I've tried just about every GPS application for the iPhone. I have to say that there hasn't been a single one that I would consider a "fail". That doesn't, however, mean, that some don't stand out over the others. The one that currently stands out for me -- and one that I actually use on a day-to-day basis -- is AT&T Navigator. My first experience with it was poor but since then it has worked flawlessly for me. It is fast, it is accurate and it has received numerous updates (most recently last night) that continue to add useful features like music integration, night view and the ability to set a new destination handsfree. For the sake of disclosure I should note that I am on a one-year review subscription of the service. But the fact is, I have access to four different GPS programs on my iPhone and AT&T Navigator is the one that I use day-to-day. The service does have its downsides. Unlike standalone GPS applications that are one time purchases, AT&T Navigator requires a monthly subscription. At the same time, however, that also means the maps on it are always up to date. In addition, it means that it has a much smaller footprint. It comes in at under 5MB while two of the other major GPS programs are close to 1.5 and 2GB. (That's gigabytes with a G.) That is a huge difference in the amount of space it consumes on your iPhone AND it means that AT&T Navigator tends to load more rapidly. Of course, that also means AT&T Navigator relies on data from cell towers to get the maps and, as a result, you need to have connectivity, but except for the very first time I used the program that has never been a problem. It's for that reason that I was excited when telenav, the company behind AT&T Navigator, invited me to join them in San Francisco for their media and blogger program officially known as "Waypoint". I've been to one convention, but it wasn't my thing.  I used to try to decide if I wanted to be Spock (I was fine with being able to raise a single eyebrow, and loved quick quips, but not so much with the lack of emotion thing), or Scotty (making magic happen with technology!).  Trekkie, but maybe not hard core.

What is a "winning application?"  Is it how cool it looks on your smartphone?  Is it how productive it makes you on the go?  Mobile application developers are constantly coming up with new and innovative solutions that bring more function to our smartphones.  So, how can a developer get their application in front of companies and users to be a winning application? I spoke with Kevin Talbot, Managing Director of RBC Venture Partners & Co-Managing Partner of the BlackBerry Partners Fund to get his take on a "winning" mobile application.

I found out that there is not an arms-length checklist, but merely three things that he -- and the other members of the Partners Fund -- look for in an application.  So, what three things can make an application go from relative obscurity to receiving prizes valued at $100,000, tons of press, being featured on an application storefront and even a possible venture capital investment?

One of the cool things about being at the BlackBerry Developer Conference is the chance to try out pre-release apps from actual developers.  Couple that opportunity with developers and conference participants all exchanging "tweets" about their applications, and you may be fortunate enough to get a look at some awesome apps for 'Berry devices.

Last night I got the chance to try out an advance look at the Craigslist app for BlackBerry from Movela.  As the screenshot above shows, I immediately configured it for my home preferences and location.   Anyone looking for a better method than the mobile Craigslist site, will definitely be happy with this app which makes quick-and-easy work to not

BlackBerry users have been wanting a LinkedIn App for quite some time.  Now, the team behind the business social networking site have developed an application that integrates unique features to BlackBerry versus their iPhone app, including:

  • Messaging from within the App.
  • LinkedIn Profile viewing.

No, this is not a joke.  During the BlackBerry Developer Conference in San Francisco, the Loopt app for BlackBerry was demoed and brings some features to the table that -- gasp! -- best the iPhone's version of Loopt! Stop laughing.  We are serious!  OK, so what features?  The location based friend-tracking service will enable location updates running in the background (so you don't have to have the app open to keep track of where your friends and contacts may be) .

Put down the BrickBreaker.  RIM and EA Games showed off the future of gaming for BlackBerry devices.  I know, I know...gaming & BlackBerry haven't really gone together like peanut butter & jelly.  But, guess what, that is about to change.   Take a look at the video above.  The team at CrackBerry was kind (and quick!) enough to post this gem.  This was one of the things that had developers really excited.  Forget BrickBreaker.  Forget Texas Hold 'Em.  The announcement that BlackBerry will begin supporting OpenGL ES may not sound like a hot bowl of awesome at first glance, but what it means sure does!   OpenGL ES will soon enable 3D gaming and graphics on your BlackBerry.  Let me emphasize that again...On.  Your.  BlackBerry!

A little bit later this morning I'll be on a plane, headed north for a whirlwind round of Windows 7 launch activities in NYC and Washington DC as Microsoft's and HP's guest. Wayne and Dan will be on their way into NYC as well, to attend Engadget Live, as the show engages in a "frank and unscripted one-on-one conversation" with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. I'm at the annual Blogger's Day at gaming publisher Electronic Arts (MySims, Madden NFL 10, Need for Speed, The Beatles RockBand) in Redwoood City California where I'll join another dozen writers in touring the EA campus, playing games, sitting on our asses, playing games and finally buying a bunch of games at the EA store. I have attended a fair share of these events over the years, and one thing that they all have in common is that they are always packed; even though the people attending are a mere fraction of those on the floor at the LVCC or Sands, it is still completely crowded and hectic. Trying to get any quality time with a company rep that you've established a past relationship with, much less meeting one that you are trying to establish a new relationship with, is at best - hit or miss. The alternative and something most of us do, is schedule multiple days of one-on-one meetings. These are usually held in hotel suites, on the convention center floor, or in other leased locales. Relying on CES bus transportation, cabs, and the monorail to get to these meetings on time can be tricky and expensive, especially since we are competing with hundreds of others also trying to get to their own destinations. On the flip side, these meetings are held by company representatives who are repeating the same spiel multiple times a day to single attendees at a time, and as a result, they are most likely repeatedly answering the same questions. In other words, for every benefit associated with meeting one-on-one, there are just as many negatives for both sides. This year I attended CNTRSTG, an event that was founded by Mike Temporale, Steven Hughes, Erik Hicks, and Johan van Mierlo. The guys running the show all have blogging backgrounds, and they understand very well the downsides to such a huge event as CES...
