Gear Games Deal: Avadon for Mac on Sale for $14.95

Posted on 09 April 2011

I recently reviewed Avadon: The Black Fortress, and in pronouncing it one of the best games you’ll play this year, here is some of what I said: Spiderweb took a chance this year – they left behind the established and well-loved worlds of Avernum and Geneforge and set out on a new adventure. Avadon: The Black Fortress is the start of a new franchise, and so far it is looking like we are in for a great series! Now MacGameStore is featuring Avadon for 40% off! This game is a great value at $25, so for just under $15 it is a great deal! Head on over to MacGameStore and Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Some New PDAir Releases to Tickle Your Case-Needing Jones

Posted on 09 April 2011

PDAir makes cases, and no bones about it.  Reasonably-priced, reasonably-solid cases that cover your precious device in the substance of your choice, be it aluminum, leather, or some kind of vinyl something-or-other.  Cases.  PDAir.  That’s what they do. And as you might expect, they haven’t been just sitting around, watching devices get released and saying, “Gee, nice device!”  No, they see a device, and they want to encase that sucker, darn it!  And this week’s encasement list is all about the Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9003 and the Motorola Xoom.  Cases.  For you.  Take a look. Full information below. Leather Case for Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9003 – Flip Type (Black) Leather Case for Continue reading on Gear Diary …

New Gear Daily Laptop Deal: Dell Latitude E5520

Posted on 09 April 2011

Dell Latitude E5520 Friends of mine have an antique Dell computer. Okay, well maybe it is not an antique but it is old enough that it has just one GB of “blazing fast” 677MHz RAM. They were complaining that it was too slow. Shocking! I told them I could up the RAM to 2GB but that was where is maxed out. In response they quickly said, “Find us an equivalent to this one that will be super fast.” The result is today’s New Gear Daily Deal. I wanted to find them a laptop with plenty of power, a 15.6″ screen and huge savings. I did just that. This Dell Latitude E5520 has… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

USBFever Releases o’ the Week

Posted on 08 April 2011

Your list o’ USBFever releases for this week are a wee bit late, and I do apologize.  Sometimes, even though it’s much less diverting and interesting (although it’s not too bad most days!), my day job does take precedence.  (Did have a nice discussion with Carly about eBook publishers, though, which will hopefully be up soon!) But enough about me; you aren’t here to read about me.  I’m boring.  It’s tech you want to see about.  And so, without further ado, here they are, USBFever’s releases for this week: Wide Angle + (Marco) + Fish Eye + 2X + 8X + 12X Telephoto Lens Combo foriPhone 4G 2-in-1 Holster Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: Tekkeon TekCharge MP1860A Dual Port Power Pack

Posted on 08 April 2011

Of all the commercials that Apple has run the one that ticked me off the most involved the iPhone 4 and its battery life. Yes, Apple ran an ad telling us how amazing the battery life of the iPhone 4 is and, while it is BETTER than other phones there really is no smartphone I have used that I would say has “great” battery life. That is the reason I still need to carry an external battery with me wherever I go. There are many out there but the one I am currently carrying comes from Tekkeon and I am rather impressed. The Tekkeon TekCharge lets you charge two devices at once and it brings… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Music Diary Songs of Note: Horace Silver ‘Song for My Father’

Posted on 08 April 2011

Everyone at GearDiary – just like everyone else on the internet – is an actual person, and behind the scenes we share some of the joys and difficulties of making out way through life. Not surprisingly, I often reflect on my own issues in life through music in one way or another. These past couple of weeks my father has been going through some health issues, and while all is doing much better, one song has been in my mind more than most others, the Horace Silver standard ‘Song for My Father’. The song was written as a reflection of Silver taking a trip to Brazil and seeing places… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: Magellan Premium Car Kit and iOS App for iPhone and iPod touch

Posted on 08 April 2011

My iPhone makes a great portable GPS system. This is particularly important because my car does not have a built-in GPS system, and my daily work has me going to a variety of locations with which I am not always familiar. Using the iPhone as a GPS works rather well for the most part. It starts up in GPS mode rather quickly, locks in on satellites fairly efficiently and does quite a good job of holding the signal once it does. There are a few significant shortcomings however. Chief among them is the impact using the GPS on the iPhone has on battery life and the fact that using the iPhone as a GPS at… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Music Diary Notes: Grammy Awards Reconfigured … Result of Major Label Pressure?

Posted on 08 April 2011

Yesterday the Recording Academy announced major changes to the annual Grammy Awards, reducing the number of categories from 109 at the last awards show to 78. For those who think the awards show is already over-long and unfocused, the changes may seem too long in coming. But nothing done will impact the actual show, since most of what is changed isn’t the stuff that makes the Grammy Awards a long and dreadful affair … The image at top shows part of a list that the Recording Academy has for comparing the current list of categories to what will be around for next year. For the full listing head here. The… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
