For reasons that I’d rather not get into, we have to visit our neurologist a couple/three times a year. We found this neurologist in around 2003/2004, and he had a Motion tablet system installed throughout his office. I was mightily impressed with this, being a nerd with a long interest in the UMPC/tablet world, and this being before even the iPhone had come out. Way to have some forward thinking, Dr. Ghodsi! I always thought that the medical world was a huge potential market for tablets (along with the educational market), and so was surprised to not see more folks jump into it. But now, GammaTech is doing so, with a “military-grade rugged design” tablet… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Do you like to use your iPad in its out of the box, naked form factor? Or do you choose to protect your Apple tablet with something as slim as just a full body skin? Even if you answered yes to either of those questions you probably still want some sort of case to protect your device while transporting it though. The ingear Slim Nylon case for the iPad is just about the slimmest, sleekest, case I’ve seen. The Slim Nylon Case includes a screen protector and installation card. A rare but very welcomed addition with iPad cases. This horizontal… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

What happens when a NOOK, an iPad and a Droid meet and have a three-way lovechild? NOOKcolor! Luckily for us (and all of you!), B&N has sent Gear Diary a NOOKcolor to review. Read on for my first impressions of this color eBook reader! My first thought when I opened the shipping box was, “Wow. B&N really took presentation seriously.” The NOOKcolor comes in a sturdy well designed box, but instead of opening from the top or front it opens from the bottom with a neat magnetic closure. Instead of being something you might open and toss away, it makes it something you want to hang on to, it’s that well built. The NOOKcolor is suspended… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

In the North East, during winter, using our touchscreen enabled devices outside becomes difficult. No, not because the screens don’t function well in cold temperatures. Because we are often times wearing gloves! Imagine the situation. Your iPhone is buried deep in your pocket. A call comes in. You fumble for your phone and try to “slide to unlock” with your gloved hand but the screen doesn’t recognize your finger’s movement. Sure you could take your glove off but do you really want to do that when it’s 20 degrees out? There’s got to be a better way right? We’ve all seen gloves that claim to be touch screen compatible. We’ve even reviewed a few pairs… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Since the second game in the series, Treyarch and Infinity Ward have alternated development duties for Call of Duty games: Infinity Ward did the excellent first two games as well as Modern Warfare 1 & 2. One of the best things about running is the simplicity. Get up, tie your shoes and go! That works when it’s summertime, but lately it seems I need to load down with more and more gear just to get out the door. Shoes, running tights, long sleeved shirt, jacket, wool hat, gloves…and since I run early in the mornings, a headlamp too. I’ve been testing a new piece of gear for my runs, one that combines warmth AND safety…but how well does the Bright Night StrideLight Lighted Jacket hold up against my runs? Read on to find out! My first impression of the jacket was… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Electric Pocket seems to be on an updating roll. Earlier this week, Doug posted about the new universal version of Electric Pocket’s BugMe! app for iPhone and iPad. Now, it seems that another one of their iOS apps, Nag, has also received an update. A few weeks back I did a quick review of Nag and liked it for its simplicity. Now, Nag has been updated to include a feature that adds a new customization option. With the update, users can now change the alarm message and add text to remind you specifically why you’re being nagged. Nice! You can get Nag here in… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Image via Yahoo Sports Being a firefighter this story hit close to home when I read it. I’ve seen the various iOS applications available via the App Store dealing with first aid, cpr and other emergency situations and often wondered how many people are actually using them in the real world. Turns out a basketball coach in California is and one of his players owes his coach and one of the apps his life. “According to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and the Los Angeles Times, an iPhone helped teach La Verne basketball coach Eric Cooper how to perform CPR when he downloaded a life saving app called “Phone Aid” one night last week.”… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Buck fifty a day. According to the automaker, that is all it will cost you to operate your new Chevy Volt Extended Range Electric Vehicle when used in EV mode only. The car that GM is calling the “game-changer” is arriving in select markets this month. We spent some quality time with the Volt and its team members on a recent jaunt in the Texas Hill Country north and west of Austin. The event provided a few eye openers, some educational opportunities and at least one typical situation faced by drivers in semi-rural areas. Much has been written about Volt over the past few years. I remember talking to engineers at the big auto show… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
