First, a bit of background. My best friend is getting married next week, and so I have been wracking my brain putting together a toast for her and her fiancée. I had some fun anecdotes about her, as well as stories from when the two of them started dating, but I was looking for something more to add. Thinking maybe old emails would help, I typed her name into GMail, and discovered (or, really, <em>re-discovered</em>) that GMail helpfully saves <strong>all</strong> chat conversations along with email. It is an interesting service that scans your email for personal contact information and then updates it on a daily basis -- so long as you have turned on the auto-update feature. If not, then it will offer you the updated information and you can choose to accept <a

One good example of what is possible is SnapCal. It is a neat idea and Has already been downloaded by over 100,000 users. style="text-align: center;"><em>Image courtesy of Google</em></p> Does Google's free app goodness ever end? Whether you're a fan of Google or not, you must admit that the free services they offer are among some of the best. Google is constantly adding new apps and upgrading existing ones to their huge lineup. Google chat expanded a few months ago with the addition of letting you communicate via video and voice (<a

Google announced this morning that now you don't even need to pickup your phone anymore to make free calls to the US and Canada directly from your Gmail. Since your contacts are fully integrated into Gmail, you can just call <a

I'm hoping you can give me a little advice. I am a disorganized e-mail user and... I... need... HELP!</p><p
style="clear: both;">Let me explain.</p><p
style="clear: both;">The other day I look at my inbox and was horrified to discover that I had over 2400 e-mails sitting there. You read that right -- 2400 e-mails were there in my Inbox. Larry asked me a reasonable question -- "How did things get this far."</p><p
style="clear: both;">It's a good question and I actually have an answer. I need help. For the longest time I would receive e-mails, read them and then leave them in my inbox because I figured I needed to respond to them or get a piece of information from them at a later date. I did this once, twice, and before I knew it I had built up a tremendous number of e-mails in my inbox. In addition when junky e-mails would come in I would look at them, decide to ignore them, but not remove them. Between the two approaches it wasn't long before yes, 2400 e-mails in my inbox.</p><p
style="clear: both;">The other day I decided to change all that.</p> <a

And because e-mail is an important part of what I do on my iPhone, the iPhone application reMail has become key for me. The concept behind the application is quite simple. It downloads your entire Gmail account to your handheld device, compresses it so that it doesn't take up an overwhelming amount of space, and then lets that e-mail reside on the device itself so that you can search it whenever and where ever you need. If you've ever tried to search for an e-mail from more than a few weeks ago on your iPhone you'll understand how convenient the speed and off-line access to e-mail is.<p
style="clear: both;">And how well does it work? Well, thanks to reMail I have 81,066 different emails on my iPhone and they only take 304 MG of space. That's impressive and makes it a must have app for serious iPhone users. Sadly, unless you have already purchased the application you're out of luck.</p><p

And it's a perfectly fine email program, if you want your mail stored locally. I set mine up when I bought my iBook (the last of the G3 models...what a great little computer!), using my comcast email address.
Then GMail came along and changed everything. I had always hated web based email, preferring to use Outlook on my PCs and Mail on my Mac. But the GMail interface was so much better than what the desktop options offered, I immediately jumped ship to the web based site and never looked back. Except, of <a

The precipitator for this decision appears to be cyber-attacks on Google, including GMail accounts, mostly related to the emails of human rights advocates focused on conditions in China. But what does this all really mean? Is Google living up to "Don't Be Evil", or are they just making a pragmatic business decision in an environment that was hostile long before any attacks took place?

