Over the last several years computer game Digital Downloads have been taking hold, to the point where there are several major amd minor players all succeeding and finding their own niche. The latest entry is from DotEmu, the publishers who brought us the iPhone game Golvellius that I reviewed last fall , calling them a “publisher specialized in bringing retro games to life.”
The DotEmu site features PC, iPhone and Online game entries, all of which are DRM free and are able to be downloaded again and again if needed from your account.
Here is the announcement:
We are very pleased to announce the launch of DotEmu.com portal, the place to get the best oldies on PC Digital download, iPhone or Online.
There you can get now, and without DRM, the brilliant Another World, created by Eric Chahi, available in high-definition. Relive the fabulous adventures of Broken Sword 2 and 3 or uncover the mysteries of Atlantis 3 and Atlantis Evolution. Make your choice among the collection of the Silmarils games: Ishar, Robinson’s Requiem and even DEUS!
In addition, new functionalities will be added very soon based on YOUR feedback. So keep telling us what you think and share your ideas to get the best service possible.
A lot of new titles will be added twice a week, so stay tuned!
Once you set up an account you are greeted by a friendly interface that allows you to manage your account and games painlessly.
The initial release list was fairly thin, but the addition of the classic Syberia adventure games really helps them out. Those games are excellent stories featuring a strong female lead, something all too rare in video games.
Signing up at DotEmu is free, and will get you on a mailing list so you can watch as games are added to the service. Is there a downside? Perhaps – I have games scattered across every major and minor service possible, and have ended up double-purchasing as a result. Also, it is unlikely that 5 years from now all of the players will still exist, so it is important to take advantage of the ability to download the game files and back them up.
I hope that DotEmu is successful … and look forward to even more cool games being brought back and made workable for modern operating systems!
