While I regularly write about how the four ‘major’ record labels use their nearly 90% share of the market to control everything and stifle innovation while stuffing about a dozen ready-made Johnny Bravos down our throat, the good news has been that ‘other’ 12% of the market – the indies. Unable or unwilling to work with the majors, these artists have maintained integrity in the pop/rock genres while also using innovative ways to get their music to the audience. The biggest example of this success so far is Arcade Fire winning the Best Album Grammy this year.
Another great indie rock group is Manchester Orchestra. They are a group from Georgia, taking their name from the British town that was home to groups such as The Smiths. Playing what is categorized as ‘alt rock’, and with a sound that inspiration from their namesake town, they have become indie darlings over the last four years since their first album. This May their third album was released, titles Simple Math.
Right now the title song is available for FREE on Amazon.com!
In addition, the entire album is one of the $5 albums featured for the month of July.
Definitely check out the video below for Simple Math. If you like it, grab the song and album – they are one of the better alternative groups playing right now and a great antidote to the pop trash playing on the radio!
