href="http://music.nokia.com.au">Australian Nokia Music Store launch last night at the Oxford Art Factory. Great venue, made more appealing by the fact that it's walking distance from my place and there was free booze and nibblies.
Oddly, there were hardly any other tech journos there. I spotted two that I didn't know well enough to attempt small talk with, so I secreted myself into one of the stairwells and played with my non-Nokia iPhone. My state of friendlessness would've had me leaving immediately after the presentation and a couple of beers if not for the promise of The Presets performing, one of my favourite electro brands.
I left the event with a nice little goody bag from Nokia containing a set of portable mobile phone speakers and a $10 voucher for the Music Store. As a bit of background, the Australian Nokia Music Store launched yesterday with 2.5 million tracks in its catalogue. Individual tracks are $1.70 each, albums start at $17, and you can stream unlimited tracks from your PC for $10 a month.
I decided to give the unlimited streaming thing a go on my Asus Eee PC (which is still running the default Xandros Linux OS), and was greeted by this window.<p

The Canon Hacker's Development Kit (CHDK) can add new features to your camera - like adding the RAW file format and the ability to run scripted actions - as well as enhancing the existing hardware (such as boosting shutter speed from 1/1,600 to 1/60,000 of a second). <img

Unfortunately my Canon Ixus 80 isn't supported, so it would be great to hear from someone who's applied the hack <a

But because I like to shake things up every now and then, I fired up an old smartphone over the weekend - the HTC Artemis - and decided to see if I could possibly go back to using Windows Mobile after having sucked at the teat of Apple. Read on for my findings! <img

In an industry where having a ten-minute scoop on a particular gadget or new technology can drive thousands of additional page views, the cut-throat competition between these two power brokers is quite extraordinary to observe, as detailed in the excellent Wired article Gear Blog Rivals Engadget and Gizmodo Turn the Competition Up to 11.
And like a couple of rival hometown newspapers, Engadget and Gizmodo have seen their competition develop into a full-blown feud, complete with charges of malfeasance and sabotage. Engadget rarely links to Gizmodo, and often it's to ridicule the site for faulty predictions; Gizmodo's publisher, blogging impresario Nick Denton, has accused Engadget of being "amateurish" and "gullible." "I don't think we are nice or decent to each other," Lam says. "There is so much animosity, so much pettiness."
http://www.geardiary.com/2008/03/29/keep-all-your-microblogs-updated-with-hellotxt/

Twitter account? Guilty. Jaiku account? Guilty. Never update those two microblogs after getting a Facebook page? Guilty.
If you haven't yet discovered the fun world of microblogging, it's a great way of keeping tabs on what your friends and online acquaintances are up to without having to make the effort of actually contacting them directly. And vice versa. Depending on the service you're using, you get a certain number of characters (usually 160) to do with as you will, and the usual style of posts ranges from what you're currently doing, to how your day's been, to what mood you're currently in.
What surprised me is the number of emails I've gotten in the last couple of weeks informing me that so-and-so is following my Twitter feed - despite the fact that I haven't updated it in months! Hmmn, this makes my Internet self feel guilty for not making more of an effort. So I decided to do a bit of research and see whether anyone had come up with a microblogging aggregation service that would let me post one status update that would be pushed out to all of the microblogs. Okay, I lie, I actually just read about said service in my RSS feeds, but it makes me sound more proactive if I say I went out and looked for it! :P
HelloTxt is a free service that lets you update your status across pretty much all of the Web 2.0 services that offer this feature. The well-known ones like Facebook, Twitter, Jaiku, Plaxo, LinkedIn and Pownce are all on-board, but there are some I've never even heard of, like Gozub, Feecle, Fanfou and Meemi. All you have to do is sign in to all of the services you use through HelloTxt, then update your status message from the Dashboard. In my quick tests, updates are pushed out to all the specified services immediately, and there's also a mobile version that's optimised for small screen sizes. <a

I haven't even gotten around to filling my iPhone with music. As it is, I've only got one full album and a few stray songs that don't even have their album art added and all the ID3 tags filled. Tsk tsk. It's all stuff that I'll get around to eventually, but I could totally relate to Lore Sjoberg's column on Wired entitled "Perils of joining an iPod nation".
Most guides to Smart Playlists suggest you start by rating your own music. This makes me uncomfortable. Telling myself how much I like the music I chose and bought seems a little narcissistic. Normally I'm so self-absorbed that if you hug me hard you're likely to get ego all over your sweater, but this is a bit much even for me. I feel as self-obsessed as a teenage ouroboros on Twitter.
<img

