USBFever Release o’ the Week

Posted on 22 February 2011

You know, USBFever is not some gigantic shop that cranks out their products like salami in a sausage factory. Despite all the stuff they put out, pretty much every week, they’re actually one of the smaller companies out there doing what they do. So I’m actually never that unhappy to provide you all with a list of what they’ve turned out for the week, because I kinda like supporting them, ya know? This week, as is typical, they’ve put out a whole plethora of stuff, including that And the full list? Glad you asked! GD Quickie: Joby Yogi for iPad- “I Reviewed It and Still Use It”

Posted on 21 February 2011

I spent the morning trying to catch up on phone calls. That meant I didn’t get out of my chair once. At a certain point, however, I got to feeling quite antsy and knew I needed to do something. I haven’t run in quite a while due to an ankle strain but it was feeling better and I NEEDED to run. I also needed some loud music to motivate me. My treadmill has speakers and an iPod dock but it doesn’t get quite loud enough. On the other hand, the speakers I recently attached to an Airport Express for streaming via AirPlay get VERY loud. So I grabbed my iPad, launched RDIO, found an album… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

MWC: One Last Look at Mobile World Congress 2011

Posted on 21 February 2011

Beyond hamming it up with wandering oompah bands at Mobile World Congress, Helena and I managed to  get hands-on time with some of the new devices and technologies that will be causing a stir in 2011 and beyond! HTC’s New Android Devices HTC won me over with their lovely new ChaCha. After using the BlackBerry Bold for a week, with its tiny little keys that I never got used to, the generously sized keys on the ChaCha, along with its softly curved body … I so wish that my Tru SIM had been installed in one of these babies. The Hidden Price of Our Gadget Obsession: Child Labor

Posted on 21 February 2011

One item that came through in Apple’s Supplier report last week was a marked increase in issues with child labor in supplier facilities, particularly in China. The report noted that Apple ” audited 127 facilities and found 91 cases including 31 workers who had been hired prior to reaching the legal age, but were no longer underage or no longer employed at the time of the audit.” Before you get out the Apple-bashing hammer, remember that EVERYONE making devices is using these facilities – Dell, Asus, Acer, HP, even Samsung gets loads of stuff from these plants. This means it is a huge and spreading issue as Chinese companies do whatever they can… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Gear Giveaway- Say “Yes” to Coloud Colors Headphones; Enter Our “Say No To…” Contest

Posted on 21 February 2011

Our friends at ChipChick brought this unusual “No Cellphones” sign to our attention. It makes the point that cell phones are not permitted by actually strapping a confiscated one to the sign itself. In the last two or three years I cannot recall a wedding, funeral or Bar Mitzvah where at least one cell phone did not ring! As a result, I like the idea. As that post notes, “The NO Sign will also work just as effectively for compact digital cameras, cigarettes and candy.” It got me thinking. What OTHER kinds of things could the sign be used with? My Insurance Attendant™ Turns Your Phone into a Digital Wallet

Posted on 21 February 2011

Get lost with all your insurance insanity?  Maybe you young whippersnappers aren’t too worried about it yet, but us old farts sure are–homeowners, fire, flood, earthquake, tornado.  Car insurance.  Health insurance.  Life insurance.  Personal umbrella policies.  Heck, you can insure individual items, like that sweet used Strat you bought at that small, out-of-the-way place down in SoHo that the owner swears was owned by Clapton once.  (You don’t believe it, but it’s still a sweet guitar.)  How the heck do you keep track of all of it? Well, you know there’s an app for it.  If you have an Android device, anyway.  Iconosys‘ My Insurance Attendant is designed to help you keep track of… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

The Aligata iPhone Leather Sleeve Review

Posted on 21 February 2011

Uncomplicated good looks, even contrasting stitching, and leather which will only get more beautiful over time as it is used … these are what you’ll get when you purchase an iPhone leather sleeve from Aligata. Don’t be fooled by the name, though; the iPhone Leather Sleeve will also fit other similarly sized phones and devices. Because he knows how much I like this combination, Tom from Aligata sent me a nude beauty sleeve with yellow stitching. This particular type leather usually comes with white stitching, but for a fee (and a little bit of prior-to-ordering discussion) you can specify other thread colors. There are also four other types of leather… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

GD Quickie: Scottevest and Tourism

Posted on 21 February 2011

Sarah and I met up with a friend this weekend and decided to be silly tourists and check out Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Both of us had been there when we were kids, but never as adults. The whole trip was fun, but in our post-9/11 world we encountered a great deal of security. There were airport-style security screenings at the ferry we took, and the Statue of Liberty had even more security. Our friend couldn’t bring his backpack into the statue and had to rent a locker for $2.00, before going through yet another x-ray and metal detector setup. I, on the other hand, was wearing my Scottevest G02 jacket, and… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

KONAMI Unveils Facebook Support for Gamers

Posted on 21 February 2011

You’re playing a game, right?  Having a good time, leveling up, doing well, when bang-o!  You run into a problem.  It’s a bug, or you’re caught in some bizarre infinite loop, or you simply can’t figure out how the heck to get past that #$(*&%!! mini-boss on level 17.  Whatever.  What do you do? Well, you could try to contact support for that game, or that game’s manufacturer.  If you don’t mind bad hold music and waiting until your ear has turned into a big bruise, sure, that’ll work.  Or you could try surfing the web, googling for the info.  Sometimes that works.  If you don’t mind sifting through 32,720 or so hits, not to… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

USBFever Offers an Apple Dock to Mini USB 5 pin Adapter

Posted on 21 February 2011

I don’t know about you, but I run out of USB ports on my laptop all the time.  And I do mean all the time.  I bought a powered, 1-6 dock converter for my Lenovo, but I still run out of room.  It’s maddening, honestly.  Wouldn’t it be nice if you could plug in to one of the many other jacks on your laptop?  I mean, Apple can’t possibly be using all those pins on their dock connectors, can they? The answer is, “No”.  And USBFever has a helpful suggestion for you:  buy a converter from them.  USBFever’s new Apple Dock to Mini-USB converter is just the thing to help you when you’ve run out… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
