Give Your iPad Some Cajones with iBallz

Posted on 10 February 2010

You know, the longer the waiting for the iPad goes on, the more stuff seems to come out for it.  I’m wondering what will happen if the iPad isn’t a huge hit.  Dozens of case, bag, and applications companies go down the tubes as their stock sits around unsold? No, I don’t think it’s going to happen.  But I digress. Into the already-crowded field of “How do I protect my precious iPad” comes a new product:  iBallz.  Instead of being a case or a cover or some such, iBallz–as its name implies–is a set of four foam-rubber balls that fit over the edges of your iPad, and are held together with elastic.  The iBallz don’t get… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Whac-a-Mole Comes to Android

Posted on 10 February 2010

I reviewed Whac-a-Mole for the iPhone a few months ago, and really enjoyed it. Now Kiloo is bringing the game to Android phones too! Best of all, they are offering it for FREE! When I reviewed Whac-a-Mole, I said: I could easily see handing this game to a kid and not seeing them for hours as they get lost playing. But this game is for more than just kids…my friends enjoyed playing this so much I had to steal my phone back to complete the review! Overall, if you’re looking for an entertaining game for your iPhone or iPod Touch, you can’t really go wrong with Whac a Mole! Android is still working to catch up with the iPhone’s prodigious game catalog, so it is always… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Travel Tips On A Snowy Day

Posted on 10 February 2010

I got back from San Francisco just in time to be snowed in here in New Jersey. It was the quickest trip to the West Coast that I have ever taken but it was actually the easiest. I don’t tend to do a tremendous amount of traveling. In an average year I’ll be on a plane four or six times maximum. I am, however, currently in the midst of an unusual period that has me flying quite a bit more than usual. In the last 3 1/2 weeks I have been on six different flights and I have another trip coming up in about two weeks. It has given me an opportunity to “refine” my approach to air travel while, at the same time, giving me a greater appreciation for some of the technologies and services that can make travel just a bit easier. And with air travel being as obnoxious as it is, anything that makes traveling a bit easier is a welcome addition. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

TeleNav- Whose Brand Is It Anyway?

Posted on 10 February 2010

Monday was a rather full day with the folks from TeleNav. They brought twenty of us in from all over the country to share some of their strategic plans and get our thoughts and suggestions regarding their current and upcoming products. We started at 7:30am and didn’t finish until after 10pm. Yes, there IS that much to  talk about with regard to GPS and location-based services. During the day we learned a good deal about the company and, I must say, I’m impressed by what they do and where there are going. One of the more interesting things that emerged from the day was the realization that I likely bump into TeleNav’s technologies far more often than I realize. They are there, but I don’t know it. And it left a nagging question of “Whose brand is it anyway?” Let me explain.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Blue Plate Special: Siri Assistant For iPhone

Posted on 10 February 2010

We are all feeling the financial pinch!    Blue Plate Special is a weekly review of bargain apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Nothing over $.99. The iPhone has many applications to find restaurants, taxi cabs, movies or weather.  Each of these apps have a unique UI to find these places or events.  Siri has brought yet another interesting method of search and discovery. No more endless clicking on links and pages to get things done on the Internet. Delegate the work to Siri and relax while Siri takes care of it for you. Need a table for 2 at your favorite restaurant next Thursday? Just ask Siri. Need a taxi right now? Just ask Siri and with a single request the cab’s on its way. Type or speak… it’s up to you. Siri acts on your behalf utilizing the best services on the web. Simply put: it’s the new way to get things done. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Google Offers Up Ultra-Fast Internet via Google Fiber

Posted on 10 February 2010

This morning Google has announced their plan to build and test ultra high speed broadband networks in a group of test communities across the United States. All the better to collect your data and get those advertisements served, posthaste! We’ll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people. They are looking for people from communities to respond nominating their hometowns, and they are particularly interested in hearing from community leaders of those places. Bear in mind that this is only an experiment at this point, Google is in a hurry – they want… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Dog-e-Minder for the Absent Minded Pet Owner

Posted on 10 February 2010

I have mixed feelings about the Dog-e-Minder pet assistant. On the one hand, it looks like this device could be an invaluable tool for remembering pet medications – especially when they have to be administered more than once a day, or it could serve as a way to remember the last time you took your puppy outside during potty training. On the other hand, it seems like the type of person who needs help remembering when the last time they fed or walked their dog might be better off with a cat.  Was that too judgmental? Anyway … The simple, three-button design is easy for any family member to use. Each button has a Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Think eBooks Violate Your Privacy? Try Mass Transit!

Posted on 10 February 2010

(image courtesy Bellhouse press) Sure, Amazon might be tracking what you download to your Kindle, but at least they aren’t tweeting what you read on the train! Slice, a Brooklyn magazine, are riding the subway and stalking you through Penn Station so they can see what you are reading! Slice thinks ebook readers are making us too anti-social, and they’re tweeting what they see people read on the train to prove we all lose something when we can’t judge our neighbor’s choice of books. That’s kind of weird all by itself, but they’re also tweeting descriptions of the readers, making their twitter feed sound like an unholy combination of library catalog and craigs list missed connections. Don’t believe me? Check these out: # Eclipse (library edition), Stephenie Meyer (F, 20s, dark curly hair, holding book xing 55th at Broadway) http://bit.ly/bv1IJv #coverspy about 3 hours ago from twitterfeed Continue reading on Gear Diary …