But if you're reading this site, then you're probably like me and derive an inordinate amount of enjoyment from having all of your toys and gadgets with you wherever you go. There's a lot to be said for putting your smartphone, MP3 player, digital camera or laptop away in order to be able to fully soak in your surroundings, but when used in moderation, I think gadgets can actually enhance your travel experience.
There are all sorts of considerations to take into account when travelling with your tech toys. Will it have enough storage for all my photos and music? Is it durable enough to handle the rigours of the road? Will the battery last me until the next time I get to a power outlet? And what happens if my bag gets stolen?
Gadget insurance is something I'll cover in another post, but the rest of the concerns are easily take care of with the right tech and accessories.

Thankfully no one was hurt, but when my boyfriend asked for my camera to take a photo, I hesitated. Would we get in trouble for taking a photo? (The photo we took)
This is probably a dilemma that many people face now that cameras are so ubiquitous. Are you allowed to take a photo of that interesting-looking chap at the park, or is it an invasion of privacy? Can you photograph the new donut place at the mall to show your kids, or will a security guard request to confiscate your camera/phone? And are you legally obliged to hand over your camera if someone states you've taken photos unlawfully?
If you're based in the US, Photojojo's 10 legal commandments of photography will clue you in as to what your rights are.* The law will vary in other countries, but I suspect the rules will be similar if your legal system is based on common law. <a

Luckily I’ve recently moved to Mac OS 10.5 as my main computing environment, so I don’t have to worry about viruses, key loggers and all that jazz. But if you’re a Windows user and have the same aversion as I do to anti-virus software, you should definitely give this SMH story a read: <a

The article talks about a disturbing phenomenon of viruses that are being preloaded onto gadgets before they leave the factory floor, some accidentally, some maliciously. <a

The Advantage’s 5inch screen (which is the same size as some UMPCs) and VGA resolution means you can cram more into the screen - especially when you use the RealVGA utility to run it as its native 640 x 480 resolution. This, combined with a big helping of third party software, turns the Advantage into a capable notebook replacement.<p

Instead the Blackberry presents you with a bunch of urls and html code. Ugly, Ugly, Ugly. Recently rumor sites have reported that native html email capabilities will be coming “soon” from RIM. For those who can’t wait , I noticed that <a

I’ve been testing it for a solid week - and it’s the best and most stable HTML viewer I’ve ever seen on a Blackberry. More thoughts, screen shots and a fat 50% off discount code (only good through 12/31/07) are on the next page.
<a

Instead of struggling with the touchscreen or keypad input, you just activate the voiceclip function, speak into the device’s microphone, and the other party gets an embedded voice clip within the chat window.Mitchell and I have been using the voice clip function with each other this morning - he on the HTC P3600i, and me on the i-mate JASJAR. Sound quality is excellent - sounds even better than speakerphone IMO, which is not surprising as it’s completely digital. Also, I was using it over my wireless network while Mitchell was doing it over 3G, and it works across different devices - I was also getting the voice clips using Windows Live on my MacBook.
The experience was very similar to using a walkie talkie - he’d record a voice clip and send it, I’d listen, record a voice clip in response, and send it back. Sounds complicated, but it really isn’t - Microsoft <span

