Remember Skiff? It’s the ereading platform that was supposed to do for periodicals what the Kindle did for ebooks; bring them into the electronic reading age. Of course, there are a few things you need to actually make that happen, such as a device or a platform. And Skiff didn’t have one, at least not one that was released widely. In fact, a quick poke around their website reveals a whole lot of marketing ideas and some press releases about a partnership with Samsung. No word on when or if the Skiff Reader was on track for release, and no word on any actual shipping platform. Skiff was more of an idea of a service than… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Apple opened up their online stores for pre-ordering of the iPhone early this morning. However, as of 6:50 AM EST there appears to be two major issues. 1. The iPhone 4 is currently available for pre-order only in black. No white iPhones will be delivered on June 24th. Apple says the white version will be available some “this summer”. Hopefully that becomes a little clearer sooner rather than later. 2. You can’t actually order a phone as the Apple site is so bogged down it’s crashing during the ordering process for almost everyone who tries. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Jeep has such a storied and legendary history while also being the one brand most synonymous with offroad. For nearly half a century the iconic runabout carried American servicemen and women to and from their assigned posts and in recent decades the Jeep Wrangler has garnered more “best of” awards in the offroad segment than all competitors combined. Several years back Jeep decided to expand the platform a bit, stretching the chassis from two doors to four, giving birth to the Wrangler Unlimited.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Image courtesy of OCZ Solid State Drives have been around for a few years and now and are definetely some of the fastest storage you can buy. With lower power consumption, lower heat, and blazing fast speeds they are quickly finding their way into desktops, laptops, and servers. The biggest problem is that the price per GB is absolutely rediculous compared to a newer HDD that are now well into the 1TB range for $100 or less. Newegg had a Shell Shocker (daily deal) a few weeks back for an OCZ Agility 60 SSD, so I decided to bite the bullet and pick one up for my Asus 1005PR Netbook. I figured it was a perfect candidate… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I’ve always wanted a Tokyo Flash watch but just haven’t pulled the trigger and ordered one. Partly because their designs are so intricate I’m worried I won’t be able to figure them out and partly because I’m a person that doesn’t like waiting. I need that immediate satisfaction. So when I stumbled upon the Nixon Newton while shopping at my local mall the other day I snatched one up. The Newton features a two-hand quartz movement with an LED light and rotating disc. No numbers on this watch. You’ll actually have to think about the time when you glance at it. The watch comes in eight different color choices. I opted for… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Last month I provided an introduction to the series I am now kicking off for real: a look back at the last decade as seen through the lens of a PC Single Player RPG fan. Now after getting all of the full reviews completed for my top games for last year, it is time to begin the journey in earnest by looking at five games that shaped the genre in 2009! As a reminder of what I’m doing, as we enter a new decade I thought it was worth taking a look back at the last decade and what has been happening in the PC role playing game genre. The 2000′s saw great upheaval… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Here is a deal on one of my favorite Mac utilitites… A Better Finder Rename is the best way to rename a ton of files quickly and easily. For example, if you have all your vacation pictures and want to name them “Summer 2010″ and follow with ascending numbers A Better Find Renamer will get the job done in seconds. The application does a whole lot more than that however as you will discover if you visit the developer’s page on it. Normally $19.95 it is on sale today for just $9.95. Considering how useful I find it to be that is a steal in my opinion. You can get more information… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean the ebook news isn’t flowing! There’s debate, financial failures, and the endangerment of some innocent Kindles. Excited? Read on to learn more! First of all, if you watched WWDC you probably caught Steve Job’s claim that iBooks has 22% of the ebook market. My first thought was that it wasn’t possibly true, since Random House is the biggest publisher around and they’ve held out steadily against the agency model. As it turns out, the New York Times came to a similar conclusion, pointing out that without Random House and small publishing houses Apple isn’t close to that 22% number. While the New York Times… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

[image via MidCo Systems ] My friends frequently give me a hard time over my obsession with mobile technology. Like the rest of the Gear Diary team — and very likely the majority of the site’s readers — I do my best to not only stay up to date but to get a lot of hands on use with various technological gear that help to untether me from the confinement of a desk. To me that’s the real point of it all: the freedom to go do what you want, when you want and still be able to take care of your work responsibilities.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

How about we start off the week with a good old fashioned desktop computer as our Gear Deal for the day. Or more accurately, a good old fashioned desktop computer that is a powerhouse. The Dell Studio XPS 8100 is loaded. It has a Core i7-860 Quad-core processor running at 2.8GHz. It ships with 6GB DDR3 memory, includes a 21.5″ Dell ST2210 1080p HDMI LCD Monitor, has a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce G310 graphics card, and a 750GB hard drive spinning at 7200 RPM. But there is more… More as in, the computer includes a 16X DVD+/-RW, a Multimedia Keyboard & Optical Mouse, a 15 month subscription to McAfee Security Center and comes pre-loaded Windows 7 Home… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

News has been leaking out over the last few days about the new Motorola Droid phones. They sound amazing, with high end specs like a 4.3 inch screen, 8 megapixel camera, even HDMI out. Unfortunately, it looks like Moto is also going to be slapping MotoBlur on these phones, and that’s a huge disappointment for me. It’s not that I think stock Android is the greatest thing since sliced bread. To be honest, it’s far too plain for me. But I fix that with home replacements. I’ve tried several and for now have settled on LauncherPro. It’s simple, it’s customizable, it doesn’t slow my phone down, and it’s free. And if I decide I hate it… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Ironically, on the same day that GearDiary had to move to a new server, I got am email from Jason Crane that his RSS and iTunes feeds had been restored. From the message: A few weeks ago, hackers took down The Jazz Session site and disabled the RSS and iTunes feed. I’m happy to report that with the help of Tim and Kevin and a (very) little ingenuity of my own, the feed is now FIXED. It may take several hours for new episodes to appear in the iTunes store, but the RSS feed is working right now and can be used with iTunes or any other RSS reader or podcast grabber. Since… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
