Like politics and religion, grilling is a topic where advice is rarely appreciated or even more rarely followed. I'm sure you're great at cooking a steak over charcoal or gas, and I wouldn't tell you to your face if I thought otherwise. A. because you're feeding me and B. because you probably have fire and sharp BBQ tools within arm's reach.
Maybe you're one of those people who can judge a steak's doneness by comparing the surface of the meat to the firmness of the fleshy part of your thumb pad. Good for you then. (Please, oh please, don't cut into a steak while it's still on the grill to check whether it's cooked enough. Meat must rest after cooking or you'll just let all the good juices out!) But as techy types, gadget enthusiasts should strive to introduce some rigor into their grilling methods and cook to exact internal temperatures whenever possible. For example, I like my steak to come off the grill at precisely 122 degrees and allow it to come up to a beautiful pink medium-rare while it's resting. You are letting it rest, right?
If we can employ some cool new iPhone technology to help out with these methods, so much the better. Enter the iGrill Bluetooth® cooking thermometer from <a
href="http://www.igrillinc.com" target="_blank">www.igrillinc.com</a> and the free accompanying “Steak Time” app from <a
href="http://www.OmahaSteaks.com" target="_blank">Omaha Steaks</a>. So shoo the dog out of the kitchen and put your steak on a high counter to bring it to room temperature while we investigate these fun kitchen tools. <a

One of my favorite exercise regimens as part of the battle of the bulge is cycling, both on the road and in the gym.
So that's why I was excited to see the latest announcement from Velocomp that they have developed an iOS-based cycling computer that interfaces with iPhones and iPods. I usually ride with my iPhone anyway, for safety on the road and for entertainment indoors, so this integration is welcomed. Combined with a wireless speed/cadence sensor on your bicycle, the iBike Powerhouse system tracks your progress and creates goal-oriented cycling plans for your individual fitness level.
Here's the rest of the information from their product release announcement today at CES in Las Vegas: <a

I mean it just screams "As Seen on TV" thanks to its claim to be the Swiss Army Knife of your tailgating needs with a propane grill top, a griddle for frying or warming and even a 20 oz. fryer basket. But upon further inspection, darned if it doesn't live up to its motto, "Tailgating Turned up to 11." Let's take a closer look.
First of all, if you order one of these via mail order, be prepared to tip the Fed Ex guy if he has to carry this big old box up any steps. Weighing in at 37 lbs., you'll be very pleased that the Blacktop 360 comes with a handy carry bag that is big enough to hold the grill and all the tools and accessories that come with it. <a
href="http://www.geardiary.com/2012/01/05/blacktop-360-portable-griddlegrillfryer-review/img_2032jpg_6413805217_l-2/" rel="attachment wp-att-176951"><img

I know that sounds like a lot of area, but most of the cooking space is arranged in a circle around the deep fryer and is divided into and infrared grilling area, a griddle and a warming plate. Organizing a lot of food on the Blacktop 360 does require the skills of a good suburban dad packing the truck of the Family Truckster before a three week vacation. <a

In my younger day, I might have tipped a few back, and I do see the young folks dropping a Jägerbomb every now and then at my local watering hole. But for the most part, I like to sip my drinks rather than snapping my head back and pouring one down my gullet.
However, if you are in the holiday spirit for some holiday spirits and want to maximize the efficiency of your consumption, then perhaps a set of <a

It's a little-known secret that lots of actors and musicians from other genres choose to live in the area because, in general, we Nashvillagers pretty much leave them alone when we see them out in public. Nicole Kidman shops all the time at my local Whole Foods and can dine in peace at the food bar with no fear of autograph hounds. Peter Frampton has become a gentleman farmer in a Nashville suburb, and ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit moved here from Columbus, OH to escape the ravenous Ohio State fans. Whiskey Disks. It’s probably wise not to try to say that three times fast, especially if you've been drinking whiskey. Actually Whiskey Disks are a new product designed to give spirits fans the best possible enjoyment of their sipping.
When I first heard about Whiskey Disks, I immediately reached out the manufacturers to see if I could try some out for myself. They quickly obliged, which is fortunate since I usually enjoy at least one glass of bourbon every night after dinner to take the edge off a hard day of writing about food and booze. I normally enjoy my brown liquors on the rocks with a splash of water, but this can be problematic.
Why drink whiskey on the rocks? And why the splash? Most scotches and whiskeys benefit from being served slightly chilled, but not to the same degree as vodka or gin, which many people store in their freezers. Straight up is certainly an option, and it certainly avoids the possibility of melting ice diluting your expensive glass of single malt. Alcohol melts ice quickly, so it's a given that mixing them will eventually lower the proof of the contents of your glass. But if you're going to drink whiskey at room temperature, you might as well serve it in a shot glass and just knock it back. Around 50 degrees Fahrenheit is about right if you're looking to maximize your sipping pleasure. <a

