Poynt Mobile App Now Features Location Based AccuWeather Data

Posted on 08 February 2010 by

It’s no secret that I am a big fan of the Poynt application for BlackBerry.  It’s one of the first things I load on a new ‘Berry.  It’s free, and simply put it is the best location based search application for BlackBerry.  Whether you’re looking for movie tickets, restaurants, businesses, or gas prices, Poynt is what you want to use for quick results.   Over 1 million active users can’t be wrong.  One thing I appreciate is the fact that the development team over at Multiplied Media is constantly adding new features to Poynt.

Case in point (pun intended): AccuWeather has now partnered with Multiplied Media to bring their weather data and forecasts directly to the application.  Even better is you won’t have to search around the app to get to it.  It’s right there on the home screen! Your local weather conditions will show up in Poynt even as you scroll through the interface to pull up information relevant to your specific location.  That Accuweather.com data powers the display on the Poynt home screen to show your local temperature and sky conditions.  Then, to make it even more slick, those sky conditions are reflected by the dynamic background that changes according to the type of weather the user is experiencing.   Very cool!

AccuWeather.com Partners with Multiplied Media to Integrate Weather with their Poynt Mobile Application

AccuWeather.com today announced their partnership with Multiplied Media to provide weather information in the popular mobile application Poynt which helps users find people, gas prices, businesses, movie theatres, retailers and restaurants near them. AccuWeather.com provides current conditions on the Poynt home screen with a click through for a detailed three-day forecast. “We’re pleased to work with Multiplied Media in providing weather for their Poynt application,” Jim Candor, Senior Vice President of New Media for AccuWeather.com said. “Weather is one of the most highly popular forms of mobile content and is highly relevant to location-based uses. It’s a natural fit for Poynt because users looking for key locations will also want to keep on top of the weather so they know how far they are willing to walk or drive and whether they will face any adverse weather like snow, rain, or extreme heat or cold.”

“Weather has been one of the most requested features from our users. It was important for us to find a partner with broad reach as we expand globally, but who could also offer a high degree of accuracy as that’s important to us and our user-base,” said Andrew Osis, CEO, Multiplied Media. “When we were evaluating possible partners, AccuWeather.com stood out due to the trust they’d earned among the meteorological industry as well as the general public. Their global coverage means we only require a single partner to offer this service regardless of where we expand.”

AccuWeather.com data powers a display on the Poynt home screen which shows the current temperature and sky conditions. Sky conditions are further reflected by a dynamic background that changes according to the type of weather the user is experiencing. Users can click through on the home screen display to day and night forecasts with more details like wind, precipitation, and sunrise/sunset times.

The Poynt application is available for BlackBerry® smartphones via over-the-air download at m.poynt.com using BlackBerry Browser or from BlackBerry App World
