Quit Smoking on World No Tobacco Day with “The Joy” iPhone App

Posted on 31 May 2010 by

Coming from a family with a generations-long history of substance abuse, I’ve always been very, very careful about things like alcohol and cigarettes (and Vicodin, and Percoset, and . . .).  But some are not so lucky, and get hooked on King Tobacco and can’t get off, even when they want to quit.  A whole host of methods exist to help, from electronic cigarettes to nicotine patches to biofeedback.  But hey, it’s the 21st Century!  Time for an iPhone app!  (Which makes sense to me, since I’m personally never without mine.)

Now available is the very thing:  an application from Spanish company MUBIQUO and called “The Joy,” the application purports to use pleasurable means to help you quit smoking, and has been released just in time for World No Tobacco Day, Monday, May 31.  Available from iTunes for an MSRP of $0.99.  Why not give it a try?

Full information below.

“The Joy”, an iPhone application is based on “The Joy of Quitting Smoking” a medical method developed by the popular doctor and therapist Masgrau Miquel (www.masgrau.net). This method is known because the quitting process is based on pleasure and not on sacrifice. Approaches addiction to tobacco from various points of view, although they all converge on the strength of will, which is essential to overcome tobacco addiction and stay quit.

The application interacts and gives support to the user at any time he / she feels the urge to smoke. The interactive support is based on personalized messages received during 21 days, separated on 3 stages, the length that the process of becoming an ex smoker will take.

The first seven days the smoker can keep smoking, but from day 8, the user gets in to the stage of
emancipation. Cigarettes are finished forever. Each time a strong desire to smoke comes to the user, a reinforcing message will be displayed and customized greetings to reward the user effort will be received.

”The Joy” is actually available in English, Spanish and Catalan, and you can find it at the iTunes Store.

The Joy is an application developed by MUBIQUO (www.mubiquo.com) and Ideas for Change (www.ideasforchange.com).

Doug is a nerd from way back, falling for a Commodore PET at the age of 15, and never looking back. Riding the nerd wave, he got a Computer Science degree and entered the tech industry at a young age, deciding after a year and a half of front-line phone technical support that he should try something, *anything* else. He settled on technical writing, and has been cranking out documentation for companies like Unisys, SGI, Cisco, Juniper, and many others ever since. The fact that he commutes between his family in Austin and his day job in California is something that he is simply trying to live with. (Isabelle the Corgi helps.)
