I normally hate traveling for work; juggling a computer, work files, ebook reader, etc. is a pain. However, now that I’ve been trying the Mobile Edge Evo Backpack for a few weeks, I wish I traveled more often so I could use a bag like this!

My first impression of the Evo backpack was that it was a complete beast of a bag. It seemed physically large, but when I put it on it didn’t feel as big. Part of that is how structured the bag is; this is not a bag that appears smaller when it is empty. On the other hand, stuffing it to the brim didn’t make it appear huge either. And the padded pack and straps made it incredibly comfortable to keep either on both shoulders or just slung over one side. It did tower over my normal shoulder bag though!

What really made the Evo stand out is the sheer number of pockets and organizing areas it has. I counted 5 zippered pockets on the outside, and an additional 2 mesh outside and 2 smaller divided pockets inside the front lower pocket. There’s also a hidden pocket for a water bottle on one side. The pockets are a mix of shallow ones (perfect for storing quick grab items like a boarding pass) and deeper ones for your wallet, keys, etc.

Inside is where the serious organizing starts. There’s a large padded area for a laptop, which fits up to a 15 inch computer. My 10 inch netbook swims in it a little bit, but there’s plenty of room for the charger as well the computer, or my netbook inside another sleeve. Along the outside of the padded area are two little stash pockets and a large zippered mesh pocket for more storage. On the opposite side is organizer heaven (if you are OCD like me and like every possible item to have a home.) There are slots for pens, business cards, a small hard drive, even flash drives! There’s also a big slash pocket behind the organizer panel that is the perfect size for an ebook reader. Both my Kindle and the nook I’m reviewing fit perfectly in that spot. And no backpack is complete without some form of headphones management, so there’s yet another pocket with a small headphones hole to feed the wires and keep you from being tangled.

Just in case you think that’s the extent of the pockets, there’s also two mesh pockets on each of the shoulder straps. The straps themselves are very padded, with a slight contour that makes them very comfortable on your shoulders. I generally don’t love wearing backpacks for long periods of time, but these straps fit so well that after a bit you forget you even have the pack on! The padding along the back helps as well. It not only makes the Evo more comfortable, it adds some breathing room so on a hot day the backpack isn’t smashed up against your body trapping heat. And as an added bonus, it also means your laptop has an extra bit of padding, so if you’re wearing the straps loosely and there’s some bounce you aren’t slamming into your notebook repeatedly.

While using this backpack, it really did amaze me how much I could fit into it without it feeling overstuffed. I fit my netbook, a nook, my kindle, a change of clothes, a water bottle, and a paper book all in the pack, and it didn’t look like it was bursting. Best of all, because of all the various pockets (and the sturdy construction) getting in and out of the bag was super easy. I didn’t feel like I was carrying half my office on my back, and nothing seemed impossible to find. In fact, having all the inner pockets meant everything had a place, and it was a simple matter to reach in, grab what I needed, and keep moving.

So clearly, I loved this backpack. The only minor flaw I found was that it could have used a waist or chest strap for extra support on your back. Otherwise it was comfortable, fit an astounding amount of stuff, had plenty of pockets, but didn’t feel overly large. If you travel often, and carry a small office with you, this backpack is a must-have!

Now that I’ve sung the praises of the Evo backpack, you’re probably all set to get one! Well, before you whip out your wallet, here’s your chance to win one! Carly has been a gadget fiend for a long time, going back to her first PDA (a Palm M100). She quickly went from researching what PDA to buy to following tech news closely and keeping up with the latest and greatest stuff. She loves writing about ebooks because they combine her two favorite activities; reading anything and everything, and talking about fun new tech toys. What could be better?

I’m using some generic laptop backpack I got at a vendor-sponsored event several years back. It’s definitely starting to show its age so a new backpack for laptops would be great. I like the idea that this doesn’t get bigger. I struggle with that regularly when trying to over-stuff this laptop. Also looks like this is a little better organized than my current backpack.

I currently carry an old Timbuk2 Commute messenger bag.

It looks like the Evo would be a great backpack for an overnight business trip. Just the one backpack, my laptop, a few other gadgets and a change of clothes.

I have no eBook reader… I have to carry so many heavy books…
    I have a freakishly old 10lb laptop…
    I have about 10 1GB flash drives…
My current backpack’s dividers all have huge holes, making my backpack one big pocket…

This would be a wonderful bag for daily use. I currently carry a tote and purse with all my girl stuff and ipad. I sometimes still carry a paper planner for some projects. I also brown bag it so I can hit the gym at lunch and eat at my desk afterwards. It looks like I could combine the tote, lunch and gym bag all in the backpack.