One of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday afternoon is to put a pork butt on the smoker first thing in the morning and watch college football all day while the meat soaks up the hickory goodness. Since you have to add new wood every hour or so, it pretty much guarantees that you have to stay on your couch all day and restoke the fire at halftime of each game. Sorry about those chores, sweetie. Can’t you see I’m working here?
While there are probably lots of places in your town to pick up a pound of your bbq, occasionally it's nice to be able to show off your grillsmanship and smoke your own butt or shoulder. Luckily, there is The Peg Leg Porker himself, Carey Bringle, is here to help you out. <a
href="http://www.geardiary.com/2011/11/30/smoke-like-a-pro-with-the-peg-leg-porker-bbq-kit/carey-bringle-full/" rel="attachment wp-att-171365"><img

He's the kind of guy whose business card reads: "Wars Fought — Stud Service — Revolutions Started — Tigers Tamed — Assassinations Plotted — Bars Emptied — Governments Run — Uprisings Quelled — Orgies Organized." Depending on when you ask him, he will tell you that he lost his leg to a shark attack or in a bar fight or that he donated it to an Olympic marathoner that needed a spare tire. The truth is more mundane, but Carey's attitude is always optimistic and contagious. The delicious irony of <a
href="http://www.jokesplace.com/joke/famouspig.html" target="_blank">this old joke</a> only makes it better. Plus, it fits in perfectly with the logo on his barbecue sauce.
A competition cooker, Carey is a three-time medalist in the Memphis in May World BBQ Competition and Bon Appétit magazine named his sauce as one of their top five favorites. Rather than keep his proprietary recipes and secrets to himself, Carey has assembled a kit of tools and ingredients to allow you to make your own pulled pork or poultry on your gas or charcoal grill or your home smoker. He sells them on the QVC network or you can get one <a

href="http://www.geardiary.com/category/reviews-and-more/yum-log/">Yum Log</a>" section where we take a look at kitchen, food and cooking products and gadgets. In the couple years since I stopped writing here, I've been a full-time <a
href="http://www.nashvillescene.com/nashville/ArticleArchives?author=1179865">food blogger for the Nashville Scene</a> in my home town and an occasional contributor to regional and national food magazines and blogs, so hopefully I'm at least as qualified to write about these topics as I was <a
href="http://www.geardiary.com/2007/05/26/if-it-has-leaves-three-leave-it-be-or-if-nobody-else-will-do-it-chris’ll-review-it/">to test an anti-poison ivy cream.</a> So what's first in the new review queue? How about the Belkin Kitchen Cabinet Mount for iPads and other tablets? I do a lot of cooking at home, and despite the fact that I just turned in a cookbook I wrote to my publisher last month, I'm much more likely to use my iPad to source a recipe than any of the multitude of cookbooks that occupy so much shelf space in my kitchen.
Of course that means exposing my precious tablet to any number of countertop dangers - acidy lemons and limes, clouds of flour and corn meal, sharp knives clattering across the cutting board etc. (Yeah you should see me when I cook. It's a real Lucy episode in there sometimes.) The iPad is an ideal device to assist you when you're cooking, because not only can you keep the recipe in view at all times, you can do so many other things that a regular cookbook can't. Need to figure out a substitute for that spice that was formerly in the bottle that somebody <strong>PUT BACK IN THE DRAWER AFTER IT WAS PRACTICALLY EMPTY?</strong> (Sorry. Sensitive subject.) <a
href="http://homecooking.about.com/library/weekly/blspicesub.htm">Google it</a>. Can't remember how to cut up a whole chicken into eight pieces? Let my kitchen hero Alton Brown <a
href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dbc1aW5C1W0">demonstrate for you</a>. Try that with you momma's copy of "The Joy of Cooking."
So if the iPad is so useful, but also in so much peril on the countertop, it only makes sense to get it out of the way. That's where the good folks at <a
href="http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=557466">Belkin</a> come in. They have designed a mount for the iPad (or any similarly sized tablet) that not only keeps the technology out of harm's way, but that actually raises it to cabinet-level, which is probably ergonomically better for you anyway. <a

The basic idea is that after the user sets up a set of parameters for when the application is enabled, they must complete a series of five math problems within 60 seconds to gain access to the send functions of their Gmail account. Kind of like a breathalyzer for your keyboard. Depending on your natural math abilities, you can vary the difficulty from 2nd grade math to grad school. The default time window is Friday and Saturday night, from 10:00 pm until 4:00 am, but you can change that <a

In an attempt to help address this problem, the folks at ARC Wireless Solutions have released the latest version of the Freedom Blade wireless signal booster for PDAs, cell phones and laptop wireless access cards.

