Earlier this week Evernote for Android got a significant bump up to version two of the app. It brought many features up to par with the iPhone app and, in some cases, pushed the Android app past it. Not surprisingly Evernote’s iOS app just got updated too. Since the ap is universal it will work on iPhones, iPod touchs and iPads. Since I am running 4.2 Gold Master on my iPad and iPod touch I have already gotten to play with some of the new features and I have to say I am impressed. Here’s Evernote’s summary of the new features… Update: Evernote for iPhone, iPad and iPod Today, Apple approved Continue reading on Gear Diary …

This was no particular surprise to me, but the newly released game Call of Duty Black Ops set new records, generating more than $360 million in sales during its first 24 hours of availability, making it the NEW ‘biggest entertainment launch ever’. Activision Blizzard Inc. sold 5.6 million units the day “Call of Duty” went on sale, according to the company. Its predecessor, “Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2,” sold 4.7 million copies in 24 hours to reap $310 million on its first day of sale last year. Within a week, it made $550 million. “Not too many years back it would have been unfathomable that the biggest entertainment launch would be a video game Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Want still more proof that ebooks are here to stay? Now they’ve been given the nod of approval from the Grey Lady herself! Yes, the New York Times has caved and will be listing ebook bestsellers alongside hardcover and paperback lists. They’ll be pulling data from retailers and independent sources, so it won’t be dependent on Amazon or B&N driving the majority of the numbers. In addition to the obvious nod to ebook popularity, this has another interesting corollary effect. No one knows for sure quite what ebook marketshare looks like, but it’s a strong assumption that Amazon leads the pack. Amazon is also the most aggressive retailer about striking exclusive deals. It may take some legwork and… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Yesterday was Veteran’s Day across the US, and everywhere you went there were special events, giveaways, speeches, and so on to commemorate the event. And that is a very good thing – I remember well the era when individual soldiers were lumped with politicians and others in terms of getting blamed for Vietnam and everything else that was wrong with the country throughout the 1970′s. And while I have significant concerns about many of the restrictions to our freedoms and ability to dissent in our post-9/11 reality, I think it is a wonderful change for the good in our country that regardless of how anyone feels about the wars we are involved with or actions… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Not too long ago, Wired wrote an article in which the author opined that the Web was on the outs, because individual apps (for Android, for iOS, for Windows) were taking over a lot of Web functionality. Why go to the Bank of America site on the Web, rather than just open the BofA bank app on your iPhone? Me, I’m not so sure. I mean, how many apps do you really want to juggle? Sometimes, it’s a lot easier to go to a web site with my iPad than trying to find one out of many apps on my iPhone, you know? And besides, while this probably won’t be true forever, I definitely find… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

There aren’t many materials that are more long-lasting, beautiful or more protective than thick, full grain leather; Saddleback Leather Company is one of the few companies who takes advantage of that fact. I recently received their iPad Sleeve / Large Gadget Pouch, and have since had a chance to put it under the microscope (figuratively, of course). Opening the sleeve, I was immediately impressed by its lovely appearance and the smell of its thick leather. The sleeve measures 8 ¾” wide x 10 3/8″tall when lying flat, but according to Saddleback, you “can fit a large grapefruit inside.” The even, double row stitching (done with industrial grade marine thread) is… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I know this is going to come as a shock to those of who you frequent the site but… I love SCOTTEVEST clothing. I wear one of their jackets pretty much every day, I love my SeV hoodie and, recently, I got some of their Q-Zip and performance t-shirts which I pretty much live in when I’m not in a suit. So it should be no huge surprise that I was intrigued when they pulled the curtain back on their latest product- the SeV Travel Boxers. Well, I’m not a boxer kinda guy (yeah, yeah… TMI…) but these just might change that. The come in two colors, black and gray. I received… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

One reason people tell me they do not choose to use an iPhone is that they would rather have a phone with a hardware keyboard. Apple, among other companies, have produced Bluetooth keyboards that can be used with iPhones and iPads, but they are almost all full-sized offerings. EFO Gadget Shop recently sent me the iPazzPort Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard to review with my IOS devices. Lets take a look. The iPazzPort is a Mini Bluetooth wireless keyboard for iPad, iPhone and a host of smartphones including Windows Mobile and Nokia operating systems. Unfortunately Android is not… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

When the 4th generation iPod touch came out I broke one of my cardinal rules… I began using it before a case was released for it. I NEVER do that. Ever. Keeping my iDevices pristine is too important for me and the shiny metal back of the touch scratches far too easily. Unfortunately cases for the new iPod touch were a few weeks off. I immediately began using my touch and… as expected… within a few days the back was a bit scratched up. It is too late for me to keep my touch in perfect shape but if you are just getting one for yourself Speck now has some great choices. Larry has already taken… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Video: Apigee Shows How To Use The API Console to Add FourSquare Check-Ins to Your Own Application We’ve covered Apigee before. They make it easy to integrate application programming interfaces, or APIs, into your own application. So, what does that mean? If you want to create your own application that can take advantage of FourSquare location-based check-ins, integrate PayPal for payments, or take advantage of Twillio for SMS and Voice applications, Apigee gives you that power. Oh, and don’t forget their previous APIs that let you easily implement Facebook and Twitter into your apps. Before you would have to code hundreds of lines of code while sitting in your parent’s Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I am not sure what I would file this email I got today under … corporate hubris? Trying to cash in on a decade old saying? Misguided legalistic idiocy? I’m just really not sure – please help me out in the comments! Anyway, today we get word that Nintendo has filed a trademark claim on a phrase they didn’t make up, didn’t attempt to control, and have let enter the popular lexicon for nearly two decades … because it uses one of their trademarked properties. Here is the email I got this morning: Nintendo Files Official Trademark for Catchphrase ‘It’s On Like Donkey Kong’ In honor of the upcoming Nov. 21 launch of Continue reading on Gear Diary …

My son Joseph, who is 12, is going through a phase: he likes black, devils, skulls, and anything else of the ilk that he calls (but I don’t think is actually what other people mean by) Goth. It has become such a well-known trait that, last year, when he needed eye glasses, one teacher remarked, “Well, if you could find a pair with skulls on them, I bet he’d wear them, then!” And he would So now along comes USBFever to tempt Joseph with one of their new releases this week: a Skull print leather back cover for the iPhone 4. As if Joseph didn’t need enough reasons to bug me about getting him an… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
