Are you a Hotmail user? I have had an account since ... forever. And while it hasn't been my primary email since ... well, since I signed up for Yahoo mail around the same time, it is an account that I have maintained and used for a variety of specific purposes through the years. I have found the Hotmail implementation on iOS to be adequate but not outstanding, although it is better than the native support on Android in my experience. I should have known better than to rush into buying music on Google. As I say repeatedly, they have the absolute worst music service bar none. Yet that old siren song of 'great music, low prices' lulled me into not checking Amazon. BIG MISTAKE. Today is 11/11/11 - or in Europe 11/11/11 - and Verizon and Motorola are releasing the cool looking ultra-thin Droid RAZR Android smartphone - at 11:11:11, naturally. Never one to be left out of a chance to overuse a gimmick, Amazon Wireless is getting in on the fun, offering the Droid RAZR for ... yep, $111.11! But ... there is a catch. In an obvious attempt to get everyone into the holiday shopping mood way early, Amazon is holding a 48 hour HDTV and video sale. One of the featured items is the Haier L32D1120 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV, which usually retails for $349.99, but through November 7th it is on sale for $197.00. I may have moved on to an iPhone, but I still have a hacked NOOKcolor running Android! Plus I have two years' worth of Android apps between Google's Marketplace and, more recently, Amazon's Appstore. While it wasn't an everyday ritual, I did try to grab Amazon's free apps of the day if they looked halfway decent, figuring I might want to use them in the future. Now, I'm used to Amazon's Kindle service, where they send me a nice email if a book is updated by the publisher with instructions on how to update it. If you are an Amazon Prime member and sign on to the Amazon.com homepage, you will see the letter from Jeff Bezos above. I've pasted the text in below, but basically it says that Amazon Prime members will soon have access to a wide array of shows from FAX, including The X-Files, Ally McBeal, and The Wonder Years amongst others. They also note FOX movies, but none are listed as of yet. It is clear that with Netflix in a weakened position after losing 600,000 customers after raising prices and then splitting DVD and Streaming businesses, Amazon is looking to assume the #1 video streaming position.

Supposedly, Amazon has been shopping an "ebook subscription service" around to publishers, in an effort to bundle ebooks with Prime membership. Sort of like Netflix for eooks. The closest analog to this is the old "Book of the Month Club" type deals, but this is definitely a step up. It benefits consumers, but does it actually benefit the business of selling books?