And it works like speakerphone, so you don’t need to have the handset to your face to use it. If you miss what the other person said, simply hit the Play button to repeat it. You can even save clips to your device. Dear Artie You and I got off to a great start. We had some wonderful times, sitting in the sun together, my hand gently stroking your chassis. Granted, you were a bit slow at first, but as I got to know you, I realised that you were just waiting for that special someone to come along and unlock your potential. So I put in the hard yards and made a lot of compromises. I did all I could to make our relationship work.
And we were almost there, when you dropped the bombshell. You had a faulty touchscreen. Not a hardware issue per se - more like a driver problem in Vista. Worse, I did a Google search, and to my horror I discovered that other people had posted about your “little problem” and were awaiting a solution.
Artie, I hope you realise that, if not resolved, this touchscreen problem will amount to an irreconcilable difference, and I will have no choice but to part ways with you. I refuse to let my emotions cloud my judgment. This has got to be fixed, or I’m leaving. I’m only being this frank with you because I truly care about you and want you to change for the better.
Yours sincerely
Jenneth the quandaries of being a gadget reviewer: which one(s) do I take with me today?
Once I decided to bring a full-sized Tablet PC with me I had to decide between the Fujitsu P1610, the Lenovo x61 and the HP 2710p. The P1610 was my first choice being smaller and lighter than the other two but since my work was going to be writing I felt the smaller keyboard of the P1610 might not be the best choice. I can touch type fine on the Fuji but for extended touch typing sessions the small keyboard can get a little uncomfortable so I decided a bigger device would better serve me this time. I thought about bringing the Lenovo with me because it’s such a sweet, fast device but it’s also the biggest of all these devices and I’d have to bring a bigger gear bag than I wanted. That would entail having to transfer anything in my smaller gear bag to the larger one and that’s a hassle for a simple trip to the coffee shop. The HP 2710p is a fast and smaller Tablet so I decided to take that one for this trip.
My dilemma’s actually a different one - not so much which device I bring (as I tend to standardise on one particular device of each type for weeks - even months - at a time), but how many. If I could get away with it, I’d bring them all with me, in which case I’d need a small shopping trolley to carry them all! My iPod and/or Zune for listening to music, Artie for writing, surfing the Net and playing Scrabulous, my Nokia N95, my Canon EOS 40D for taking photos, my Panasonic HDC-SD1 for shooting video, my Canon M80 for backing up my camera’s memory card, my Nintendo DS Lite for playing games and - of course - my Battery Geek Portable Power Station to keep everything charged. <a

This month I've got some especially nifty gear that I thought I'd share with Gear Diary readers - and, time permitting, possibly review as well!
First up, I've got the Samsung M8 LCD TV in the living room. Hot diggity dang, this is my favourite HD television so far! Picture quality is smokin' - in a Jim-Carrey-in-the-movie-Mask kinda way, rather than a Oh-my-God-it's-on-fire way. I've tested TV sizes from 40 to 60 inches, and I've decided that 40 is definitely the magic number. The M8 features 3 HDMI 1.3 ports, a gorgeously-glossy piano black casing, and jaw-dropping visuals that make me want to burn an analogue TV effigy in thanks to the HD gods. <img

That said, I'll be sad to say goodbye to all the characters in the show. So it's a good thing that I've now got them immortalised on my iPod with the new 'Lost' game: a simple RPG that uses the same characters and plot lines of the show. I've only played a couple of minutes of the game, but it seems fun, making good use of the iPod's clickwheel to guide Jack around the island. <img

Compared to the latest generation of smartphones, it's way underpowered. My embarrassing admission is that I want one, despite the rational part of my brain insisting that I really don't need another phone. Thank heavens Colorware is around to deal with my buyer's remorse. For $74, they can customise the colour of the Zune's body, wheel, buttons and back, with 29 different colours to choose from. Or, for $325, you can buy a customised Zune from them outright. It's only available for US customers, but Auntie Judie has promised to act as my US surrogate. :)
Here's my terribly girly rendering of how I want my Zune done. <img

Don't get me wrong - I download videos just as much as the next person, but being able to download an entire season of a particular TV show for around US$34.95? The time I save alone makes it incredibly worthwhile, not to mention the guaranteed quality you get from a commercial source.
Granted, buying a DVD box set is ultimately more practical in the long run, but for something I'm probably just going to watch once and then put away, a digital version makes sense. Also, it appeals to my 'impulse buyer' sensibilities - I'm much more likely to hit a 'Purchase' button and get the instant gratification hit from downloading than I am to find a physical product in a store and then line up to pay for it. Urgh, how antiquated! ;)

But there's a phenomenon of BlackBerry users that simply can't switch off. They're the ones you see huddled off in the corner of social gatherings, busily writing replies to emails - however trivial - with the tiny, cramp-inducing keyboards that their thumbs are permanently attached to.
I, my friends, am now one of those social pariahs. For the next few weeks, anyway, while my BlackBerry 8800 is still shiny and new. ;) But I've also discovered that, like school kids that are given their first hit of heroin off a drug dealer for free, our pathetic addiction to mobile email is just not our fault. There is, in fact, no way to turn email delivery off if you're using the BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service). *cue outraged gasps and horrified uproar*
