I remember the days of the cassette Walkman, when headphones were all alike. Black foam covered speakers that sat on top of the ear was pretty much the only option. Boy how these times have changed. The options for headphones have become nearly endless with in-ear and DJ style and almost every color of the rainbow available. Along with these options, we have also seen a huge increase in audio quality and comfort. Headphones have become an extension of who we are and our own personal style. Design is as important to some as sound quality and comfort. With all of this in mind, Energy Sistem is announcing a new DJ headphone designed by Porta… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Are you someone who is not ready to give up your wristwatch in favor of simply checking the time on your mobile phone? I don’t blame you if you aren’t; I’m not either. As a result I’m always looking at watches, considering ones I might wear and balancing function and geek factor against the watch’s looks. The Mutewatch is a design I recently found that looks cool, is simple enough to operate, and adds the function of timers and alarms. The use of “swiping” is cool to see on a watch, and for $259, it’s not too outrageous. Take a look … Meet the Mutewatch from Mutewatch Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Some reports suggest that the vast majority of iPads and other assorted tablets spend the majority of time at home. That may be the case for some, even many, iPads but it is certainly not true for mine. No, my iPad goes pretty much everywhere these days, and that means I need a good way to carry it. And when I am going on a trip I need a good way to protect the iPad AND carry some assorted accessories such as the charger, headphones and, at times, a wireless keyboard. That is why I was so curious about Pelican’s 1075 Hardback case for the iPad. It allows you to carry your iPad, Apple’s Bluetooth wireless keyboard and a number of other accessories while keeping them safe. (This IS Pelican after all and they are known for heavy-duty protection.) The company even goes so far as to refer to the i1075 Hardback as a “portable office”. A case that turns your iPad into a portable office? That’s crazy-talk isn’t it? Well, perhaps not… read on.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

The initial press release for The Darkness II came in a month ago … but as we were right in the midst of mega-release time for video games, I chose to hold it back until there was more breathing room to appreciate it! The original Darkness game from 2007 features a great and unique blend of survival-horror, a dark crime drama, supernatural elements and first person gameplay in a non-linear world. It wasn’t perfect, but was intriguing and not a run of the mill clone of other games. Now we finally are just a few months from the arrival of the sequel, aptly named The Darkness II! Here are some details: The Darkness Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Okay, let’s get this out of the way right up front: I’m not a golfer. I know how to play golf; I’m actually not all that bad at playing golf; but I do not play. For one thing, it has negative associations for me of my Dad’s battle with cancer (he had a chemo gadget that he wore in a belt pack even out on the links!). For another, I’m just not the “golfing type”, if you know what I mean–my college experience was defined by hacky-sack and illicit substances (among other things), not golf. (Frisbee golf, though, is a different matter . . .) But not only is this not about me, it’s the holiday… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I started a new job recently which allows me to work out of my home office. That’s great, but in the last few years my home office has become . . . how shall I say this? . . . a frelling disaster. Especially when it comes to cabling, particularly charge cables. Multiport adapters, stuff plugged in to my MacBook willy-nilly, cables twisting and twining all over the place. There was no doubt it was time to organize all those charging cables. Callpod is right on that wavelength: they offer the Fueltank (portable charger) and Chargepod (6-1 charger) options, to help you with your charging needs in this era of rechargeable batteries and… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

. Whiskey Disks. It’s probably wise not to try to say that three times fast, especially if you’ve been drinking whiskey. Actually Whiskey Disks are a new product designed to give spirits fans the best possible enjoyment of their sipping. When I first heard about Whiskey Disks, I immediately reached out the manufacturers to see if I could try some out for myself. They quickly obliged, which is fortunate since I usually enjoy at least one glass of bourbon every night after dinner to take the edge off a hard day of writing about food and booze. I normally enjoy my brown liquors on the rocks with a splash of water, but this can be problematic. Why drink whiskey on the rocks? And why the splash? Most scotches and whiskeys benefit from being served slightly chilled, but not to the same degree as vodka or gin, which many people store in their freezers. Straight up is certainly an option, and it certainly avoids the possibility of melting ice diluting your expensive glass of single malt. Alcohol melts ice quickly, so it’s a given that mixing them will eventually lower the proof of the contents of your glass. But if you’re [...]

Were you aware that there were free-to-watch full length movies on YouTube? Ones that the copyright holders either put there or haven’t asked be removed? The folks at BuzzFeed have put together a great list of 74 movies you can watch all the way through right now! The image at top is from one of my favorites, Sam Peckinpah’s 1977 classic Cross of Iron. I link to that directly below. But there are plenty more, such as: – Spiderman – Ghandi – Double Indemnity – 200 Motels – Day of the Dead – A Bridge too Far … and many more! Check out the whole list! I admit, I am totally fascinated by the trend of mashing up bikes with unrelated exercise equipment. I thought the Elliptigo was cool (and the only one I could see someone using in public) until I learned about the Trikke. What’s the Trikke, you ask? It is an electric vehicle that looks sort of like skis on wheels with handlebars. Like a tricycle meets the ski team. According to the company it is foldable, lightweight, and offers a “full body workout”. It looks incredibly fun, and the company even sells accessories like cargo nets to make running errands on the go super easy! They start at $1299, not cheap, but in-line with a high-end regular bike. Check… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

There have been loads of psychological and other studies related to the ability (or inability) of men and women to be ‘just friends’. This one has as part of its’ conclusion: Of course platonic friendships are possible as these three example show but we all know they get complicated when physical attraction and lack of transparency comes into the picture. They also get complicated when people are in a committed relationship with someone else. Most of the stuff I have read is pretty non-committal – platonic relationships CAN happen, but can also easily get messy if one person has feelings and the other doesn’t. Yeah … thanks for that. This… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
