The New SCOTTEVEST Carry-On Coat

Last Monday we brought some clarity to the question of baggage fees and the conflict that erupted when SCOTTEVEST’s ad was rejected from Delta Sky Magazine. Millions of people have heard or read about the story in some form, but if you missed it you can read our post HERE. For more background, please skip to the bottom of this post, but the fun part is right below. So, all pun intended, let’s Carry-On!

At the end of last Monday’s post we mentioned that there was more to come… there was… and here it is..

gear diary Tech Clothing Contests & Giveaways Gear Diary/SCOTTEVEST Carry On Contest: What’s In Your SCOTTEVEST?

On Friday, October 22, Scott will be submitting ads to in-flight magazines, including Delta Sky Magazine, for an entirely new product, the SCOTTEVEST Carry-On Coat, which has 33 pockets and is designed to hold enough wardrobe, toiletries and travel items for a weekend away… without bags.

gear diary Tech Clothing Contests & Giveaways Gear Diary/SCOTTEVEST Carry On Contest: What’s In Your SCOTTEVEST?

Just how much can the Carry-On Coat hold?

The contest…

Tell us and Delta how a SCOTTEVEST can help save on baggage fees.

It is that simple and the prizes are great. You can do this in any number of ways.

We prefer video explanations via YouTube, but if you’re camera shy, feel free to just tell us in words; make it pithy, though.

Each Video and/or Post MUST end with the following statement: “That’s how SCOTTEVEST can save on baggage fees!

You don’t need to have a SCOTTEVEST to enter, but if you do have an SeV product, feel free show us What’s In Your SCOTTEVEST.

Here’s an example of what you might enter into the contest. The coat I’m wearing is the new SeV Revolution; a full review is on the way.

Contest Details:

Deadline for all entries is 6PM PT on Friday, October 22

All entries MUST be posted in the comments section (below) – include your YouTube link and/or description below.

In your description on YouTube if you submit video, please include the following words: “What’s In Your SCOTTEVEST – Carry-On Contest”. Please be sure to tag your video: “SCOTTEVEST, Travel Clothing, Gear Diary, Carry-on, Delta, No Baggage Ad Contest” and include a link to both www.GearDiary.com and www.scottevest.com in your description. You still need to post a link to it in the comments below this article, or we might miss it.

Some suggestions for your entry:

What you would carry in your pockets that would otherwise require a bag?

What would you spend the extra money on instead of fees?

Where would you be going?

What are you going to be doing?

Check out prior WIYS (What’s In Your SCOTTEVEST) contest entries and www.NoBaggageChallenge.com for some ideas from Rolf Potts (and a separate contest).

We’re looking for creativity, cleverness, funniness, appropriateness (this needs to pass the magazine ad censors), and ultimately something we can quote in an ad running in airline magazines.

Prizes:

1st prize - 25,000 Delta Frequent Flyer Points transferred to your account (this is enough miles for a free US domestic flight), and a SCOTTEVEST Carry-On Coat. PLUS SCOTTEVEST will credit and use your story in their next inflight magazine ad (and likely their catalog & website as well)

2nd prize – SCOTTEVEST Carry-On Coat (and they will likely use your story in their catalog & website as well)
In addition, the top two entrants will be considered/interviewed for a No Baggage Challenge to make their “no baggage” story a reality

Other ways to WIN:

Tweet your entry and include @scottevest;  Scott’s favorite tweet will win a $150 SeV Gift Certificate

Post your entry on SCOTTEVEST’s Facebook Fan Page ; Scott’s favorite post will win $150 SeV Gift Certificate

Fine Print:

All entries MUST be posted into the comments on Gear Diary (below)

If you make a suggestion or submission (text or video), SCOTTEVEST will have the right to use this submission in future advertising, testimonials, etc. without compensation (other than the prizes to the winners)

Please keep in mind this is a family site, so let’s keep this very clean.

The winner will be announced on Monday, October 25, 2010.

SCOTTEVEST reserves the right to clarify the rules as needed.