We joined a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture, last year and receive a bushel of whatever is fresh off the farm every week from spring until fall. A side effect of this is the fact that until the succulent peppers and tomatoes start to ripen in July we often find ourselves buried under mountains of greens-chard, kale, collards, spinach and the like. We've learned to blanch them, sautée them, bake them and eat them raw in salads.
It also means that my girlfriend spends a lot of time checking her teeth for hangers. For years, we had a secret routine where she would turn to me and say with a big smile, "How's your grandmother?" The correct answer is always, of course, "Deceased." But the question is actually a cue for me to check her teeth and respond either "fine" or "she's having a little trouble" and point to the corresponding part of my own grillwork where there might be an offending stray bit of greenery. An aside-When you're pointing to your own face to let someone else know that they have a sesame seed in their teeth or maybe a stray bit of nacho cheese in the corner of their mustache, do you point to the same side or the mirror image? Just curious.
Anyhoo, it looks like technology has put me out of another job. Because my girlfriend doesn't need to inquire about the health of my dead relatives anymore. I've been replaced by <strong><a

Then invariably, I'll be the one to volunteer to try it. Maybe it's just the dreamer in me. My little world is full of butterflies and unicorns, too.
And it takes a dreamer to believe in a product like a telescope adapter for an iPhone. Especially when you read the claims on the website of its features:
- makes the super wide angel
- the larger luminous flux
- the higher visual acuteness
- good for color reduction
- detachable from the crystal case
- 6X optical Zooming
Now I don't know if it makes angels wider or reduces color, and I'm pretty sure I don't know what luminous flux is, but I'll be a monkey's uncle if the darned thing doesn't work!

Who are you and what have you done with my beer-drinking buddy, Chris?!"
Sure, part of my attitude change has come from the upward spiral of fuel costs. I just couldn't afford to drive a Tahoe anymore so I traded it in on a Camry. I really think that the Greening of America is getting to me. I'm not a fanatic about it, and I don't know what my carbon footprint is. But when I encounter a choice between doing something that is more socially responsible than the same old, same old, it's becoming more natural (no pun intended) to take the greener option.

Sure, I use a Dell at work and an HP laptop at home, but my girlfriend is on Apple laptop number three in the past four years, and I went to college near Cupertino in the second half of the 1980's. If you went to Stanford, you just accepted that you were supposed to pay three grand for a Mac SE and an Imagewriter. So I did.
iPod devotee? Yup, that's me too. At last count there were four different models in my household, and iTunes should send me a Christmas card.
But there's one thing that most people won't admit for fear of waking the sleeping Jobs-Bear. So I'll acknowledge the elephant in the room. Brace yourself fanboys (and fangirlz.)
<em>The earbuds that come with all Apple products stink.</em> There, I said it. They are uncomfortable. They don't fit in most human-sized ears. They fall out when you're exercising, jogging or even walking. They hurt after thirty minutes of use, and they probably excessively damage your hearing because you have to turn them up so loud to get any bass response at all.
Remember those four iPods I own? I've purchased at least twice that many aftermarket headphones in an effort to improve my listening experience. You can't swing a dead cat around my house without tangling Tabby's claws in a set of white earbuds tangling themselves up on some random flat surface in my office.
But the good people at <a
href="http://www.complyfoam.com/products/whoomp/whoomp-earbud-enhancers/">Comply</a> have come up with a way to improve the fidelity quality of the iPod aural without completely abandoning the phones that Steve built. Behold, the Whoomp! Earbud Enhancers.<p

Maybe the description of the item just sounded so cool that I hope it lives up to the hype. Other times I’m rooting for the product because I believe in their mission and am rooting for the company to succeed. But in the end, the product has to actually work for us here at GearDiary to recommend it to you, oh gentle reader.
The Solio Solar Charger from CREDO Mobile is exactly this kind of gadget.

