I always loved science toys when I was a kid. For me, the best part of going to the Boy Scout Jamboree in 1985 was the trip to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. Back then, the closest I could get to a solar powered device was a soalr powered calculator or a radiometer. At least one of those was carried by the gift shop. Back then, it was very expensive to buy a cell that could power a motor with just sunlight. Not today. EFO Gadget shop has three new and interesting solar powered toys. The first are two mock insects we either… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Image Courtesy of Engadget. I woke this morning to find an e-mail from Apple letting me know that my iPhone 4 will be delivering on Wednesday 6/23 one day earlier than the scheduled world wide launch. The e-mail reads as follows: I’m not sure I believe that the iPhone 4 will in fact deliver a day early but according to Engadget lots of other people have received similar e-mails. What’s even more curious is that when I received my initial tracking number from the Apple store it too indicated a delivery date… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

And the eBook Price Wars of 2010 have begun! The opening shots were fired this morning by Barnes and Noble, who announced not only the rumored “Nook lite”, a WiFi-only nook for $149.99, but they also slashed the price of the nook to $199! The ink was barely dry on the various “Amazon should drop the price of the Kindle” articles before Amazon did, in fact, drop the price of the Kindle to $189. Yes, Amazon slashed the Kindle price to just below B&N’s nook pricing. Now that’s harsh. This has some serious implications for the ebook market. First of all, Sony needs to act fast to protect what little marketshare they have. The PRS-300, the small 5… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Kevin and I recently returned from San Francisco to find that Daisy Duke, our Great Dane puppy, had managed to pick up what seemed like thousands of tiny little ticks while being boarded at her breeders. We all live in the country and we’re having an exceptionally hot early summer after an extremely wet spring which followed a rather mild winter (are you still with me?), so I’m really not surprised that ticks are currently enjoying a population explosion. Daisy is treated monthly with Frontline, and her breeder had just bathed her with insecticidal shampoo before we picked her up as well as given her several insecticidal spot treatments, but when Daisy… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I know, I know; but it’s hard for me to resist silly wordplay. I’m a professional writer; what can I say? Well, what I can say is, ADATA technology, hailing from my adopted son’s homeland in Taiwan, is making available flash memory based on Disney’s popular Toy Story franchise. These thumb drives come in 4 GB and 8GB models, and for an MSRP of about $25 to $45 from your USB gadget dealer of choice. So if your kids need some flash drive for their schoolwork–my daughter’s schools require it!–maybe you should consider Buzz, Woody, and his friends. Full information below. I have a 7-port hub on my system at home (Don’t ask; it has to do with the lack of a docking station for my Lenovo work laptop . . .), and sometimes I wish I could just toggle some of the ports on and off so that, say, my backup 1TB hard disk isn’t accessed every time I purge my recycle bin, or whatever. Well, as part of this week’s new releases from USBFever, they offer just that very thing: a four port hub with on/off toggles for your USB manipulation pleasure. What else are they introducing? Read on: Squid-like 4-Port USB Hub for Mac USB 4 Continue reading on Gear Diary …

While in San Francisco, fellow attendees of the Netshelter Publisher’s Summit were treated to a reception hosted by Toshiba. One of the things I most liked was their display set up in the room, representative of laptop models past and present — including a few of the libretto line. I always wanted a libretto … But the fun really began when I was clandestinely pulled into a side room and given a chance to see two of their latest, including the libretto Concept PC with Dual-Touch Screen Design. Calling it a concept PC that was actually being produced, albeit in limited quantities… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I was playing Internet Go a couple of years ago and got myself an inexpensive web cam so that I could exchange video with my opponent, who lived on Lake Baikal–how cool is that? When I look at the web cams available now, mine might as well be made of cardboard and Elmer’s glue, like the one I made in photography class in middle school. Really, the pace of innovation is pretty amazing. As if I don’t feel bad enough about my pathetic device, Genius decided it was time to make me feel even worse by coming up with a couple of new web cam offerings, including (good lord) an HD model. So are you looking for… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
