A Quick Look at the Verizon HTC Droid Incredible Android Phone

Posted on 19 April 2010

Just a few days ago we announced the new Verizon HTC Incredible, and tonight they just went live in the Verizon Wireless store. I happen to have one here, so let’s take a look inside the box, shall we? Look at all of that shiny black plastic on the front, just waiting for you to breathe on it, smudge it up, and allow dust to land on its pristine surface. The Droid Incredible measures roughly 4.6″ tall x 2.3″ wide x 0.5″ thick; it’s slightly thinner than an iPhone, with a screen that puts the iPhone’s to shame… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: FoodEssentials Scanner for iPhone

Posted on 18 April 2010

About six years ago I made a decision to change my life.  Being an athlete all of my life, I was pushed to get bigger and had always consumed a lot of calories since I burned so many.  When I began coaching, I spent all of my time teaching others how to be athletes, and there was no time to do my own sports.  I tried many dieting options with no luck until I tried the Atkins plan.  Long story short, I lost 100 pounds and got back into shape.  I now live a low-carb lifestyle and have maintained Continue reading on Gear Diary …

GearGames Weekly: April 18 – 24

Posted on 18 April 2010

Welcome back to the GearGames weekly video game release feature here at Gear Diary! Pretty weak release week once again, with a coupe of niche games coming out. First there is the Wii release of a game that has been extremely popular in Japan but not so much outside – Monster Hunter Tri. Early looks say that the game is very good and should be a blast for fans of the series. The other major release is an interesting entry to the horror-adventure genre featuring two popular characters: Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper. It was released to mixed reviews on the PC last summer, and it is unclear if any of the criticisms figured… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Sena’s iPad Case Lineup Looks Great!

Posted on 18 April 2010

I’ve long been a fan of Sena’s cases. I love the styling, the build quality and the selection they tend to offer. I especially love that they offer premium leather cases at a reasonable price. Fact is, I think I have had at least one Sena case for every one of the different devices I have owned over the last few years. (Good thing they offer a wide selection.) So I got to wondering what if anything they would be offering for the iPad. I was pleasantly surprised. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

B&N Plotting New Nooks?

Posted on 18 April 2010

Rumor has it the nook is getting some siblings. Gizmodo is reporting on buzz that there’s a nook “lite” with wifi only, plus a nook 2, headed our way this year. In addition, supposedly an update for the famous original nook will include a web browser. It’s great to see that B&N isn’t resting on their laurels here. A web browser helps in a few ways. If it’s crappy, it at least matches the Kindle 2 on another feature, and if it’s better than it gives the nook a fighting chance to add more innovative reading experiences. Don’t forget, the nook is android-based, so even a web browser with a slow refresh rate could be halfway decent… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

iPad- Like A Rorschach Ink Blot You’ll See In It What You Want To See…

Posted on 17 April 2010

I was at my physician’s yesterday. When he walked into the room his first words were… “So how’s the iPad?” (Yes even my doctors know what a tech geek I am.) I told him I love it… and I pulled it out of my bag. Then he asked me the question that has been asked over and over again, “What’s the point of it? What’s the purpose of this device? I don’t get it.” Unlike the radio DJs with whom I spoke last week (here and here) his questions weren’t statements. He actually was asking a question and wanted an answer. So I explained to him that I find I’m able… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Let Your Nerd Flag Fly with Kinekt’s Gear Ring

Posted on 17 April 2010

In James Cameron’s movie The Abyss, Bud, the director of the underwater drilling station, is a hard-core drilling hardware guy.  And to show that in a small way, for his marriage (in the film, stay with me now) to Lindsey, he makes a ring out of titanium alloy for himself.  Gold was too much of a wimpy metal for this guy, I guess. Well now, all you nerds out there have a chance to so something similar with Kinekt Design‘s genuinely cool looking gear ring.  Check this out: Kinekt says: The Gear Ring is made from high quality matte stainless steel. It features six micro-precision gears that turn in unison when the Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Intel pushing new connection standard, wants to move data at the speed of light

Posted on 17 April 2010

Image Courtesy of Intel Intel confirmed at IDF 2009 (Intel Developers Conference) that they expect manufacturers to ship Light Peak sometime in 2011. Light Peak is a connection technology similar to what USB devices do now, except it operates at 10gbps. That’s 10 gigabits per second connection rate, which is double the speed of USB 3.0, and about 20 times the speed of the current standard USB 2.0. With 3.0 becoming more mainstream everyday, I doubt it will be a full blown takeover when released, but one good thing is that it will be compatible with USB 3.0. Not sure if that means that it will simply connect a USB 3.0 device to… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Photos That Might Just Make You Dizzy

Posted on 17 April 2010

The fact that today’s cameras are taking capturing images unlike we’ve ever seen before should come as no surprise to anyone.  Technology grows every day and with it the ability to capture images both digitally and on film does as well. What might surprise you though are the photos on Utah3d.net.  Utah is a state filled with scenic landscapes and one site shows it to you unlike any I’ve ever seen.  Utah3D.net contains a portfolio of ultra hi-res pictures that are all taken in a 360 panoramic allowing you to scroll around, up and down, side to side and view every inch of each shot. Utah is known for its Continue reading on Gear Diary …

PAYware Mobile Available in Apple Retail Stores- Checking Out The iPhone Way…

Posted on 17 April 2010

The other night Elana and I went out to dinner to Legal Seafood. We love the restaurant. It offers good drinks, excellent, fresh food, and there was even a bit of tech mixed in for good measure. Who could ask for more??? The tech came at the end of the meal when we went to pay the bill. If you have been to Legal you know that they use an “at the table payment system”. That really means they use a Pocket PC device that has been enabled for use with credit cards. We asked our server what she thought of it and she said that, overall, she likes it. (She especially… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
