OK, I’ll calm down now…. but really, just head on over and buy it now. As I noted when this great game dropped to $4.99 on a one-day 50% off sale, this is one of the best iPad games of 2010. In my review of the PC game I said: World of Goo is an amazing confluence of simple things done extremely well with excellent results. There is a unified set of elements – graphics, story, music, sounds, gameplay, and goo to hold it all together. Just as Portal wowed everyone last year with simple gameplay that really worked, this year World of Goo is the game to Continue reading on Gear Diary …

NAVIGON have proudly announced that their MobileNavigator app is now on the screens over 2 million iOS and Android devices, and to celebrate are offering all their apps for half-price. Having used the NAVIGON app on my iPhone 3G and iPhone 4, it’s easily one of the best on the market, with lane guidance, spoken street names and a simple route options screen to take you where you want to go, the way you want to go. Integrated Google search makes finding POIs a cinch, and the 3D mapping display is clear and easy to follow. Be quick though, as the sale is only for 4 days! Pricing available in the press release… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

One of the great trends of the ever-more powerful smartphones based on Android and iOS is that we are getting better and better games, such as the stunning Dead Space for iPad. Many games are ports of existing games, which isn’t a bad thing. Games like Plants vs. Zombies, Tradewinds and others are loads of fun. Then there is Spectral Souls … now available for Android to anyone foolish enough to pay $15 for this steaming turd-pile. The game was released back in 2006 for the PSP and got properly hammered in reviews. In my review for a now defunct site, I rated it as a 2.5 out of 5, and… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I began this post as an opinion post but have decided to instead simply share my conversation with a representative from AT&T Mobile. By way of I production let me share a bit of background. My house gets next to no connectivity with AT&T. My wife’s Blackberry is a bit better than my iPhone but both leave much to be desired. At times the connectivity is passable but at other times it is non-existent. We have stayed with AT&T for a host of reasons, not the least of which has been the iPhone for the past few years. With the iPhone on Verizon, and my growing interest in both Android and Windows Phone 7 I… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I carry my iPad pretty much every day but there are times when it is replaced by the 11″ MacBook Air I got just before vacation last December. I love the 11″ Air and continue to be impressed by the ease of use, speed and over-all utility of the diminutive Mac. Truth is, so long as you up the RAM to 4GB it can easily serve as the ONLY computer for most people. I know Elana isn’t having any second thoughts about replacing her iMac with an 11″ Air. That leaves on key question- since the 11″ Air is specifically designed… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Yes, today is the day. Today is the day that anyone can order a Verizon iPhone and I have no doubt the numbers will be huge. At the same time, the iPhone isn’t the only powerhouse phone on the Verizon network and today’s Gear Deal brings us one of the other contenders, the Droid X by Motorola. The Droid X features a large 4.3′ display (I’m using and reviewing a phone with a similar display right now and I LOVE the huge screen!), has an advanced 8MP Camera With Dual Flash and sports HDMI Output. With a 1 GHz Processor the phone is fast and since it is flash-capable the whole net is available on it… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I’m not a Catholic, however I can’t help but be fascinated by the church’s ~2000 year history. I’ve even attended a midnight mass or two on Christmas Eve with friends over the years, and I’ve got to tell you — for sheer pageantry, tradition and eye-candy, it is hard to beat a Roman Catholic service performed in a beautifully decorated cathedral complete with full portions spoken or sung in Latin; it’s really impressive. However there are rites and procedures expected by those practicing Catholicism that I don’t fully understand, and one of them is confession. From what I have observed in movies, confession generally follows this sequence: a congregant will go… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Everyone seems to be freaking out about the recently revealed pricing for the upcoming Motorola XOOM tablet. On the surface that seems silly: the XOOM has a dual-core processor, a 1280×720 10.2 inch touch screen, two cameras (a 5MP rear camera with flash and a 2MP ‘webcam’), as well as the latest Android 3.0 operating system. On paper it seems like the XOOM completely blows away the iPad, but as we have learned with the fictitious Samsung Tab sales numbers, having better specs means little. An article at eWeek lists 10 reasons why the XOOM is overpriced, but there was one that caught my attention: 3. Apple can get away with it, but Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Glitz and glamour are no longer reserved for the Cadillac bunch. Denali packages have been offered on GMC Sierra pickups for years and bring a certain sparkle to the lineup. That sparkle is being spread. The “Professional Grade” division of General Motors has added the top-of-the-line Denali trim package to its Acadia crossover utility vehicle. Acadia is GMC’s larger-than-mid-sized CUV that is made for families who want the capacity of a big ute but not the heft usually associated with frame-based models such as the Yukon. The Acadia is unibody construction, powered by a slightly more fuel-efficient V-6 engine and is offered in front- or all-wheel drive. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I keep professional contacts with loads of folks in different industries all over the country, and after a couple of years of them being divided between ‘I’m happy to still have a job’ and ‘oh crap, I no longer have a job’ … this is the first year folks are starting to discuss raises. Having talked to several people in the last few weeks I have found a few basic themes: there are ~1% companies like Google who are saying ‘we had a great year – here, have some money’. Then there are the companies that are still struggling – which is the majority – and those folks remain happy to have a… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
