets, including the Fender MyTouch 3G. While iTunes is tied to iPhones and iPods, doubleTwist brings a familiar iTunesesque interface over to wide variey of devices.   Music, playlists, photos, video syncing…it’s all supported.   One of the only “downsides” with T-Mobile’s doubleTwist is that it lacks integration to Amazon’s MP3 store.  Maybe that’s due to Amazon’s Mp3 Store app being available in the Android market.  Maybe it’s due to some licensing… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
