Next month the Unreal-engine powered dungeon crawl meets action-RPG meets tower defense game launches for the PC, PS3 and XBOX360. It looks awesome as shown in the screen at the top and the launch trailer at the bottom, so naturally I pre-ordered as soon as it became possible, opting for the discount and free item deal on GamersGate (still available).
Here is the description:
Dungeon Defenders is an original hybrid of two hot genres: Tower Defense and cooperative online Action-RPG!
The game puts players in the role of one of four distinctive hero classes, tasked with fending off hordes of invading beasties by strategically summoning a variety of Defenses & Traps throughout their castle. But as much more than just a strategy game, players directly participate in the action-packed combat with their hero characters, while upgrading their statistics, gathering tons of loot and inventory items, customizing & upgrading equipment, and developing unique class abilities. All of this can be enjoyed in seamless online and split-screen local multiplayer, as players cooperate and compete through the story campaign and challenge missions to build the strongest heroes and achieve the highest scores in the kingdom.
Combining the depth of strategic gaming with the satisfying action of RPG character building, in a beautifully stylized ‘toon fantasy setting, Dungeon Defenders is designed to be a distinctly addictive, easy-to-play experience for casual and hardcore gamers alike!
We have recently learned that it will also be the first Unreal Engine game coming to the iPhone and iPad! From PocketGamer:
Tower defence game Dungeon Defenders is set to be the first publicly available iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad title that uses Unreal Engine 3.
The game, which is being developed by independent studio Trendy Entertainment, was initially announced as a downloadable title for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Kotaku points out a forum thread on the game’s official website in which Trendy Entertainment’s managing director Jeremy Stieglitz has posted video of the game being played on three iPhone devices and an iPad.
With Dungeon Defenders set for release on consoles and PC, the question to be raised is whether the iPhone and iPad versions will be released at the same price. If not, will content will be stripped in lieu of a lower price?
Subsequent to that PocketGamer reported that the game was also coming to Android, saying:
We reported just the other week that Dungeon Defenders – a graphically rich mixture of tower defense and hack ‘n’ slash action – was on its way to iPhone and iPad.
Now we’ve had it confirmed that Trendy Entertainment is working on an Android version, too.
An inquisitive Twitterer asked if the multiplayer-capable game would be headed to the Google platform, to which Trendy Entertainment replied “Yessir.” Short, sharp, and polite. We like it.
But before you break out the party hats and make room on your current smartphone … we now know that the game won’t run on ANY current handset! More from PocketGamer:
We’ve just received a tip that might knock the wind out of Android owners’ sails – the game won’t run on any Android handset currently on the market. It’s being designed instead for the next generation of devices, which will sport the Tegra 2 GPU.
Nexus One user Slighmd went onto the Trendy Entertainment forum to ask whether his beloved handset – which, after all, is still technically Google’s flagship device – would be supported. He got this response:
“Currently the Android version of DunDef only runs on next-gen Android devices using the Tegra2 GPU (they are not even on the market yet, but are expected this holiday season).”
As they note:
However, that doesn’t explain the abandonment of the Samsung Galaxy S (and its variants), which can more than hold its own against the iPhone 4. You could argue that it wouldn’t make sense to support such a limited number of devices, but at least it’s a known quantity, unlike the unreleased Tegra 2 devices.
Oh well … at least I know I will be playing it on my PC … and probably both the iPad and iPod Touch!
Aside from grabbing the just released Angry Birds and waiting (im)patiently for Plants vs. Zombies – what is YOUR favorite Android game currently?
For now, enjoy the trailer:
