I swear that every time I heard that last night during the Grammy Awards, I was certain of one thing - mediocrity was the best thing to hope for. If 'everyone would be talking', it would be like Nicki Minaj's terrible performance that might signal her 15 minutes has played out with her singular stylistic droppings getting tiresome. <a

She was extremely popular from the mid-80's through the 90's, but more than that she brought to the stage a voice that ranks her among the great all-time vocalists in popular music.
Here is a bit from the <a
href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/02/whitney-houston-dead-beverly-hills.html">news item</a>:<blockquote>Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.
Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown.
At her peak, Houston the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world's best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.
Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale."
She had the he perfect voice, and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.
She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.
But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.</blockquote> She was criticized for as she said 'not being black enough', 'too pop', and so on. Her marriage to rapper Bobby Brown seemed to send her into a spiral that she never escaped. Her voice degraded, her appearance showed years of 'hard living', and she became erratic. Her recent attempts at a comeback were more sad to watch than anything else, as it was more of a reminder of how she had squandered a truly great talent through years of drug abuse. And I always felt bad for her daughter through the years.
But as we mourn her passing, I would rather focus on all of the great happiness and joy she brought to the world through the years. So let's go! <a

href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/journey-greatest-hits-2/id470301613"> Journey - Greatest Hits, Volume 2 </a></p> When you look at some of the best 'greatest hits' collections, it is hard to think about augmenting them by going back to the same well a second time. The Beatles 62-66 and 67-70 are complete enough that a second set would feel superfluous, the same is true with the Rolling Stones Hot Rocks, The Eagle's Greatest Hits and so on.
Journey's Greatest Hits is one of the top-selling collections of all time, posting more than 25 million albums sold through the years. Now we get Volume 2 of the greatest hits, encompassing basically the same years - which raises the basic question of whether there is enough material to make a whole new collection. Let's take a look. <a

That is right - that music nominated for Grammy Awards is featured! So you should be able to look at the 'best song' or 'best solo' category and then find that song in the 'On Sale' list at Google Music ... right?
Well, that is KIND OF how things work at the Google Music Grammy sale - and before I nitpick, let me just say that there is a load of Grammy-nominated music available at great prices. For example, I grabbed 'The Good Feeling' big band recording by Christian McBride. I have it on my MoG collection, but at $3.99 it was an instant buy! <a

href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/reese-and-the-smooth-ones/id355387877"> Art Ensemble Of Chicago - Reese And The Smooth Ones </a></p> When I first thought about doing a 'Vinyl Revisions' series, there were three records that came to mind: <a
href="http://www.geardiary.com/2011/11/08/vinyl-re-visions-anthony-braxton-five-pieces-1975-jazz-1975/">Anthony Braxton's Five Pieces 1975</a>, <a
href="http://www.geardiary.com/2012/01/09/vinyl-re-visions-steve-lacy-the-wire-jazz-1977/">Steve Lacy's The Wire</a>, and this record.
As mentioned in a comment on my Braxton review, that music was compiled in 2008 on the Complete Arista Recordings as a digital release. This record was briefly available in 2002 on Get Back Records as a CD release but has otherwise been out of print - even though Amazon claims a 2009 re-release on vinyl, it has been 'out of stock' every time I have checked. I missed out on grabbing the CD - I saw it, waited a bit and then ... it was gone. So the versions in my collection are digitized from vinyl ... but as I started writing this I discovered something ... <a
href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/reese-and-the-smooth-ones/id355387877">the album is available on iTunes for $9.99</a>! Let's take a look: <a

Here's one of the points that I think is really important that also really makes me smile: <em>I am enjoying watching the industry rush to get behind Adele (or more to the point, jump on her bandwagon), while in reality they were never rooting for her. Her album didn't have huge marketing, and took off thanks to a curious method you might have heard about: airplay and listener feedback. People liked her song and voice and bought and requested the song, which got it played more and more and more. Completely organic - labels love the money but hate the lack of control.</em> <a

The Grammy Awards are now all about corporate self-congratulation, highlighting the few artists who sell all the records and those who get rich on their backs.
Last year there was outrage when Justin Beiber had "his" best new artist award 'stolen' by the amazingly talented Esperanza Spalding (of course, ANYONE in the category was/is more talented than Beiber, but that is beside the point) and an industry vet railed about how <a
href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OO2_49TycdE">people like Eminem and Beiber paid for those awards</a>. He went on to say that it was the duty of the Grammy awards to just shut up and hand out awards to top-selling artists. Huh??
Apparently he never heard of The Beach Boys, The Who or Led Zepplin.

