I can’t speak for every geek in the world, of course, but I would bet if you polled nerds over the age of, say, 40, you would find that a lot of them have a sneaking admiration for Erno Rubik, inventor of the eponymous cube (as well as a number of other things–I enjoy the Rubik’s Snake quite a bit, myself).  An introverted professor who invented a puzzle game that turned into a worldwide phenomenon?  Geekly dreams are made of such stuff.

Well now, on Prof. Rubik’s 66th birthday, everyone–everyone with an iPhone 4, anyway–can see what the fuss was all about.  Prof. Rubik’s creation is available now for you iPhone 4, using its gyroscope, for an MSRP of only $3 on iTunes.  Relive your past ill-spent youth, or find out what all the fuss is about.  Either way, admire the simple genius of a shy man, and feed your geek puzzle needs.

Full information below.

In today’s news, Erno Rubik, the inventor of the world-famous Rubik’s Cube, celebrates his 66th birthday.  30 years after the Rubik’s Cube was introduced to the world, here are a few of its contributions to the science & technology community:

  • iPhone App: This month, the official Rubik’s Cube iPhone app launched.  This is the ONLY mobile Rubik’s Cube approved by Erno Rubik.  Got an iPhone 4?  You’ll be able to maneuver the Rubik’s Cube with a flick of your wrist, or get a better look as you move your phone with new motion controls made possible with the new iPhone 4 gyroscope.
  • Rubik’s Goes Electronic: The Rubik’s Revolution, introduced in summer 2007, was the first electronic version of the Cube.  The Rubik’s TouchCube introduced touch sensor technology and a motion-detecting accelerometer.  This year, the Rubik’s Slide will launch, which turns the Cube into a game of speed and strategy with LED light display patterns.
  • In The Classroom: This year, more than 1000 schools across the U.S. are using theYou CAN Do The Rubik’s Cube program to teach geometry, algebra, algorithms, problem-solving, and critical thinking to students grades 3-12.

Doug is a nerd from way back, falling for a Commodore PET at the age of 15, and never looking back. Riding the nerd wave, he got a Computer Science degree and entered the tech industry at a young age, deciding after a year and a half of front-line phone technical support that he should try something, *anything* else. He settled on technical writing, and has been cranking out documentation for companies like Unisys, SGI, Cisco, Juniper, and many others ever since. The fact that he commutes between his family in Austin and his day job in California is something that he is simply trying to live with. (Isabelle the Corgi helps.)
