When I was at TeleNav’s Waypoint in February they showed us a neat little app called OnMyWay. We saw an early build and were told that it was… well, it was OnTheWay. Well now it is here and it is available for free. OnMyWay is a great app for those of us who actually like to be on time and hate when we are running late for a meeting. Despite best efforts, however, there are times when you are just going to be late. OnMyWay is for those times. OnMyWay is… is a simple-to-use notification application that Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I am a longtime Palm supporter; I had a Palm Pilot 1000 within a few weeks of their release. I loved the built-in Graffiti, the form factor, the built-in functionality . . . I was a big fan. And until Palm started dying on the vine, I continued to purchase Palm devices in favor of other options (we pause now to acknowledge the before-it’s-time greatest of my old Tapwave Zodiac). So I was pretty excited to see Palm come out with WebOS and the Pre. Well, I know it ain’t selling all that great, but Astraware hasn’t given up, bless ‘em, and they are now offering a number of games for webOS. Yay, Astraware! Want… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Although Gear Diary’s very own Dan Cohen has been, um, concerned about the “undercooked”ness of the Dell Streak, it seems not unlikely that there will be quite a few sold. And if you’re one of the buyers, you’re probably thinking that you want it covered and safe. And PDAir is thinking the same thing, which is why they’re offering a set of cases in the $50 range. The full list of PDAir cases are: Leather Case for Dell Streak – Flip Type (Black) Leather Case for Dell Streak – Book Type (Black) Leather Case for Dell Streak – Horizontal Pouch Type (Black) Leather Case for Dell Streak – Horizontal Continue reading on Gear Diary …

While B&N had some disappointing financial results, Amazon is riding high on some good news this week. They’ve had glowing early reviews for the Kindle 3, and some (unofficial) numbers indicate they’re trouncing Apple in the ebook wars. First, the Kindle 3 reviews. CNET, Kindle Review and several other sites received review units, and everyone uniformly loved it! It sounds like the new screen and smaller size really help the Kindle to shine. Len Edgerly did a great video review as well (via Teleread): So the glowing reviews of the Kindle 3 are certainly one way to kill the “OMG iPAD IS GOING TO KILLLLLLL THE KINDLE” meme. But… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I’m not just grumbling about the ‘good old days’ or something like that … as we have spent a good amount of the summer listening to the local pop radio station or the ’80′s, 90′s and Today’ station on Slacker I have commented repeatedly how so much of the pop music sounds like it was written by committee … and that the committees seem to share many common members! Now someone has looked at three of the hottest songs of the summer – Ke$sha’s Tik Tok, Katy Perry’s California Gurls, and Miley Cyrus’ Permanent December – are basically the same song. A little pitch shift on one, a little tempo boost on another and BAM! Here… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

OtterBox’s flagship case, the Defender, provides an unparalleled level of protection. But not without a price. The Defender is considered by some to be big and sometimes even bulky. What isn’t up for argument however is OtterBox’s quality and the level of customer service they put behind every one of their cases. The company understands that the Defender isn’t for everyone and that’s why they’ve developed three levels of iPhone protection. The recently released Commuter Series case for the iPhone 4 is OtterBox’s mid-level protective case. While the Commuter doesn’t provide the same amount of shock and impact protection as the Defender it does offer a decent amount and it comes with port… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Here’s a case of someone relying too much on technology and it coming back to bite them. Professional golfer Jim Furyk was disqualified from this week’s PGA Tour event, the Barclays. Now being disqualified from a tour event isn’t too uncommon. Golfers mistakenly break rules now and then which unfortunately result in them being removed from the field. But Furyk was kicked out of this week’s even before it even started. And who’s to blame? His cell phone! The story went something like this….. As part of each PGA Tour event players are required to play in a Pro-Am tournament on the Wednesday before the even begins. Furyk went to bed Tuesday night but not… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Image courtesy of Google Does Google’s free app goodness ever end? Whether you’re a fan of Google or not, you must admit that the free services they offer are among some of the best. Google is constantly adding new apps and upgrading existing ones to their huge lineup. Google chat expanded a few months ago with the addition of letting you communicate via video and voice (plugin required) to someone right from the chat window. Google announced this morning that now you don’t even need to pickup your phone anymore to make free calls to the US and Canada directly from your Gmail. Since your contacts are fully integrated into Gmail, you can just call… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

If you have played Dragon Age, you’ll recognize the lady in the screenshot as Morrigan. Today Bioware announced that the FINAL DLC add-on to the original Dragon Age: Origins will be released on September 7th and be called Witch Hunt. As noted there “”Never follow me.” With these words, Morrigan vanished into the shadows. Her plans and her whereabouts have remained a mystery… until now. But whether you seek answers, revenge, or reconciliation with your lost love, you may find more than you bargained for.” Here are some details from the press release: The dreaded Archdemon has been slain and the advance of the darkspawn halted by a lone, heroic Grey Warden. I honestly can’t recall the last time I specifically ordered a new release CD, and was excited about the arrival of the physical product. Sure I’ve been sent a few and won some others and have grabbed a couple of special releases over the past several years. In those cases either someone else made the choice or there were pack-ins that made getting the music in physical form necessary. But in general all I care about is the music and I am happy to get it in digital form through either iTunes or Amazon. But this week we have what has to be the coolest release of the year. A CD case that is itself… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

We are all feeling the financial pinch! Blue Plate Special is a weekly review of bargain apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Nothing over $.99. I was browsing the App Store for possible Blue Plate Specials and I was hankering for something different. Maybe with the stress of a new football season and the start of school, I just needed something new. I came across Graffiti Ball while looking at some other applications from Backflip Studios, creators of some fine free games. Actually, the icon caught my eye and the name sounded pretty different so I decided… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

In a recent interview Acer’s Chairman JT Wang predicted that the iPad’s near-100% market share in the tablet space would drop to between 20 and 30 percent. Now PC World has posted an article entitled “Five Reasons to Pick an HP Tablet Over an iPad”. So I thought I would add my voice into the mix and offer up Five Reasons They Should SHUT IT! No, actually I only need ONE! Neither Acer nor HP has actually released a device and until they do there is NOTHING to talk about. Nothing! I mean, when we were at CES we saw TONS of tablets and all were promised… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Divvy is a cool little Mac application that lets you… well it lets you divvy up your Mac’s screen in a variety of ways. The application presents you with 36 boxes.
