I saw this in an email from CPSC Recalls this morning, and all I could think of was some random climber hanging upside down when one of these carabiners decided to fail — not a happy thought! So if you’re a climber, check your gear and make sure that you don’t have any recently purchased Photon carabiners or quickdraws in your pack. If you have some, give CAMP USA a toll-free call at (877) 421-2267 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday, or visit their website at www.camp-usa.com. No injuries or deaths have been reported yet, so let’s keep it that way!… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

This is my 13″ MacBook Air. I love it. Especially now that Apple fixed it after my clumsiness a few weeks ago (when I dumped a drink on top of it). With 4 GB of RAM and 256 GB of solid-state storage, the laptop doesn’t feel like a compromise in any way shape or form. It is super-fast, and super quiet. Add in the fact that the 13″ screen has the same resolution as the 15″ MacBook Pro that I was eying a few months ago, and you have what has become, by far, my favorite laptop ever. No, actually, it IS my favorite computer ever. In fact, it is pretty much the only… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Our friends over at AUTUM are back with yet another awesome product. Just to refresh your memory: we first met the company when they announced release of the Strait Jacket sleeve for the iPad. That was followed by Straight Jackets for the 11 and 13″ MacBook Air. We were quite taken with the design, fit and finish of each; Judie and I continue to enjoy using ours on a regular basis. Then the company announced the limited production run of the Heretic sofa. This was the point at which we knew that we liked this company, their aesthetics and their sense of irreverence a lot. After all… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I received my first holster-style cellphone holder/case this morning courtesy WirelessGround.com. Up to this point I had always just slipped my iPhones into my pocket to tote around be it at work, home or play. My phone was always in some type of candy shell or case to minimize scratches and whatnot but was never on my belt. After just 15 minutes with the WirelessGround Apple Shell Holster Combo I am hooked. The rubberized hard case and swivel holster design offer protection while still keeping my iPhone easy to access. The two-piece unit allows for the phone to slide in and out of the holster but locks in, securely stored… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Image courtesy of iheartmovies If you live under a rock and have never seen any Terminator films, then you would have no idea that Tuesday night (4/19) at 8:11 PM Skynet came online and became self-aware. Skynet was a machine designed by our military to take control of our defenses. Giving a the control which According to the Terminator lore today marks the beginning of the end for humanity as we know it. Judgment Day is upon us, and soon the machines will take over the world as we know it. Sarah Connor shows us in T2 what is to become of mankind, which translates pretty much to nuclear holocaust and the end… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I reviewed the Ergotron Sit–Stand Desk last September. This work-station modification allows you to work at your desk in either a sitting or standing position merely by lifting the entire assemblage up or down. It is truly an impressive piece of equipment, and at close to $400 certainly not inexpensive. My review concluded with: So do I like this? YES! If I had not been sent a review unit would I be buying one? YES again. Having the option to work either sitting or standing and to quickly move between the two is great. Having a unit as well-built and stable as this is even better. I am VERY Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Right now Amazon.com is having a great sale on consoles! Here are the details! Microsoft’s XBOX360 had a troubled start – hardware failures abounded, the Wii outsold it, it lost the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray war … and yet as we stand today it is the dominant console for gaming! With the new ‘Slim’ version proving reliable, the popular Kinect accessory and continued game development, the system now is every bit as relevant as ever! Right now Amazon.com is offering the 4GB version for $199.99 with $50 Amazon Credit! Sony’s Playstation 3 might not be the top-selling… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

A little over a year ago I had written how impressed I was with the new Chevy Camaro RS and its new V-6 with a six-speed manual gearbox. Fast forward and GM sends a V-8-laden SS model of almost the exact same color scheme and, well, perhaps my expectations were a bit too high for their “beast.” For me, the new Camaro still wins out were I only judging styling. Slip behind the wheel and my concerns quickly repeat those of my auto press brethren: Limited sightlines, funky steering wheel and a mismatched dash panel. First though, let’s explore… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

One of the best April Fool’s jokes of 2010 was the iCade from ThinkGeek, but it also immediately had people asking ‘when can I BUY it’?!? Well, your question is answered, as ThinkGeek is now selling the iCade for $99! From ThinkGeek: Didn’t think you needed an iPad? Think again! When the iPad was announced, we all crammed into a conference room to watch live and drool over every shiny corner and reflecty icon. After the glow of the initial announcement wore off, many of us came to the conclusion that the iPad was actually pretty useless. “It’s a giant iPhone!” some said. Others exclaimed, “WTF, no Flash!?”. Still, we Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Not my favorite stuff of his … but perhaps that is because the original song is so totally ripped off from superior Madonna material that I find Gaga to come off as a parody or at least an ironic look at the music industry. Naturally, she (or her ‘people’) wouldn’t allow him to do it … so he is releasing it free similar to the (better than the original) ‘You’re Pitiful’ parody of the milquetoast James Blunt snoozer. Anyway – enjoy Weird Al singing ‘Perform this way’! And while we’re on Weird Al and Lady Gaga … what about Polka Face from a live show? Source: Village Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Okay, I admit it, I love saving money when I shop. I especially love saving money on products that are in some way related to something that Apple manufactures. After all, Apple’s products aren’t exactly cheap and the accessories that work with them aren’t either. Any time you can save money on them it is a good thing. That’s where the new site, Order Border, comes into play. It’s a familiar set up if you have used some of the other sites that do special deals, but this one focuses specifically on Apple products. The site will have one deal every day (sometimes more than a day) and the deal will start at a certain price. The price… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Way back in 1986 Sierra Games released Space Quest, a point & click adventure that was critically acclaimed and sold loads of copies (200,000 … massive back then!). So inevitably sequels followed one after the next. In 1987 Space Quest 2 was released – and now 24 years later it has been remade formodern systems and re-released by Infamous Adventures , who initially started out making licensed ports of the old Sierra adventures, and have since been reworking old games and creating their own. Here is a synopsis of the Space Quest II story: As you will recall in our last chapter, Roger had just foiled the Sariens fiendish plot to rule Continue reading on Gear Diary …
