style="text-align: center;">Image courtesy of Synology
You can't be too cautious these days about backing up your data. Time and time again friends, family and co-workers come to me about trying to recover pictures, music and documents on a failed or virus ridden drive. Some even have their small business data lost when the main computer goes down.
My first advice to anyone is that they should get themselves some sort of backup device, whether it be Desktop Attached Storage or Network Attached Storage and some good software to automate the backups. I have wanted to upgrade my 2TB external drive to a Network Attached Storage Device, but had a really hard time deciding which one to <a

The free storage level tends to work fine for me, but I know many folks who take advantage of the reasonably priced upgrades in storage.
Now AVG, a company best known for making great malware and anti-virus products, has launched a new competitor: LiveKive. The service is similar to those offered by competitors, including backup, sync and more.
Here are the basics: Free 5GB storage account, with 25GB costing $49.99 per year, 50GB for $59.99 or 'unlimited' for $79.99 per year as shown below. (I put unlimited in <a

Eventually I settled on simply using "Adventures in Customer Service- Apple and Spilled Crystal Light Edition".
Here's my story.
I did not have a good morning. I woke up not feeling particularly great and immediately had a number of phone calls with people who are in the midst of challenging times. I finished my morning coffee and went to get the package that the <a

And for all of those categories, you're probably thinking to yourself, "Yo, self: what if my iPad is caught in a fire, or a car crash, or some durn thing, and experiences catastrophic data loss? What are you going to do then, huh smart guy?" Well, SpiderOak cloud backup has a lot of features that I have been looking for in an online backup solution.
First, to get started with SpiderOak, you need to download the software for Windows, Mac or Linux and install it. The version delivered for Ubuntu works on pretty much any version of Ubuntu. You can install it with standard dpkg commands or double-click on it and us the graphical package manager, <a

Historical records especially benefit, since they become portable, universal, and searchable. Teleread today reported on one of the most important reasons for this; the International Tracing Service in Germany has completed a large portion of an extensive project to list every person who was documented to have entered a displaced persons camp post-World War II.
The full list is being forwarded all over the world, from the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC to Warsaw, Poland, to Jerusalem, Israel. This is an incredible trove of information on what happened to many people post-war, and I hope that it can be used to help trace family histories, as well as a larger history of immigration around the world.
My grandparents met in a displaced persons camp after the war, and while I am lucky enough to have heard their stories firsthand, there are many people who did not know their family members or hear their stories. When I hear about projects like this, and the incredible amount of history that is being saved, it leaves me grateful and in awe of the power of technology. <a

I'm quite sure a very expletive laden version of this concept was bandied around Microsoft after the Sidekick backup debacle. So I posed the question to the Gear Diary Team: How do you back up your smartphone data? <a

Many of them have lost their messages forever if their phone is damaged/replaced/upgraded, or they run out of room and are forced to delete them. There is a very useful application for Android called SMS Backup that helps you save your SMS messages to Gmail so you can keep them forever. <a

If you're willing to give the cloud a chance, then Best Buy's new venture may be of interest. In conjunction with Dashwire, Best Buy is introducing its own cloud backup service, called mIQ. mIQ works with Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, and Symbian S60 operating systems. The service goes active today (October 12), and you can sign up for a free <a

It's gotten a bit more contentious lately, due to various and mysterious software issues. Calendar entries that refuse to accept date changes, programs that freeze repeatedly, games that malfunction...it has been frustrating to say the least.
Cue Nokia PC Suite and their backup suite. My first thought was that perhaps a backup and then full restore might smooth out the quirks, plus it would provide an excellent test of the backup system. If that did not fix my issues, I could reset the phone, rebuild it, and then back up my "clean" setup. I've done this before on Windows Mobile phones, iPhones and Palm Dan mentioned that the other day with his look at an old 32 MB card vs his 32 GB iPhone. This change is most apparent in how we keep finding new and improved solutions for old problems. And the oldest, biggest problem for me is losing data. Almost as long as I have had a computer, I have managed to find new and creative ways to lose my data. As a result, I have grown extremely interested in the available tools for restoring that lost data. While online backups are nice, it is still online, and as Toodledo's recent problems showed, that has its downfalls as well. What I needed was a fast and easy way to backup my data and physically store it in my house. What I needed all along was the SeaGate Replica. Like I said, where was this when I was in high school. Hit the jump for a closer look.
<p

Time Machine, Apple's default back up program, is one of those not so perfect things.
My biggest problem with Time Machine is the inability to customize just when Time Machine backs up. The only time management setting offered by Time Machine is on or off. When it's on it backs up everything on your Mac, every hour. I find this to be a major nuisance as it seems my iMac is always backing itself up and it's usually suffering some performance when doing so. This becomes even more of an issue when I've been busy on my <a