Factors that will influence the winning entry:

• creativity and originality

• pithiness, i.e., short and clever catch phrases that are easily incorporated into our ad

• amount of views, ratings, comments, etc. that your specific entry may receive. So, please forward your entry to all your friends and ask them to rate/comment, etc.

The Background on the Story

We brought some clarity to the ongoing battle between Scott Jordan, founder and CEO of SCOTTEVEST (SeV), and Delta Sky Magazine. From our review of all the facts, it all came down to one fairly simple question: Do SCOTTEVEST products actually help passengers save on baggage fees, and if so, how? In sum, Delta says they don’t and can’t. Scott says they do and can.

We want to take Delta at their word when they claimed unequivocally that their motive for rejecting Scott’s ad had nothing to do with protecting revenues from luggage fees.

gear diary Tech Clothing Contests & Giveaways Gear Diary/SCOTTEVEST Carry On Contest: What’s In Your SCOTTEVEST?

The LA Times reported that Delta rejected the ad because it “misleadingly suggested that passengers who stuff their belongings in the[ir] pockets don’t have to check bags.”

Scott’s not saying that you don’t have to check bags. Scott’s point is simply this: You’re only allowed one carry-on and a personal item. (Per Delta’s official, published carry-on policy, a jacket “does not count a personal item”. If you can’t fit everything you need into that one carry-on/personal item, you have to check a bag for the rest of your stuff. That checked bag costs on average about $25 per flight, or $50 per trip. By using a SCOTTEVEST to store those extra items, you MAY not need to check a bag. It’s that simple.

A passenger can travel light by using a SCOTTEVEST instead of a checked bag and/or carry-on, or they can supplement their carry-on with the extra carrying capacity afforded by a SCOTTEVEST. Bottom line: Scott’s products can hold a ton of stuff that you would otherwise need to put in a bag. Carrying more than one bag? Is your carry-on bigger than regulation size? Congratulations, now you have to check something… and pay for the privilege. When you get to your destination, unload your SCOTTEVEST and store your stuff.

SeV’s ability to save passengers from extra baggage fees is a fact that has been reported by some of the most respected media sources in the world, including the New York Times, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Peter Greenberg on the Today Show, just to name a few. Moreover, it was documented in a six-week around-the-world “No Baggage Challenge” chronicled by noted travel writer Rolf Potts using only SCOTTEVEST clothing and no baggage.

I asked Scott how he came up with the name of the campaign, “Scottevest Carry-On Contest”. Scott’s answer…

“Simple. We want to move past the back and forth with Delta and “Carry On” with the business of the day. In fact, we’re so committed to doing this that we are even including a free ticket on Delta. They wouldn’t take my ad but I’m helping to support them. At the same time, I want to educate Delta and the flying public on a legitimate way to save money and look great doing it. That and the fact that just as this controversy was starting our most pocketed Carry-On additional/replacement was just being announced. So the name… it just worked. All that, and I’m a sucker for a good double entendre, as those who know me can attest. gear diary Tech Clothing Contests & Giveaways Gear Diary/SCOTTEVEST Carry On Contest: What’s In Your SCOTTEVEST?

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. Cool daughter gets to live in cool places for cool internships. I, un-cool Mom, pay the bills. Daughter packs bags and boxes to carry and ship. Sometimes I visit her at those cool places. I only need a carry-on. Then I hear, “Mom? I forgot …Can you bring? Cool, Mom!” Thank goodness I have my SCOTTEVEST! Her forgotten stuff is in the carry-on. My stuff is in my pockets! Hey, I’m cool?! I’m smiling. No extra charges! No checked luggage! And SCOTTEVEST has made me COOL! COOL! Oh, by the way -That’s how SCOTTEVEST can save on baggage fees.

