GearGames Weekly: February 28 – March 6

Posted on 01 March 2010 by

Welcome back to the GearGames weekly video game release feature here at Gear Diary! The dust is still settling from the Winter Olympics, but it is time to get ready for spring with this week’s annual barrage of baseball games! We get both MLB 10: The Show and Major League Baseball 2K10, the former released for all Sony platforms and the latter coming to everything but your toaster! This games are generally solid and fun and really intended for serious fans who stay on the treadmill, paying $60 a year for minor gameplay and graphical tweaks and roster updates. I tend to grab one of these games every few years which provides more granular and noticeable changes.

But the big game for me this week is the sequel to the huge 2007 PC strategy game Supreme Commander 2, which was overshadowed to an extent by Company of Heroes … but that is bound to happen when two of the best RTS games of all time land in the same year! There is also the highly anticipated multi-platform online shooter Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and a surprisingly strong week for the PSP. There are a few other games coming out this week, so check out the list!

Some notes from last week:

  • Napoleon: Total War
  • - Not a ‘defining game’ for the series, but rather taking the franchise as it exists and focusing on making a great 19th century campaign game – and for that it is a total success.

  • Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing with Banjo-Kazooie
  • - Decently fun racing game.

  • Heavy Rain
  • - The grapphics don’t live up to the hype, but they are still great – and so is this game.

  • Last Rebellion
  • - Aptly named, because there will never be a sequel to this absolutely awful game.

  • Endless Ocean: Blue World
  • - Nice, fun, casually relaxing adventure game.

  • Metal Slug XX
  • - This one is decent enough, but really only mmeant for hardcore fans of the series.

What games am I playing now? Here is a sampling:

  • Mac: Din’s Curse – I love the ‘pre-order and get beta’ system Soldak used, and love watching this game get better and better from beta to beta.
  • PC: Deus Ex – if you want to see the best hybrid shooter-RPG ever, head back to this 2000 classic from Ion Storm Studios!
  • DS: Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes – OK, I’ve played it fully already, done loads of quick battles and multiplayer … so why am I back playing again? Because it is AWESOME!
  • PSP: Final Fantasy VIII – I had started this before, and am just getting back to it once again. Don’t like the main characters very much, and hoping it gets more engaging over time. Folks tell me this is one of those divisive games – you either love or hate it.

So what are you playing? Chime in below!

Enjoy gaming!

I have loved technology for as long as I can remember - and have been a computer gamer since the PDP-10! Mobile Technology has played a major role in my life - I have used an electronic companion since the HP95LX more than 20 years ago, and have been a 'Laptop First' person since my Compaq LTE Lite 3/20 and Powerbook 170 back in 1991! As an avid gamer and gadget-junkie I was constantly asked for my opinions on new technology, which led to writing small blurbs ... and eventually becoming a reviewer many years ago. My family is my biggest priority in life, and they alternate between loving and tolerating my gaming and gadget hobbies ... but ultimately benefits from the addition of technology to our lives!
