Wondering if your iPhone can be Jailbroken? Consult the Matrix

Posted on 10 March 2010 by

I get the question asked of me quite often.

It usually goes something like this.

“Larry, can I jailbreak my iPhone?”

To which I reply “well that depends.”

That enters us in to a discussion on the software and base band running on the person’s phone, the different methods used to jailbreak and so forth.

Today I stumbled upon a really nice web site which should assist not only me but anyone wondering if they can jailbreak their iPhone.

Jailbreakmatrix.com contains a chart with all of the hardware and software versions of the iPhone and what’s required to do so.  It even links each software/hardware version to the instructions and downloads needed to begin the jalbreaking process.  The chart is neatly organized and easy to navigate.

The site is sort of a work in progress and its creator promises to make changes as needed but for now it’s a nice resource for those confused as to what their phone can do.

Check it out here.

Larry, if I’m reading the directions correctly, the only way you can jailbreak when you have 3.1.3 installed is to downgrade and *then* jailbreak. So it’s not really a 3.1.3 jailbreak solution. Unless I’m missing something?

  • jailbreakmatrix

you are correct the only way to jailbreak the 3GS on 3.1.3 is to downgrade it to 3.1.2 then upgrade it to a modified version of 3.1.3, the only way to do that is if your 3GS is on the oldboot rom, why because the new bootrom wont allow you to downgrade to 3.1.2 and since you can’t do that then you cant upgrade again to a modified 3.1.3

i just updated the site to reflect the bootroms

jailbreakmatrix: well, as my son Joseph would say, “*That* tanks.” And from what I read from the Blackra1n guy, he’s not planning on updating his jailbreak software for 3.1.3. Oh well; guess I’ll just have wait patiently. Or impatiently. Or something.