In 1965 I was in the Peace Corps and headed to India for two years. Playboy magazines were routinely censored by Indian customs–if they found them in personal luggage. As a young man of 22, I planned to take a selection of my favorite magazines with me, perhaps as trade items, if not for personal pleasure. To that end, I bought a new overcoat and had six overlapping 9X12 pockets sewn in. This handily passed through customs stuffed with Playboys despite the fact that it was 125 degrees in the middle of the night in New Delhi airport.

Times have changed, but there are still plenty of places where Playboy is not welcomed, among many other items of personal use that you can now stuff into a ready-made SCOTTEVEST Carry-On Coat that would otherwise weigh down your baggage and likely be subject to customs fees and/or confiscation. In addition, that’s how SCOTTEVEST can save on baggage fees.

I fly in and out of the city as a consultant all the time, and I have a bag that fits just under the carry-on limit, but on extended client-side consultations, that just doesn’t cut it for all the stuff I need to stay fresh and stay sane, and it takes too much time to fold everything and roll everything just perfectly enough to cram it in there. I wear my suit on board, so I can’t just stuff random things into my pockets, pants and shirt either. I need the SeV carry-on coat to carry all the extra stuff, and get me through TSA checkpoints quick. That’s how SCOTTEVEST can save on time! That’s how SCOTTEVEST can save on baggage fees!

It may not always save me on baggage fees since I usually pack light, but thanks to my Scottevest I can carry on an entire lunch and don’t end up paying $6 for a bag of old, stale M&M’s.

I’m a mom. And a pack mule. Wherever I go, I’m obliged to lug diapers, wipes, snacks, sippy cups, more snacks, toys, pacifiers and whatever clean outfits I manage to scrounge up. Sure, I could stuff it all in a suitcase and drag it behind me, but these hands are full enough with a bouncing — OK, often flailing– baby boy.

What a relief to have SCOTTEVEST. When that blowout diaper or meltdown strikes, I don’t have to rummage through a messy pile of luggage looking for relief supplies. Sanity is just a zipper away! Everything neatly organized and easily accessible. And instead of forking over my money on extra airline fees, I’ll be the mom over in the corner, sipping my latte and using that extra cash to line up tonight’s babysitter.

That’s how SCOTTEVEST can save on baggage fees! (And make me a very happy mom!)

My 2 yr old is about to travel with me to South Africa. Having flown with him to Hawaii, Florida, and Arizona I know firsthand how much “gear” is required for little ones! I’ve tried every combination of carryon vs checking… and don’t forget the fun of lugging the car seat through multiple layovers! On top of that, a diaper bag, a toy bag, room for snacks and diapers… there is no way to take something for yourself too! For this upcoming 24hr travel, I’m going to need some items for me as well as easy access for his essential items while rushing from one gate to another. I love there is enough space to stash some extra clothes for my tot who is guaranteed to go through a couple outfits inflight! “That’s how SCOTTEVEST can save on baggage fees!”

How do I Love thee? Let me count the ways
I love thy depth and breadth and height
My jacket can keep things out of sight
For thy being and ideal grace
I love thee to the level of use everyday
Meet every need, by car or flight
I love the no fee flight as is everyone’s right

    and I say to you
“Whatever your need, there is a jacket for that”

Things that I carry on a regular basis in my jacket
    1. Pens
    2. iPod Touch
    3. Blackberry Curve
    4. Canon powershot camera
    5. Wallet
    6. Pocket notebook
    7. Newspapers

Things that get added on when I am taking flight
    8. Travel documents
    9. Prescription glasses
    10. Sunglasses
    11. iGo charger with cables
    12. Eye cover
    13. Ear buds
    14. Noise canceling Headphones (over the ear type).
    15. Keys (car + house)
    16. Work ID card
    17. Empty water bottle
    18. If staying over – Five fingers footwear
    19. Medicines + Eye drops
    20. Mini First Aid kit

    Advantages of the jacket

For a day flight i.e. fly out and back on the same day, no need to empty out all the pockets. The only thing that remains in the pocket is my driver’s license. So it is a breeze to walk through security

For an overnight or short flight i.e. one to two nights stay, you can really carry a lot of stuff and don’t have to check in any baggage.

