I am a rare first adopter, but I went that route with the iPhone because I was on AT&T already, my contract was up for renewal a couple of months prior to the release, and I needed a new PDA anyway.  But I have to say that, for a device that had such anticipation and built-up, there were remarkably few third-party items available for it–damn few cases, software apps (of course, no app store at first release, but still . . .), and other gear.  It was weird.

With the iPad, it’s clear gear and software companies are not going to miss the boat if they can avoid it.  And adding themselves to the list is the mobile WiFi company Boingo.  On April 3, coincident with the iPad release, Boingo is going to have an iPad WiFi app available in the app store. Boingo says:

Consumers can purchase the $1.99 Wi-Fi credits in advance or at the time of connect simply by confirming the purchase using their iTunes account login. The credits can be redeemed for 60 consecutive minutes of Wi-Fi access at a single Boingo hotspot, and can be used at any of the more than 125,000 Boingo hotspots worldwide.

So if you pre-ordered and are traveling right away, or simply want to ensure that your Boingo coverage is extended to your iPad, check it out on the app store come release time.  The app itself is free and, if you’re like me and only use boingo an hour or two at a time, it sounds like a decent deal.  And here’s the sweet part:  if you are the 1000th person to download Boingo’s app, you will win a free iPad!

Boingo Wireless, the global leader in WiFi, today announced a new application designed for iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad users that allows consumers to purchase one-hour credits for Wi-Fi service directly from their Apple iTunes account.  The “Boingo Wi-Fi Credits” software application is immediately available for download from Apple’s U.S. App Store.

Apple mobile device owners can purchase as many credits as they want. Those users who buy credits in blocks of ten will be rewarded with an additional free credit.  The credits are good for up to one full year after purchase.

“Boingo’s new Wi-Fi credits are an easy, affordable way for millions of users to buy Wi-Fi access through an existing iTunes account,” said Dave Hagan, president and CEO for Boingo Wireless. “For Apple device owners who find themselves needing Wi-Fi access only occasionally, it’s a great way to put some credits in the bank, so you can draw them down when you need them most.”

The “Boingo Wi-Fi Credits” software also identifies Boingo hotspots and allows you to search for hotspots using a new mapping feature.  The application is available immediately to iTunes users with a U.S. account and will be available to global customers in the near future.

For consumers who connect to Wi-Fi hotspots frequently, Boingo’s subscription service, “Boingo Mobile” provides unlimited global access to Boingo hotspots for just $7.95 per month.  To sign up, consumers simply download the free Boingo Mobile software, “Boingo Mobile Wi-Fi,” which is also available for free from the iTunes App Store.

Boingo Wireless, the global leader in WiFi, today announced an iPad contest giveaway to kick off the company’s new one-hour Wi-Fi offering for iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches. The company will award an iPad to the 1000th person to download and register the new “Boingo Wi-Fi Credits” software application from Apple’s U.S. App Store.

Beginning today, iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad owners can download the free “Boingo Wi-Fi Credits” application for purchasing one-hour Wi-Fi credits using their Apple iTunes account. Once installed, contestants simply launch the software and enter a valid email address for automatic entry into the contest. The 1000th person to download “Boingo Wi-Fi Credits” will be notified via email and announced on Boingo’s Facebook page.

“This might be our easiest giveaway yet. Everyone can get a free one-hour Wi-Fi credit just for downloading the app and registering a valid email address,” said Dawn Callahan, vice president of marketing for Boingo Wireless. “One lucky winner will win an Apple iPad and be among the first to own the shiny new device.”

The Boingo iPad contest begins immediately and runs until the 1000th valid email address is registered through the “Boingo Wi-Fi Credits” software application. The competition is open to everyone with a U.S.-based iTunes account. Complete rules can be found at http://www.boingo.com/blog.
