A rather odd bit of news crossed my inbox, from Aspyr Media who is one of the main companies bringing games to the Mac, usually as what is known as a ‘Cider’ port, which is essentially a compatibility wrapper that allows games to be ported more quickly … but also saps performance and often kills compatibility with PC versions – and ALWAYS means you won’t get a ‘SteamPlay’ version.

The news is that they have released the 1.1 patch for the 2008 RPG Neverwinter Nights 2 (released for PC in 2006). The patch is specifically for the retail version, as the Mac App Store version is already updated. What is interesting is that I grabbed the App Store version last week when it was on sale since my MacGameStore version ‘expired’ (which is just one example of why I will NEVER buy from them again) and was in the midst of reviewing the game!

This patch is ONLY for digital (no disc) versions of NeverWinter Nights 2 that were NOT purchased from The Mac App Store.

Notes
This is an official update for Neverwinter Nights 2 digital versions that were not purchased from the Mac App Store. It will fully update the digital release of Neverwinter Nights 2. It should not be used for the Mac App Store release or boxed copy of Neverwinter Nights 2.

This update contains the following fixes:

- Fixes an issue where spell effects appears as black squares.