My 15″pavilion, original zune, books, pen, pencils, sketchpad, travel mouse, flash drives, cyber-shot, memory sticks, sometimes power brick/charger and sync cables.

  • uzziah0

I carry with me my SE w810i, Dell Axim x51v, and sometimes my work laptop, an HP 8510w (but I’m getting a personal laptop soon, so what ever that will be, would be in there instead).
It’d be nice to have some sneakers, gym shoes and a t-shirt every once in a while, too.
For work, I bring my lunch most days too.

Let’s see – I carry an iPod Touch, lunch, a phone, occasionally a few books (think omnibus sized or paperback novels), occasionally a charger for the iPod or a battery pack… quite a few things, including the odd camera.

This pack would be pretty nice given that I’ve got a variety of things to lug around, and currently use a small satchel for them. Plus for travel, this would save me a lot of decision making when it comes to backpacking. :D

I regularly carry this handbag, but the zipper’s broken, and it fits about 3 water bottles, much less have room for a laptop. The Evo backpack would be very useful since I can upgrade to a backpack that is good for shopping, hiking, etc.

I have used the Mobile Edge Premium backpack for almost 5 years. This has been the best backpack ever. I always have a laptop (sometimes 2), workout clothes, toolkit, tons of accessories and my lunch. I really want to try out the new EVO to see how it compares to the the Premium.

    Great review!!!

I carry my laptop and charger a lot because I take them to school, and don’t trust the lockers there to keep them safe – we had a break in a while ago. And since its a hassle to drop them off at home, they usually come with me out wherever it is I’m going. Having an EVO backpack to better distribute the weight would be a load of my shoulders!

  • andrew_lee

I carry a netbook, sometimes with charger, a Kindle, a Zune 30, sometimes a Vado, and various flash drives, pens, pencils, etc. The EVO would really help to organize this stuff.

I would definitely carry my doom mate’s laptop , which she offered to lend to me. I would also carry my usual papers , pencils , pens and all types of other utensils needed for a student. This backpack would make my life easier by being able to stuff almost all of my regular supplies into itself. (including my friend’s laptop)

It looks like the bag has enough room for me to carry my laptop, binder, lunch and shoes.

  • http://mike.karrmedia.com mikekarr

It is not possible to own enough bags. I carry my lunch, an HTC Evo, tablet pc, flash drives, ipod shuffle, random chargers and headphones, some anise squares and some mints. Also a few of those little Starbucks via packets just in case.

  • erinlindsey524

This backpack looks like I can use it to carry my laptop, possibly also my 8.9 inch netbook, and I think I can get both my Kindles (I have the K1 and the K2) into it.

I wonder if there would be enough room to carry a small crochet or knitting project too…or maybe even a larger crochet or knitting project.

My old backpack is starting to show it’s age. I’ve had it for about 15yrs and it’s so old, it’s from before they started making spaces for laptops.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Winston-Chang/100000157167094 Winston Chang

Wow, this backpack has a lot of pockets! If I were to win this one, I would use it to carry my laptop, chargers iPod nano, flash drive, couple notebooks, and head phone.

  • Emily Santos

This backpack would make my life so much easier by providing me the room to put extra clothes (because I sweat a lot) and my netbook. And I am sure I can put other stuff in addition to those two.

  • zorobailan201

Since I have a desktop, I can’t really put the backpack to it’s intent purpose. So for the time being, I will mainly use it to carry my crazy load of textbooks and binder.

  • arvindr

Regularly carry a laptop, charger (since I have to travel and forget them if they are not in the bag), assorted pens, notebook/paper pad, manila folders, memory cards and a camera. Before summer, I would use a Scottvest jacket to carry them around but with the blistering heat, I will need to find another system and the EVO looks like it might be a good option.

  • geocacher1

The problem is not what I carry but that I carry too much. 15″ laptop, camera, PDA, GPSr, a ton of cables and adapters, flashlight, tools etc. When i travel for 2 or 3 days my computer bag is always bigger than my suitcase. So anything that might be lighter and easier to pack would be a boon.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kara-Munoz/100000181189653 Kara Munoz

I carry some of EVERYTHING when we head out- we’ve got both Blackberry & Android, ipod touches, camcorder, Go Pro for underwater, plus my DSLR camera… This would go a LONG way to helping me look as organized as all this stuff makes me!
