Music Diary Review: Pat Metheny Orchestrion Live!

Posted on 22 October 2010

Image courtesy Hans Speekenbrink via AllAboutJazz.com Last night I took my family to see Pat Metheny and his Orchestrion live at the Anderson Performing Arts center in Binghamton, NY. Early this year I noted the introduction to the technology here and reviewed the CD here. When the concert tour was first announced, I was unsurprised that the nearest spots would be about four hours away from me (one thing I really miss about the Boston area!) So when a follow-up set of dates was announced in May that would bring Metheny within an hour … I grabbed tickets right away and wound up 4th row, dead center! The concert was amazing, but… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: ListMonger for iPhone

Posted on 22 October 2010

I recently received an email from Paul at Inspiretis, an iPhone app developer.  Having seen one of my reviews in which I confessed my obsession with list making, Paul offered to send me a review copy of his new iPhone app, ListMonger. I downloaded the app and I’ve been playing with it for about a month.  To be frank, I really like ListMonger.  It packs a bunch of features into a few basic, easy to use screens.  Among the features are: Nested lists – and not just at one level. I only tried it for three levels (a list with a list with a list), but it just seemed to keep Continue reading on Gear Diary …

You Have The Nuclear Launch Codes Right? No, I Thought You Had Them …

Posted on 22 October 2010

This strikes me as one of the more frightening lapses in security that I can recall reading about. Most of us are familiar with what is known as the President’s “football.”  This briefcase contains the instructions that the President would need to utilize in the event of a nuclear war.  It’s often portrayed in cold war movies, handcuffed to some military liaison dressed in uniform. While some of the information surrounding the “football” may be false, what isn’t is the fact that the sitting President needs a certain set of codes in order to access it, a passcode for the lock, if you will.  In a new book General Hugh Shelton, a former chairman of Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Coming Soon: Motorola Defy, the World’s First “LifeProof” Smartphone

Posted on 21 October 2010

Image courtesy of Motorola Anyone who owns a Smartphone has to deal with the high maintenance that goes along with keeping it bright and shiny. I can’t even own a phone anymore that doesn’t have a screen protector and a case on it before it even leaves the store. I have to admit that a lot of the newer smartphones are built on the mediocre level. I love my Samsung Vibrant but would be first in line to trade the thin plastic housing in for something more durable and heavier. Most new phones still aren’t that bad, but often fall short of surviving the wear and tear of the normal everyday consumer. Face… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Gear Accessory Review: IsoToner’s smartTouch Gloves

Posted on 21 October 2010

It has been getting cold here in the northeast. This morning was quite chilly and it’s only going to get worse. That means jackets, hats and – of course – gloves. And that is a problem if you’re one of the growing number of people who use the touchscreen device. You see, capacitive touch screens need some sort of resistance to register taps, slides and other kinds of input. Fingertips work great… gloves do not. .Yes, sadly gloves and iPhones don’t mix well. There are a number of solutions were just out there. You can opt to use a stylus so that you don’t have to worry about a glove (or cold finger)  getting in… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Rounding Up the Earliest Windows Phone 7 Reviews

Posted on 21 October 2010

The earliest devices were seeded to select reviewers a few weeks ago, and yesterday evening the Windows Phone 7 reviews began appearing; there are features to each new Windows Phone 7 device that I find compelling, and I’ll admit that my curiosity is running wild! I’ve put together a review roundup of reviews, choice quotes and videos for you to enjoy, but you’ll want to click through to the original sites for their full stories. I am considering using my extra AT&T voice line to upgrade into one of the new Windows Phone 7 devices, perhaps the HTC Surround, but probably the Samsung Focus. My other option is getting a T-Mobile line so… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

iPhone 4 Accessory Review: Bumper Holster

Posted on 21 October 2010

iPhone protection is a bit of a double-edged sword for me. Everyone knows I’ve got a bit of an obsession with cases, but truth be told I like my iPhone best naked. Since I often carry my phone in my pants pocket keeping it as slim as possible is important. It is for this reason that I have been using a bumper style case in conjunction with a back skin more than any other combo. I had been looking for a better way to carry the phone (pants pockets just get to crowded with other stuff) when I came across this holster from HandHelditems over on the Mac Rumors forums. At only $10… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Gear Games News: Angry Birds Clocks 2 Million Android Downloads, iOS Gets Halloween Version!

Posted on 21 October 2010

Here at Gear Diary, it seems like when we’re not playing Plants vs. Zombies, we’re playing Angry Birds! The addictive casual game from Rovio landed on Android last week as an ad-supported free download. We knew that loads of people were downloading the game, but as Rovio tweeted, they hit 2 million downloads in 3 days: Another day, another million. Passed 2 million downloads on Android. That is a great success and well deserved! I have complained about the state of gaming on Android, and while I still find the experience lacking on my Droid even compared to my first-gen iPod Touch, it is definitely a step in the right direction! Also, Rovio has… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

PDair Releases Their New Droid 2 Cases

Posted on 21 October 2010

Now that I have had my Droid 2 for a while, I am starting to grow a little dissatisfied with the case I picked up with it at Verizon.  Thankfully, PDair has brought out some new Droid 2 cases. One of my favorite cases on my old G1 was a Metal Case; the Droid 2 Metal Case looks just as good as the G1′s case. They also have several different leather cases for… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