For longer trips, you can carry all the things that you cannot live without with you. Obviously you will need to check in (3oz packages don’t last long and it is easier to just carry your full toiletries). However, even if your bag does not come along with you, you can survive for a day or two. (I would carry some underwear, clothing etc in the jacket or my carry on for sure). Also I could get away with one checked bag instead of two.

What could I do with the money I save – buy more souvenirs, go to better restaurants wherever I am visiting or save up to buy my wife something nice.

Note: I will only save money on personal trips as work trips are paid by the company. So it is possible that I might even take more flights.

  • naw1423

I have a ScotteVest I use on a daily basis, but for flights I change up my gear to cut costs, and I carry a laptop, wireless mouse (in case of baggage loss), the sleeves to my Evolution Jacket, my iPod touch, an Amazon Kindle, headphones (wired into the jacket), glasses, a flashlight, batteries, a digital camera, pens, a flash drive, an original Nintendo DS, and several games. Carrying these in my ScotteVest allows me to save room in the one free carry-on for clothes, medicine, a retainer, and other traveling essentials I do not want to risk being lost by the airlines. I save the extra money I would spend on fees for expensive items I could not otherwise afford. That’s how SCOTTEVEST can save on baggage fees!

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine packing for your next weekend getaway. Can you see all those bags piled up on your bed? Now, open your eyes. Wait a minute, where did all my bags go and why is there a coat laying on my bed? That is the new SCOTTEVEST Carry-On Coat and it is the only travel necessity you need. Pocket for your toiletries, check. Pocket for a couple changes of clothes, check. Pocket for your iPad, iPhone, and digital camera, check, check and check. Since I am blind, I unfortunately cannot bask in the beauty of the new Carry-On Coat but that will not stop me from filling every pocket on my next trip. Pocket for extra dog food for my Seeing Eye Dog, Gunner, check. Pocket for his collapsible water bowl, check. Pocket for his bone, chew toy, and favorite stuffed animal, check, check, and check. To be honest, I am pretty sure I could fit Gunner in one of the pockets.

So, on my next weekend trip, I can leave all my bags at home and have everything with me with my new SCOTTEVEST Carry-On Coat. That’s how SCOTTEVEST can save on baggage fees!

I once was a lonely virgin traveler
    Heavy hard-sided suitcases numbered two.
    Not a successful trail ambler,
Irish nuns helped, bags all tumbling askew .
    Honeymooning, smarter, only one case.
    Purse, coat, carry-on bags.
No arms free for loving embrace,
    Straps, handles, check-in snags!
Then children and bags for the diapers
    Stuff needed by everyone going.
“Extra charge!” cried those airline vipers.
More fees they were eagerly bestowing!
Now my many-pocket Carry-on-Coat made by Scott
Makes my “single again” travel filled with ease.
Checking , carrying, extra cost –NOT!
That’s how SCOTTEVEST can save on baggage fees!

My family always said I was kinda simple. And, there was that time I melted the bottoms of my shoes off in the campfire…but despite my lack of attention at times, I still say that I’m pretty practical the rest of the time. And, as simple as I may be, I can certainly see the beauty of traveling with a Scottevest. I mean, travel shouldn’t be about hassle, right? When I am ready to go, it’s because I am ready to leave it all behind. Scottevest makes it simple to leave it all behind. I load up my toiletries, my makeup, my smartphone. Emergency cash, credit card and passport go in. I add in a scarf and a skirt for a night out. I walk out of the house, walk into the airport and it’s all behind me at this point. I am a simple, (yet resourceful) woman. I look forward to what awaits. I know that the extra money I would spend to check bags is better spent on drinks for my new-found friends on the road. My acquaintances and my experiences make my trips…certainly not the time or money I would spend to carry that extra baggage! I wish more things in life were as simple as me and traveling with my Scottevest! Yep, more things in life should be this simple.

What’s in my Scottevest? Just the basics. Everything else is waiting for me on the road.