Cue panic attack as the MacBook Pro sizzled. I had a backup of that document on my Fujitsu tablet, but it was several days old, and so was the previous SuperDuper backup of the MacBook. Fortunately, the MacBook was fine after several hours by a heater (with the battery out, of course). I got round to looking at online backup services after that. I evaluated SugarSync (pricey), Diino (no Mac client) and settled on Mozy.
After the initial beta hiccups, Mozy's been working fine on the MacBook, but for my new Mac Pro, I've decided to look at other, more fully featured services. I've been using Diino, Memopal and SpiderOak concurrently, and I'll be reviewing them in alphabetical order - first up, Diino. <a

Sometimes, you need a bit more.

OWC recently announced a desktop RAID solution that holds anywhere from 2.0 to 8.0TB (yes, that's EIGHT terabytes) of data in either RAID 0,1,5 or 10 arrays. The nice thing about this particular solution is that it appears to be pretty much plug and play, allowing you to connect your PC to it with either FireWire 400/800, USB 2.0 or eSATA cables.

I'm in the process of arranging for a review unit to be sent, and we'll be taking a closer look at this device to see if its something that anyone and everyone can use to help make their data more secure. The complete press release can be found after the break.

<a

Soon enough, though, you've fallen off the cart. You're going to softball games, soccer games, working on...One. Last. Deadline. Then two, maybe three months go by since your last backup. We are all guilty of neglecting our poor data. Usually around that time is when -- gasp! -- everything is lost. We become victims a file corruption. A dead hard drive spun into oblivion. Maybe we just deleted that folder we just knew we would not need. Our photos. Our music. That powerpoint you did back in June for the boss. Gone. Sadly, our good intention won't do much to save that data now.
This is where <a

Typically this data could be MP3 music files, pictures, movies, etc. These types of sync programs are not new. Microsoft offes a free program called Foldershare which operates on both PC and Mac platforms and does a lot of what Sugarsync does but keeps all synchronization on local computers - requiring that they remain to serve data to the other computers looking to synchronize. The interesting feature that Sugarsync offers is to store sync'ed files offline on its own servers. This may raise privacy issues but means that mobile devices have access to the information even when a desktop computer is turned off http://www.geardiary.com/?p=8415

Do any of us need any more signs to be written on any more walls that redundant backing up of our data is the single most important thing we can possibly do? I hope not, because it seems that hardly a day goes by without another harsh reminder being driven home that it is imperative. Just this weekend many of us read with horror about the colossal explosion at The Planet, which affected over 9000 servers. Did you catch that? Servers, not sites.
Although most of the servers suffered no data loss, that was not true in all cases. My friend Ewdi wrote in his personal blog about another site owner who had "a secondary server (in the same datacenter – The Planet H1) with RAID 10 as a backup server where he rsync his primary server, however due to the incident, his backup server RAID array was corrupted and he was unable to recover it. Lucky him his primary server was intact, however this experience makes him rethink his backup strategy." Indeed.
As you all will recall, Ewdi was my knight in shining armor when Gear Diary suffered its own massive server crash on March 1, and the lessons learned that day were very hard, but they were learned well. For Gear Diary's data I now use a combination of FTP download to two separate laptops, I back one of those up to a portable 250GB hard drive, I burn DVD copies to store away from my home office, I am currently trying Sugar Sync, I back up the entire Gear Diary site nightly via rsync to an off-site server...and yet I still don't feel entirely safe. You think I am paranoid? I think that after what happened I couldn't possibly be paranoid enough.
I rely on Mac's OSX Time Machine - the free backup solution that comes bundled with Leopard for my personal data, and I have found it to work very well. How well was proven when my less than three month old MacBook Pro suffered a freakish hard drive crash in the middle of the Microsoft Mobius event I attended in May. Irony much? Bad luck much? Well guess what? No one is immune and no one ever expects it when it happens. Every cliché you have ever heard about being safe versus sorry...there is so much truth in it.
That's why when I was offered the chance to try the Newer Tech Guardian MAXimus RAID Mirrored Data Redundant Solution, my answer was a very quick yes. Described as a provider of ""live activity" backup/data redundancy of your critical data with Plug and Play simplicity on any Mac or PC," the Guardian MAXimus has "pre-configured hardware RAID solutions" featuring "two paired lightning fast SATA (Type I/II) drives with up to 1.0TB each of storage capacity and a high speed Oxford 924 FireWire 800/400 & USB 2.0 chipset."
<a
