I can’t remember who it was–I honestly think it was someone here on Gear Diary–but when Apple put out their FaceTime app, there was some discussion as to what it would mean to the phone industry.  After all, if you can (essentially) make phone calls for free via your WiFi line, what do you need an AT&T or Sprint or whatever cell phone account for?

Now, I still have no idea what Apple has in mind as far as grabbing communications market share, but the market is absolutely not standing still.  Witness Pinger, the iOS and Android (and Web) texting app.  Today they’re announcing the addition of Voicemail to their product.  So you can text, do voice messaging, and now do voicemail, with an iOS app over a local WiFi network.  Will Pinger have a heap o’ success in grabbing market share?  I dunno; but this is certainly an area to watch moving forward, don’t you think?

You can download Pinger for free via the iTunes app store, or your local Android store.  Check it out.

Pinger, the company disrupting the mobile space by making texting and talking free, today announced that millions of Pinger iOS customers can upgrade to free voicemail with the new Pinger Textfree Voice + VM app. With the inclusion of voicemail in Pinger’s free texting and calling service, consumers no longer need to pay for expensive texting and calling plans.  In addition, everyone can now turn an iPod touch into a fully functioning mobile phone.

“We constantly listen to our customers to enhance our services, and we’re excited to offer their most requested feature—free voicemail,” said Greg Woock, Pinger co-founder and CEO. “The addition of voicemail takes us one step closer to our vision of full-featured, free communications services for everyone.”

Consumers can get Pinger’s free service by downloading Pinger Textfree Voice + VM in the iTunes App Store. In addition to new free voicemail, the app enables anyone to send and receive unlimited text and picture messages, receive unlimited inbound calls, and earn or purchase minutes to make outbound calls. In addition, current Pinger customers who upgrade will be able to keep their existing Pinger phone number, and all customers can send and receive free unlimited texts to over 29 countries.

With Textfree apps for Android, iOS, and the Web, Pinger has over 15 million customers and has grown to become the 7th largest carrier in the U.S.
