I'm due for an upgrade, and I've been chomping at the bit to try a Windows phone, as evidenced by Today is a good day for T-Mobile customers. This morning the FCC listed the filing for a $1 billion transfer of Spectrum from AT&T to T-Mobile. This pretty much means to the common consumer that T-Mobile will be getting some more bandwidth to grow their GSM network. If you followed the deal last year, you know that AT&T promised a few billion in cash as well as some spectrum to Deutsche Telekom as payment if the takeover did not occur. The front of the room was decorated with color tiles on the wall reminiscent of the live tiles in Windows Phone 7; if there were any doubts about what we were there to see, these should have removed them.

So, I'm sitting here staring at my shiny new iPhone 4S. It's unusable right now, thanks to AT&T's lack of preparedness. They've had several years to figure out how to handle the spike in the load on their servers that accompanies the launch of a new iPhone model. Yet they still manage to hack up a hairball when it comes time to process orders and activate phones.
Apparently, I'm not the only one, either. Several blogs are reporting AT&T customers are experiencing widespread problems with activations. When AT&T carried the iPhone exclusively, I could at least understand that they may have felt that they could get away with inconveniencing their customers. If <a

Maybe you think I'm out of my mind, but it's really easy to see the common trend happening with 3 of the 4 big carriers in the US. As mobile broadband and equipment evolve, our data plans seem to reverse direction and impose some serious and costly limitations. If I remember correctly in the past before smartphones were big, you could use all the data you wanted. But let's remember the hardware was not nearly as advanced and you really weren't streaming anything over a mobile <a

So yes, one month they both went over. I explained (again) how they had to be careful, not download games or whatever except <a

The problem? The Internet is running out of IP addresses. Since 1981 IPv4, internet protocol version 4, has been the foundation for most of our Internet communications. It has worked just fine for 30 years but the rapid growth of the Internet has resulted in a huge number of IP addresses being used up. The demand has finally reached the point that there is a greater need for IP addresses than IPv4 can provide. In other words, we've run out of IP addresses. That's where IPv6 comes in <a

I'm impressed with WebOS but I found the tablet a bit too laggy for my taste. Well the speed issue is about to be resolved with the new version of the HP TouchPad 4G that is coming to AT&T Mobile. The updated version will have a built-in 4G connectivity and a faster 1.5GHz processor (the current version has a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon).

It always pays to shop around, even when buying a carrier-branded phone.
Did you know that the same phones you can buy at the Verizon store are available on Amazon -- some at greatly reduced savings from the carrier sites? No kidding -- on the Verizon site, the <a

Especially since the full retail says $569.99.

For the kids and Sami, I got the lowest data plans, because they're all on the wifi all the time. But weirdly, every month, Maggie's phone was approaching and going over the limit.
At first, after talking with the AT&T support folks, it seemed that it was just because she was going outside the range of our WiFi modem--which is not that tough, honestly; it's only a little 2Wire job--and so the phone was flipping her requests to the 3G network. So I disabled 3G on her phone. But still, the charges kept piling up. So I disabled cellular data on <a

The initial data set was likely skewed by the 'new user effect' of folks over-using their data plan as they signed up for the new Verizon iPhone. A month later, however, it is clear that regardless of non-existent retail lines at launch, there have been HUGE Verizon iPhone sales, and folks are making great use of those phones. The latest data shows Verizon with a greater than 12% overall share of the iPhone market:
Since the launch of the
<a

There has been a long-standing debate and rather good argument over whether tethering your phone is legal, ethical, or financially worth it. Most platforms today have programs available that allow you to tether a wired or wireless device to you phone without buying another data plan. Most wireless carriers do offer tethering at an additional cost, but even then they limit you data speed and connection options. These days almost everyone that has a phone capable of tethering and has an additional device or two that could benefit from sharing their 3G/4G data cellular data.
So the big question is if you cheating your carrier by <a

In those prehistoric days, everything ran across copper, and 99% or more of the traffic was voice--ARPANET was just getting going, and all we primitive creatures did was make one-to-one phone calls. (The concept of a many-to-many phone call--a "party call"--was almost insanely exotic to me.) So worry about the "technological infrastructure" was, well, not on anyone's radar.
Which was good, because Android Central is reporting that the HTC Aria will be getting a bit of a lobotomy. You see, AT&T apparently hates the idea of sideloading apps. Sideloading means you can add apps that are not part of the regular Android marketplace through over the air download or via the USB cable on your computer. It's for installing beta software, or software that's only distributed through a developer's site, and many of these are not as obscure as you'd think...
Just to give you a few examples, I was away on a business trip last week. While I was there, I received an email that the new Swype beta was out. I was able to download and The 3G and WiFi iPads are very similar. When I received my 3G iPad last Friday I began exploring it to see if there were any differences from the WiFi version I'd been using since the iPad launch. The obvious difference in the 3G version is the addition of the Cellular data settings. It's there that you set up your account with AT&T, pick a plan and enter your payment information.

One thing that struck me, all right -- it shocked me, when browsing through this area was the amount of money AT&T is asking for to set up an international plan for their 3G service abroad.
<p

3G users were finding that when using their iPads over AT&T's 3G network videos in both YouTube and iTunes Preview were being scaled down in quality. We're guessing that is was being done to cut down on bandwidth usage on AT&T's fragile network One of the main themes of this year's CTIA Wireless conference was Mobile Broadband. People just can't get enough of it. Literally! Major wireless service providers in the U.S. have long been battling it out over whose network reigns supreme for speed and reliability. The race is heating up with the promise of 4G speed in our future. What was interesting at this year's CTIA Wireless conference was to hear vastly different approaches being taken by each carrier. Whether you're on AT&T, Verizon or Sprint, you can expect a different approach to 4G -- and time frame on actual the actual deployment to this technology. Let's take a closer look and see how this impacts your service and customer loyalty to a specific carrier.
<p

That is, assuming they already have a highspeed Internet connection. You see, the Microcell will allow you to connect to your high-speed Internet service and then have your iPhone or any other AT&T cell phone jump on the data connection from your cable company and route calls through it. This will, in turn, improve your cell reception because you won't be using AT&T's network. This will also be the case with data <a

Unfortunately, short of rooting it there's not much you can do about either of those, but AT&T did something far worse to the Backflip that you WILL want to change.
Every other Android phone offers an option to install apps from outside the marketplace. Sometimes it is a beta (like the Swype keyboard beta), other times it is things like PDANet, a tethering utility, that isn't sold through the marketplace. If you own a Backflip, AT&T completely removed this option. Many sites have belabored the "Android is supposed to be OPEN" sentiment, and I won't continue it here. But I will share this tip, care of <a

When it was announced that the <a

It certainly would catch people's eyes with it's funky keyboard placement; no one is mistaking it for an iPhone wannabe! But there's something different about the Backflip beyond the keyboard...it won't be using Google for search.
Nope. AT&T took a long, hard look at Android, at the obvious Google connections, and opted to use the logical choice in search providers: <a