Aside from those acts, Buddy Holly, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Queen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Marley, Diana Ross, Chuck Berry, or The Kinks. Most of those acts had many chances for recognition but were never honored. <a

I can do more on my iPad than my entire multi-thousand dollar mini-studio from the 90's could ever hope to accomplish! It has gotten to the point where a solid app that lacks a few features - MIDI in, AudioCopy, etc - will get passed over by musicians. Such is the case of DM1, and excellently designed and implemented drum machine and sequencer. It has loads of great programming flexibility and features - but lacking the aforementioned features kept it off of many folks iPads. Now with the 2.0 update FingerLab seeks to remedy that - and based on a few minutes playing around this morning I would say they have succeeded!
Here is their description of the update: <a

So finding this gem - a video showing the development and shaping of the classic 'Sympathy for the Devil'.
You see the basic track grow, the rhythm change, you hear Keith Richards (and not bassist Bill Wyman) develop the classic bass part, and we see one of the last contributions by founding member Brian Jones. It is also interesting that in the early vocals you hear 'who killed Kennedy' but in the final track it is 'who killed the Kennedys' - the initial recording session took place the day before Bobby was shot. <a

George Martin and his son Giles were visting Abbey Road studios with George Harrison's son Dhani, and walking through the master tapes to 'Here Comes The Sun'. Martin shows Dhani how the track was constructed by isolating various sections, with Giles commenting on hwo little orchestration had been done on Harrison's tracks in general, but bringing up the low-end strings that added a nice emphasis on the bass harmony without impinging on the rest of the track.
Then at ~1:01, Dhani punches in a track that contains George playing a lead guitar that totally changes the character of the song. It has <a

That was 9 months ago when it was in Beta. Then it got out of beta and ... it was still the worst music service available, just slightly less crappy than before.
Now Google has made a major update to the service ... they added a button.
This button allows you to <a

But now we learn that MOTU is also introducing a new version of the well-received MicroBook audio interface. MicroBook was released in 2010 and was straightforward in design - 1/4" inputs and outputs giving you a 4-in/2-out audio interface for your computer that delivered excellent sound quality and performance.
So hwo did MOTU up their game for the new version? It is now a 4-in/6-out, giving you mich more recording flexibility. It also has an enhanced USB 2 connection, and rather <a

So naturally there was a line forming to This year at NAMM we had not one, not two but THREE eerily similar new iPad-based guitar instruments. None have strings, all stick the iPad in the string area, and are functionally fairly similar. Here we go! <strong>ION Audio Announces the iPad-Based Guitar Apprentice</strong> <a

Mackie Designs is one of those companies. For a long time they were a mixer-only company, and about 20 years ago when I was transitioning from trying to use my Tascam Portastudio as a pseudo-mixer into having a real home studio, the Mackie 1202 provided everything I need in a well made, high quality package at a budget price - and it is still going strong today for myself and my son!
At Winter NAMM they introduced a great looking new mixer based around <a

This weekend I gave my younger son my 4th gen iPod Touch to use as his own, as he was constantly pushing beyond the limits of his 8GB iPod Touch that was the pseudo 3rd gen that was really a 2nd gen model holdover. Since I almost never use it, I had no qualms since I'd rather it actually get used than sit idle.
But while going through things with him I realized just how much has changed with iOS 5, iTunes in the <a

But rather than just a guitar synth, it introduced the concept of a 'virtual guitar'. The thought was that rather than just playing Pat Metheny-esque lead lines, guitarists would be better served if they had a system that provided maximum flexibility of sound.
COSM allows string-by-string tuning, processing, and pitch shifting. This allows for on-the-fly tuning changes, virtual capos, and the ability to emulate nearly any other guitar sound from a single instrument ... although the results now sound more quaint than realistic. Now more <a

The following year I took my first class in 'computer music'. The studio setup was a massive mess of wires and re-tooled Prophet V's and so on ... and one little Macintosh computer. The program? Performer by Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU).
Through the years Performer has been a constant companion - it was the one thing that kept me on the Mac in the mid-90's until CakeWalk matured enough to be a workable PC solution ... and one of the <a

Given that I grew up with analog synthesis and all of the good (the sound) and bad (everything else) that went along with it, I have always been amused by the fascination younger folks have with analog synthesizers. I still have a 90's sound module that used a combination of digital sampling and waveform manipulation to provide analog-like sounds, but recently we have seen and heard much greater use of the massive bass waveforms by artists in electronica and dance music.
This week at NAMM we have seen two awesome analog syths for under $750 that take different approaches <a
