UPS dropped off a little jewel this morning, the HTC Star Trek branded as a Qtek 8500. This is HTC’s first clamshell Smartphone, and it runs Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone.

Immediately evident is the fact that this is not the business-like black version – oh no, instead this is the hot pink version. 😀

So let’s unbox her and take a look…

Inside the wider portion of the box are all of the documentation and software disks.

The box includes the Qtek 8500 “Musicphone” (that’s what the box says!), headset, AC adapter, USB sync cable, user manual, quick start guide, two CDs with applications and set-up software.

The booty…

The “pinkie” measures 3.8″ long x 2.0″ wide x 0.65″ thick, and it weighs 3.6 ounces. The pink aluminum casing is not smooth, instead it has these light ribbs that give the phone a really unique texture.

This Smartphone has GSM Quadband / GPRS & EDGE, Bluetooth, Dual TFT Displays, and a 1.3 megapixel camera.

This phone obviously took some styling cues from the ultra-thin RAZR; it is skinny!

The microSD goes under the SIM card, and both hide out in the battery compartment.

I’ll post more later, but in the meantime, the Star Trek’s spec sheet may be seen here.

  1. Hey Judie, how on earth are you getting all these cool devices????

The Star Trek is one great looking smartphone (although I have to say I prefer black :D). I would love to be able to say to someone when they ask:

    Them: What phone is that?
    Me: The Star Trek
    Them: Your kidding?

    I love Star Trek 😀 😀 😀

  2. Mitchell, I also have a Palm 700p and a 700wx on hand; I am over-flowing with awesome devices at the moment. 😀

  3. Judie, Does your cell company let you activate the slew of devices you get to review? Some of the biggies and my little cell co. only allow on their systems what they sell.

  4. As long as the device is unlocked (which all of the GSM devices I review are), I can plug my T-Mobile SIM in and everything works perfectly.

The 700p I just received is a loaner from Sprint, and they sent it to me with service. The 700wx I bought, so I will transfer my Sprint service directly to it. The Q I reviewed last week was on someone else’s Verizon account, so I couldn’t wreak any havoc with it.

Who is your service through? CDMA carriers are usually the biggest pains, I think – since you have to actually transfer service and activate the phone. I am waiting for the day when CDMA uses a SIM card, too. 😛

  5. I got my wife a Cingular 3125 (the US version of the Star Trek), and it is an awesome phone! its exactly what she wants, and it gives her synchronization with her contacts so she has all of her phone numbers in her phone, but editable on the desktop.

  6. PS… Hope Sarah feels better!!

  7. But where are they all coming from? That would be so cool to have these things turning up in your mailbox all the time!

  8. Chris, from playing with the Star Trek today, I think this would be the perfect solution for someone that wants a way smarter than average phone. I really like it a lot! Would it be my main PDA? No. But it is a device I could walk out of the house with, confident that my schedule & contacts were all intact and up to date. So far I have nothing but good to say about it!

Sarah is feeling better, thank you for asking! Her allergies really worked her over today. 🙁

Mitchell, they are coming from various device faeries all over the country! 😉 Ha! Some I am buying (Palm 700wx -which is arriving tomorrow!!), some I bought but will most likely return (iPAQ 5915), others are on loan (Palm 700p), and the Star Trek (love that name, too!) was a very sweet gift from a good buddy. 😀

  9. To the 4th post above: Hi Judie, I use nTelos, a Virginia based CDMA service. Yep, no SIM card in our phones. They’ve just started carrying PDA phones and the Treo 650 and PPC6700 are the only two. We wait. I used to say their motto was “Our phones make -and- receive phone calls !”

  10. Lex, I totally appreciate what you are going through because it used to be just as lame here in my town. Only recently has San Angelo even begun to get great coverage by multiple carriers, so I am enjoying it for all it’s worth. 😛

  11. Huh? “Star Trek”??? How did they name it that? Is Paramount getting a cut of the profits?
Maybe they should take the black model and put a gold lid on it in the TOS fashion. LOL.

  12. Wellllll….I think they get around by calling it the STR TRK…which is pronounced “Star Trek” 😉 heh heh
