Gear Diary Rave: Gomadic

Posted on 22 March 2011

I’ve been a fan of Gomadic chargers for several years. Like many of the other Gear Diary writers, I like to switch devices frequently, but replacing desk chargers, car chargers, sync cables, etc., for each gadget gets to be pretty expensive pretty quickly. With Gomadic’s “tip exchange” technology, you keep the same charging cable, but change the tip at the end where it connects to the device.  Here’s how they describe their products: Don’t lug around cords for all of your devices. Buy one Gomadic cable, from retractable USBs to double car chargers and you’re set for years. Simply buy a new tip with each new device or upgrade and you’re ready to roll Continue reading on Gear Diary …

GD Video Quickie: Sampling the YouTube Way

Posted on 22 March 2011

Here’s an amazing example of what you can do it you scour YouTube, have some decent video editing skills and a lot of time. This video was made entirely of YouTube videos that Ophir Kutiel, aka ‘Kutiman’, found on the net. He took a little of this and a little of that and, in the end, created what you see below — a FrankenVideo. It is pretty amazing and worth a couple of minutes. Gear Games Deal: Take-No-Prisoners Strategy Pack – 20 *Full* Games for $9.99!

Posted on 22 March 2011

Back in the fall of 2007 I bought the CD version of the ‘Special Edition’ of Gods: Land of Infinity for $20 – and thought it was a great deal! It recently went on sale through Strategy First and I grabbed the digital version, paying ~$5. It was an instant buy for me because I had never seen it below $15, and even now lists at that price or higher everywhere, with occasional $9.99 sales. But now Strategy First has the full Gods: Land of Infinity for $9.99 … oh wait, they are throwing in 19 other full games as well! They call it the “Take-No-Prisoners Strategy Pack”. I… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Random Cool Infographic: Concensus Cloud on Books Everyone Should Read

Posted on 22 March 2011

I love infographics of all sorts – they represent such a great assortment of VDI (visual displays of information) that I just gobble them up whenever I can! This latest cool one from the Guardian.uk pulled books from more than 15 high profile book lists in recent years. According to the author: Do Top 100 Books polls and charts agree on a set of classics? I scraped the results of over 15 notable book polls, readers surveys and top 100′s. Both popular and high-brow. They included all Pulitzer Prize winners, Desert Island Discs choices from recent years, Oprah’s Bookclub list, and, of course, The Guardian’s Top 100 Books of All Time. A simple frequency Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Gear Games Quickie: Hey EA – Fool Me Once, Shame on Me, Fool Me Twice …

Posted on 21 March 2011

> Last week I wrote about a gamer who was banned from access to his EA game account based on a forum ban. In the comments Glitch pointed to an ArsTechnica article which discussed the same issue and offered this addendum: “Update: We just received word from EA’s Andrew Wong that the situation was actually an error. “Unfortunately, there was an error in the system that accidentally suspended a user’s entire account,” he told Ars. “Immediately upon learning of the glitch, EA took steps to restore the user’s macro account and apologized for the inconvenience.” Well, at the time I speculated that the… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

GD Quickie: Going Bananas for Banana TV

Posted on 21 March 2011

Apple’s AirPlay is getting a lot of use in our home these days. I have a number of Airport Express units around the house and each is attached to a set of speakers. With them I can now start music playing anywhere I want from any iOS device by simply starting the music and selecting that room’s AirPort Express from the AirPlay menu. It is simple, it is quick and it makes great use of our WiFi network. That’s why I jumped at the chance to buy the new program, Banana TV. What is Banana TV, and why am I nuts errrr Bananas for it? Here’s the description. Banana TV lets you use AirPlay Continue reading on Gear Diary …

New Report: Technology is Ruining Our Sleep

Posted on 21 March 2011

Image courtesy of Corbis Images According to a new Reuters study “the national penchant for watching television every evening before going to sleep, playing video games late into the night or checking emails and text messages before turning off the lights could be interfering with the nation’s sleep habits.” I know this will come as hilarious irony given my recent take on how obnoxious technology has made us, but this is something I am terrible about. On my bedside table I always have my Alienware laptop, Nintendo DSi, and Sony PSP, and I also generally bring my iPad upstairs with me. Does this sound like you… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Bioware’s Old Republic Trailer Shows Intrigue of Star Wars Still Exists

Posted on 20 March 2011

I have made my disappointment for both Dragon Age 2 and Bioware’s current development direction well known. I have also never been a huge fan of MMORPGs – I like the freemium versions for a while but have never stuck with them long and therefore never cared for subscription models. However, I have always been a big Star Wars fan and mark games from that franchise amongst my all-time faves, so despite my misgivings, I am really excited about the upcoming MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic. At PAX East last week Bioware unveiled a trailer for the game that, well it might not convince me to part ways with $15 a month, but… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
