Styletap Gives PalmOS Apps CPR On iOS

Posted on 11 December 2011

(image courtesy Styletap) My first PDA was a Palm M100. My first smartphone was a Treo 650. I loved Palm OS. But I didn’t hesitate to move on when iOS and Android pushed the envelope in the smartphone world, and personally I don’t miss any Palm apps. Now, there are plenty of people who did, and Styletap tried to reach them with their Palm OS emulator, which was jailbreak-only on the iPhone. But it’s been YEARS since a Palm OS device was produced, and now WebOS is open source. So does the world REALLY need a way to keep Palm OS apps alive? Apparently, Styletap thinks so, and they’re offering a way to wrap them in… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

The Periodic Table of Swearing … Pretty Much What It Sounds Like

Posted on 11 December 2011

The periodic table of the elements is a great visual tool that allows you to quickly discover elements by means of a two-dimensional look-up method that encompasses multiple aspects. That visual tool has been used for many things … and has now been put to use as a work of interactive art by Jon Link and Mick Bunnage of Modern Toss. It is, quite simply, a fully cross-referenced guide to British swearing. Here is a look at the modern uses of the periodic table that refers to the Modern Toss table: Artists and designers fascinated by the periodic table have used it primarily as a visual signifier and celebration of form. Posted on 11 December 2011

Welcome back to another weekend of insane game deals for you to ‘gobble’ up! I am sure I’m getting jaded – it seems with each week I am unimpressed by the list of hundreds of games at 50% off or more and have a hard time grabbing five favorites … but when I dig in I still realize how awesome the deals are! Infinity Blade II, One Week (or so) On

Posted on 10 December 2011

If you read Michael’s post about our early reactions to Infinity Blade II, you’ll know that I was really excited to get this game.  I loved Infinity Blade I, and couldn’t wait to get the sequel.  One of the things I love about both IB, and other games that use the Unreal Engine game driver, is that they don’t utilize “virtual controls”.  That is, rather than having a “virtual” joystick and buttons on your device screen in an attempt to emulate a PS2 or other handheld device, Unreal Engine games use taps and swipes for the gameplay.  This both frees up screen real estate for the game itself–pretty important on the iPhone or iPod… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Adventures in Customer Service: DianeDuane.com

Posted on 10 December 2011

During this busy Holiday season with so many great deals, it is easy to make an error as you check out – especially on pages with multi-select options. For example, you can choose the correct size of a shirt and then mess up as you look at a variety of colors and don’t re-check the size before your sale is complete. Ultimately what happens after the mistake depends on how you handle it and the customer service of the company – but it is always important to remember that YOU made the mistake and bear the responsibility. Over the Thanksgiving holiday I wrote about a great deal at DianeDuane.com for the entire Young… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Cardo Motorcycle BT HeadSet: Communicate with Up to 3 Other Riders

Posted on 09 December 2011

One of the things that I like best about the iPhone 4S and Siri is that now I can do hands-free stuff on my iPhone without endangering my driving.  If I want to know the temperature, I just tap the button on my headset, Siri pings me, and I ask.  Or if I need to know my appointments for the day.  Or whatever.  Having Siri available via my Bluetooth headset is a real boon. And Cardo wants to make that boon available to you motorcyclists out there.  Their new Bluetooth headset not only gives you in-helmet Bluetooth goodness, but also allows you to communicate to other riders in your group at distances of up… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Angry Birds Released for Original 1989 Nintendo GameBoy!

Posted on 09 December 2011

Well … ok, maybe not! But thanks to the mad image juxtaposition skills of Dan Cohen, it looks that way. And really, just HOW surprised would you have been if it WAS true? Let’s be serious – Angry Birds has ‘jumped the shark’ … in reality it did so in 2010. It is a cute 15-minute time waster with enough content to be highly replayable. But when you think about it … it really isn’t much beyond a well executed touch-based singular game mechanic. Try this – play it on the PSP or on a PC. Guess what? It is crap. Without an iOS or Android device the game is not… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

HP Open Sources WebOS

Posted on 09 December 2011

HP has put up a press release regarding the fate of WebOS.  WebOS has been given to the open source community. HP will engage the open source community to help define the charter of the open source project under a set of operating principles: The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform HP will be an active participant and investor in the project Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation Software will be provided as a pure open source project This is probably the best thing that HP could have done with this.  Once everything is finalized, it will then be… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
