Welcome back to the GearGames weekly video game release feature here at Gear Diary! Following on last week’s mammoth launch of Halo: Reach, this week we have a major PC launch – Civilization V, the follow on to the fourth entry to the massively successful turn-based strategy game franchise from 2005.

The other game struggling for my time is yet another sequel, Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City for the DS. The first two were brutally difficult and forced you to draw your own maps, and were loads of fun.

The PC strategy simulation Patrician IV ended up with a delay and is supposed to launch this week, along with the PC version of Darksiders, and the XBOX version of Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter. And there are a few other releases this week – read on to find out!

Some notes from last week:

  • Halo: Reach
  • - Despite more than a few criticisms, most folks really love this game.

  • Flight Control HD
  • - Solid game, but really is more of a portable game (i.e. iPod Touch) than a console game.

  • Phantasy Star Portable 2
  • - Better than the first – though that was a low bar – PSP2 offers a huge amount of content and plenty to do!

  • Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
  • - Continues the excellent franchise with another must-have entry!

  • Dawn of Heroes
  • - Was the long wait worth it? Sort of, as this is a fun game but decidedly average and unoriginal.

  • The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest
  • - Some fun but overall a solidly average experience.

What games am I playing now? Here is a sampling:

  • PC: King’s Bounty: Crossworlds – just digging into this massive new expansion to one of the best games of 2008!
  • PSP: Valkyria Chronicles II – that is the thing with huge games like this – it takes forever to finish!
  • PSP: Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep – I hate having to use the UMD … but love the game!

So what are you playing? Chime in below!

Enjoy gaming!

Mobile Technology has played a major role in my life - I have used an electronic companion since the HP95LX more than 20 years ago, and have been a 'Laptop First' person since my Compaq LTE Lite 3/20 and Powerbook 170 back in 1991! As an avid gamer and gadget-junkie I was constantly asked for my opinions on new technology, which led to writing small blurbs ... and eventually becoming a reviewer many years ago. My family is my biggest priority in life, and they alternate between loving and tolerating my gaming and gadget hobbies ... but ultimately benefits from the addition of technology to our lives!
