Welcome back to the Windows Mobile Weekly Roundup series. Last week, Microsoft released an update to their Marketplace for Windows Mobile application, which fixes some security bugs, bringing consumers better experiences with the application. Let’s get started with this week’s roundup, starting with the Featured Software of the Week!
Featured Software of the Week
This week’s featured software would be SPB’s Mobile Shell 3.5. This application has always been one of the best looking Today Screen replacements for Windows Mobile. The combination of a slick interface and some light, handy shortcuts led for a much more pleasing user experience. Each incarnation improved greatly upon the last and this update is no slacker.

Just as we previewed last month, some new and improved features have now been released for Poynt. The screenshot above comes directly from my 9700 and shows the new carousel user interface, live weather background based on your GPS location, as well as a direct option to search for service stations closest to you with the lowest gas prices. The app retains all the goodness users have come to expect — like being able to search, map, add locations to your BlackBerry contact list, email directions, and even purchase movie tickets directly within Poynt.
These upgrades keep Poynt at the head of the pack for location-based searching for the BlackBerry Platform. Sadly, no official word on the planned iPhone app release. Best of all, the app remains free.
UPDATE! IntoMobile’s omnipresent writer & mobile guru Simon Sage noted that the Poynt iPhone app is expected to hit the iTunes App Store at the end of January (and, for the record, it will be free). Take a look at the video the IntoMobile team captured at CES for Poynt for iPhone:
You can download Poynt from BlackBerry App World or by visiting http://m.mypoynt.com from your BlackBerry’s web browser.

There were some rather neat audio products were on display at CES. One of them was the Eos Converge System. The Eos Converge wireless multi-room audio system is for people who use their computer as their main source of music but don’t want to be locked to sitting in the same room as it to listen.
What makes the Eos Converge system stand out is that it requires no software or WiFi connection. The Eos Converge Transmitter and Wireless Receivers automatically connect to one another. That means there is no complicated setup or time lost fussing with connectivity. To start using the system to simply plug the transmitter into the USB port of a computer and then select the music to stream. That music can be anything from iTunes to streaming internet radio stations like Pandora and LastFM.
More information on the Eos Converge system follows. We’ll have a unit for review unit in the coming weeks.

Tired of your WinMo OS or want to give Android a try? Pocketnow has a nice video of a simple linux bootloader that allows you to choose  between Android or WinMo as a bootup option on your  Windows Mobile phone. I don’t know what phones this is compatible with, but I’m gonna assume you can use any phone that has an Android Rom ported for it, or maybe just try out a vanilla Android Rom on your device. See it in action after the break.

Weeks of rumors and fevered speculation are finally over, and the iPad has been released. You can check out Gear Diary’s liveblog, and listen in as Judie, Dan, Larry and I discuss the iPad in our podcast. Of course, there was one area of the iPad announcement that, while rumored, is still a bit shocking: Apple will be opening an iBookstore on the iPad. But what does this mean for ebooks? Should Amazon be sweating bullets? Has the whole ebook market changed with the sweep of a keynote slide? Read on to find out!

Tomorrow is the day! At least if you are one of the people looking forward to the April 3 release of the iPad. That’s right, tomorrow we get to begin the pre-order process and, once that is accomplished… wait.
One of the neat things to see is just how many different ways there will be to carry the iPad once it is out. And that’s a good thing since I suspect many of us will be carrying the thing pretty much everywhere.
One of the first announcements came from the folks at Waterfield. They make some of our favorite cases and were quick to announce the iPad Ultimate SleeveCase and the iPad Suede Jacket. Well they have added two more. First there is the iPad Smart Case. The $59 case “looks simple, but the intent is hard-core protection without the bulk”. Then there is the $29 iPad Slip Case. It offers “Light internal padding with impact-resistant plastic keeps your toy safe and sound”. Both come in a choice of six colors and look great. both are available for pre-order.
Images and the full release follow.
