GearGames Weekly: February 14 – 20

Posted on 15 February 2010 by

Welcome back to the GearGames weekly video game release feature here at Gear Diary! This is another interesting week, as we have the reboot of a video game based on two movies based that had in turn spawned a series of movies. And yet based on early looks it looks like it might all work. The other big release of the week is one of the few times a PSP game is one of the top releases, with the latest entry in the SOCOM franchise SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3, which is actually pretty solid based on my time with a pre-release copy of the game.

Aside from that, there are two interesting DS releases. First, the one I features – Korg DS-10 Plus, which is a synthesizer system for the DS that adds to the excellent original in many ways. The other is a port of the popular PC massively multiplayer game Ragnarok . There are a few other games coming out this week, so check out the list!

Some notes from last week:

  • BioShock 2
  • - A solid game, but since there was no real avenue left for a sequel this feels a bit contrived and ‘been there done that’ all the time.

  • Dante’s Inferno
  • - Average hack & slash game, decent fun but little else.

  • Shiren the Wanderer
  • - Nicely caputes the compelling gameplay and terrific difficulty that made the DS game one of the best Rogue-likes in ages.

  • Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity
  • - Put one of the best games of 2008 with the two expansion packs for an amazing game at an amazing price. If you like strategy games … this is an easy recommendation.

What games am I playing now? Here is a sampling:

  • Mac: Dragon Age: Origins – despite enjoying the game I have become known as ‘needlessly negative’ on the official forums because I am pushing for some news of a patch or the release of the DLC / expansion.
  • PC: Bioshock 2 – not bad, but really not doing anything much to impress me.
  • DS: Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes – I love puzzle-RPG games like this, and it is a wonderful, wonderful game.
  • PSP: SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3 – I’m still having fun playing custom missions.

So what are you playing? Chime in below!

Enjoy gaming!

I have loved technology for as long as I can remember - and have been a computer gamer since the PDP-10! Mobile Technology has played a major role in my life - I have used an electronic companion since the HP95LX more than 20 years ago, and have been a 'Laptop First' person since my Compaq LTE Lite 3/20 and Powerbook 170 back in 1991! As an avid gamer and gadget-junkie I was constantly asked for my opinions on new technology, which led to writing small blurbs ... and eventually becoming a reviewer many years ago. My family is my biggest priority in life, and they alternate between loving and tolerating my gaming and gadget hobbies ... but ultimately benefits from the addition of technology to our lives!