I've been struck by a wee case of reviewer's block of late. I am in the midst of testing several new gadgets which I am excited to share with you all, but I also have some products that are real dogs. And like my Charm School teacher always said, "If you can't say something nice about somebody..."
But in the interest of fair and impartial reporting, GearDiary readers deserve the straight scoop. Heck, we've even shared the <a
href="http://www.geardiary.com/2008/03/07/surviving-the-nuclear-winter-after-an-atomic-sever-crash-part-one/">trials and travails of a potentially devastating server crash</a>. We all came out stronger on the other side of the crisis, but it was the big UGH.
So it's time to jump start my idling cranium. I figured it would be best to start with a product that doesn't promise to do much but that perfectly accomplishes what it does promise. And it looks pretty darned cool doing it.

I’m a video poker fan. Somebody once told me that playing video poker is like getting paid to take a standardized test every eight seconds. That’s a good thing for me, because I was always good at standardized tests. It used to infuriate my math teachers that I was getting C’s in calculus class while I was finishing in the top 3 in the state on the Mathlympics, or whatever the heck they called them back in the Dark Ages. I figured if they were nice enough to put the answer in amongst the multiple choices, I should be able to find it somewhere.
So after graduating college, I parlayed this talent into a job teaching for The Princeton Review. I really enjoyed that job, teaching high school and college kids how to excel on the PSAT, SAT, LSAT, GMAT etc. It wasn’t exactly an academic pursuit; it was more like learning the techniques to finish a video game. I recognized that if colleges were really going to use the results of a tricked up test to decide who they were going to admit, it was only fair that the folks willing to learn how to beat the test deserved to move up the waitlist.
Now my former bosses have leveraged the latest technology to automate the process. More details after the jump.

Of course the window just looks out into a bigger room at somebody else’s cube. And they quit recently, so I’m just staring at an empty chair and a blank computer monitor. Maybe I should burn up some carbon credits by leaving a screensaver of the outside world up on my ex-coworker’s screen so that I can pretend to have some contact with the outside world.
Or I could just dress the barren space up with some decorations from the good people at <a

Unfortunately, it also seems like I can't see one of these without buying it.
This is because most of them haven't really worked worth a squat between their awkward controls and their inability to hold a station to deliver a static-free transmission of the treasure trove of southern rock, funk and Richard Pryor albums I have stored on my video iPod.
Of all the gadgets I've tried to retrofit my 1999 Tahoe to the 21st century music delivery system, the TransDock Deluxe is definitely another one. But seriously, it is the best one I have used and I think it may actually be the solution I have been looking for.

When I brought my Mac SE into work from home so that I could use Filemaker to develop my own databases and phone lists, it was the first PC in a company of 200+ employees. And it remained the first PC (well, Mac actually) for five years after that. My boss still has his email address forwarded to his secretary for her to print out and put in his in box. One of our divisions actually had rotary phones until the turn of the millennium. I once got a phone call from a division manager who said he was standing in front of  The Birth of the Computer exhibit at the Smithsonian and noticed he had the same green-screen DEC monitor gathering dust on his desk.
So imagine the uproar a decade ago when I decided to buy myself a Plantronics headset to allow me to work hands-free at my job in customer service for a large wholesaler of industrial products. The Lily Tomlin/Ernestine the Operator jokes ran rampant at my expense. That is until the rest of the denizens of my cubicle farm noticed that I didn't walk around with a crick in my neck all the time like they did. I never had to worry about the phone slipping off my shoulder while I reached for a price book, probably deafening a potential customer with the crash of the plastic headset against the Formica desktop. I didn't have to install one of those huge prosthetic devices to cradle the phone and prop my head up like the victim of horrible car accident. The clincher was when folks realized that if they got a headset they could smoke while they worked and still have a hand free to write orders. This was years ago, remember.

Normally, even despite my best efforts to cover myself from head to toe in old pants, long-sleeved shirts, ragg socks, hiking boots, a bandanna, a floppy grumpy old man hat and a burka when I'm working around poison ivy, invariably some urishiol oil manages to penetrate the perimeter and give me a couple of weeks of itchy discomfort. The IvyBlock website swears that scratching doesn't spread the rash, but usually I end up with outbreaks in all the places that I can't reach or shouldn't scratch in polite company.
But not this year! I didn't go out of my way to cover every inch of exposed skin before I headed out into the woods to do battle with Mother Nature. Instead, I applied IvyBlock to all the same places I would spread sunblock if I was headed out fishing. You know, the "farmer's tan" area. Following the directions on the bottle, I waited at least 15 minutes after application before I risked exposure to the poison ivy (and before I went back in water after eating. Thanks, Mom.) <a

For instance, if the product has four wheels or a screen bigger than 19", you can bet <a

But when the times came to review a new product from <a