The transition has take some getting used to.  Reading and writing via the G-Mail site is a different experience than doing so via a regular mail application.  Simply put, it takes a heck of a lot more mouse movements and clicks when using the web based G-Mail method.
When I first spotted the <a
href="http://www.gboard.com" target="_blank">Gboard</a> I immediately knew it was a tool worth investigating.  The small keyboard contains 19 color coated short cuts keys for the most common G-Mail tasks.  Gboard was kind enough to send me a keyboard to review and I've been using it for a while now.  My wrist is thanking me for doing so.  It's compact design and color coordinated layout makes the G-Mail browsing experience quick and painless. <a

I was seriously excited when I laid eyes on the <a

The keyboard, which sells for $19.99, contains shortcuts to all the important G-Mail tasks and plugs in to any available USB port on your computer. <a

When I woke up, I noticed that all of my new e-mails were indicating that they'd already been read when I checked from my iPhone. The problem was, I haven't read any of them yet. I e-mailed Larry to ask if Gmail was down for him too, and he told me that he'd seen on twitter that exchange was having problems. Since I use exchange with Gmail currently, that clearly was the issue. Looking at my iMac, everything seemed to be fine. A few hours later and it still isn't working properly. I checked in with Larry, and he indicated that his most recent e-mail on the <a

Many of them have lost their messages forever if their phone is damaged/replaced/upgraded, or they run out of room and are forced to delete them. There is a very useful application for Android called SMS Backup that helps you save your SMS messages to Gmail so you can keep them forever. <a

This plugin enables some of the most used Gmail-specific features that the <a
href="http://www.google.com/mobile/gmail/">native Mobile Gmail</a> client has, including: Archiving messages, starring and labeling messages, reporting spam, local and remote Gmail searches, and conversation view. The advantage of the new Enhanced Google Mail Plugin is that it enables these features in the native messaging interface, which allows for standard push BlackBerry messaging without having to go into a dedicated application. <a

I write "worked" in the past tense because their servers were apparently not ready for the demand placed on them. After a few hours emails stopped pushing and hasn't been operable since. Now PushMail is bringing the same functionality... with one major difference... it works! <a

Yet here we are in August 2009 and I'm getting excited that finally there's an application that provides real time notification when I receive an email in my Gmail account. Never mind that it only works for one Gmail account or that you STILL have to click on your regular mail client to open and view the mail. Maybe by 2010 there will be some fully integrated Gmail push love for the iPhone. Until then grab GPush for .99 and bring half a Gmail push solution to your iPhone. <a

In the <a
href="http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/send-mail-from-another-address-without.html" target="_blank">Gmail blog</a> last week, Google announced a new option that eliminates the need to show your Gmail address and the "on behalf of" text.
The option is available if your other email provider supports POP or IMAP access.  To take advantage of this new option, go to the <a
href="http://mail.google.com/mail/#settings/accounts" target="_blank">Accounts page under Settings</a>, and click "<em>edit info</em>" from the "<em>Send mail as</em>" section.  <a

href="http://www.geardiary.com/2009/06/14/htc-magic-first-impressions/" target="_blank">first impressions</a>, and it’s time to fess up my thoughts on the HTC Magic. Truth be told, it has truly surprised me! <img
class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-38375" title="htcmagic-14" src="http://www.geardiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/htcmagic-14-500x375.jpg" alt="htcmagic-14" width="500" height="375" /> <strong>User Interface</strong> The Android user interface is simple yet elegant, and was definitely designed with finger actions in mind. Unlike Windows Mobile, Android never makes you wish for a stylus. Icons are nicely sized, menus are large and the flicking motions to advance lists, web pages and menus become second nature as soon as you start using the phone.
For some reason Android feels a lot nicer on the Magic that it did on the Dream, perhaps due to the way the Magic fits perfectly in hand and can be used (for the most part) with either one or two hands.
The one thing that could do with a bit of work out of the box is the icon set, some of them feel a bit childish. The preinstalled theme is up to the carrier though, and replacement themes can be installed easily through the Market to address this. <a

href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/google-apps-is-out-of-beta-yes-really.html" target="_blank">Official Google Blog</a> announced that Google Apps have finally been relieved of the Beta tag!
I love Gmail. For me, Gmail hasn't needed the beta moniker for quite some time. It's my only mail client for all my personal accounts and makes managing the flood of mail I get on a daily basis so much easier.   I applaud Google for making this milestone even if it took them a while.  Thank you Google!<p
